Graphene is usually deemed as the “miracle material” because of its unique structure and wonderful properties. Since its successful isolation in 2004, graphene has triggered research interest globally because of the possibilities of developing groundbreaking applications based on this miracle material. Introduction
Graphene is a relatively new material to us. Although graphene has always existed in the world as a thin layer that forms graphite, it was not successfully isolated until the year 2004 [1] [10]. One of graphene’s most important properties is its thickness. Graphene is remarkably thin, it is only one atom thick. As a comparison, graphene is about one million times thinner than a human hair [3]. The thickness of graphene leads to some other great properties. The incredible flexibility is a result of graphene’s one atom thickness. Like a rubber band, if we stretch graphene, it can extend to 20 per cent of its original length. This property could be exceptionally useful for flexible and wearable technologies. We can imagine having a smart phone that can be wrapped around our wrist or a computer that can be rolled like a newspaper in the future …show more content…
Currently, many parts of the world are suffering from the problem of water shortage, and water desalination is the process of converting seawater into fresh water that can be used by human beings. Today, the main type of water desalination process is reverse osmosis. In the reverse osmosis process, seawater is forced through a semi-permeable membrane by external hydrostatic pressure [8]. The most important part in the reverse osmosis process is a semi-permeable membrane that can separate fresh water from seawater. To achieve optimum performance during the reverse osmosis process, a membrane should be as thin as possible to increase permeability and as selective as possible to filter out larger particles. A more permeable membrane can also reduce energy consumption and related costs. Since water flux across a membrane is inversely proportional to its thickness, graphene is deemed as an ultimate reverse osmosis membrane mainly because of its one atom thickness [8]. Graphene membranes can be made from layered graphene oxide sheets. The graphene oxide sheets are stacked together to form a laminate. The only space in the laminate is the inter-layer space and this space is extremely small. Therefore, graphene membranes are capable of blocking gas molecules including helium, which is the smallest gas molecule and allow water to pass through at the mean time

...One of the most amazing discoveries of the twenty-first century was the isolation of graphene. Graphene is a thin layer of pure carbon; it is a single, tightly packed layer of carbon atoms that are bonded together in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice.1 If we stack these thin layers upon each other it forms graphite, which is found in every pencil lead. When isolated, graphene exhibits remarkable properties that can be used to help improve the performance and efficiency of current materials and substances. Graphene was first studied theoretically in the 1940s. During this time, scientists felt that it was physically impossible for a 2D material to exist, so they did not pursue any form of mechanical exfoliation. Decades later, interested sparked and researchers began trying to peel apart the layers of graphite to isolate graphene. Scientists tried various techniques, but they never got to a single layer. Eventually, they were able to isolate graphene on top of another material, but not on its own. In 2003 a physics professor and his PhD student achieved the impossible; they were the first to isolate a single layer of graphene. Andre Geim, who won the 2000 Noble Prize for levitating a live frog over a magnetic field,2 asked a new PhD student to see how thin he could make a piece of graphite.
