In 1877, the Eastern railroads announced a 10% pay reduction. In response, the workers went on strike, which caused the railroads from Baltimore to St. Louis to be disrupted. The strikers also rioted and destroyed equipment. State militias and federal troops were sent to stop the strike. The forces opened fire on the strikers. This strike is very significant. Politically, it is the first major labor strike in the United States. Socially, it shows that workers weren’t happy with their working conditions.
