Group Work Assignment

Group work can be a very fun and enjoyable experience however, if you choose the wrong group members to work with, it can be a terrible experience. As a business student at SAIT, a lot of our projects are group based. I’ve experienced both success and failure working in groups. Choosing the right group members is key to doing well. When I first attended SAIT I would choose people who were my friends regardless of their work ethic. This ended up coming back to bite me as our group did poorly as a result of my group members lack of work ethic. It can be hard choosing the “right” group members, as you typically do not know how people work until you start working on the project. Through trial and error I have found a method to ensure success within the group. The first and most important step is to communicate effectively with group members. Gather every one’s e-mail and phone number so that every will be on the same page. The second step is to create a team charter. The charter will entail expectations and rules that the group will create and agree on. The third is to have weekly meetings with group members. This will allow everyone to stay accountable for their part because their will be weekly check-ins. The fourth and final step is to proof read each other’s work. When you put everyone’s work together and do not bother to take the time to look at what others have written, you run the risk of having multiple errors within the project. Provided you follow these steps, you will experience success in any group you are either put in or that you choose.

Autonomous Work Groups

...Autonomous Work Groups The dynamics of a workforce is ever changing with management, diversity, and the collaboration between management and employees. With all the changes it is important that employees and management, as well, remain motivated. Therefore there must be a workflow design that works well for both management and employees. It must create an alliance, collaboration, a line of trust, decision making, and create a sense of empowerment. Autonomous work groups offer this and so much more. There are pros and cons about autonomous work groups and why they work and do not work, but it is a work design that many companies are beginning to consider based upon research. The Effectiveness of Autonomous Work Groups Autonomous work groups, also known as self-managing work teams, are a team of employees granted autonomy or independence over the work they do within an organization (Kokemuller, 2014). This autonomy includes independent decision-making related to a specific work function, project or job and independent freedom to assign individual members specific tasks within the group (Kokemuller, 2014). An autonomous work group (AWG) can hire, fire, and make the necessary decisions for their department. An AWG replaces the role of having a boss and usually someone is elected to stand as leader to help facilitate within the group. What makes AWG effective groups are that they are able to work together toward a common task or project goal. They typically come up with broader...

...pros and cons of group work assignment? What does group work means? Based on my search on the internet, Wikipedia.org it shows me that group work brings the meaning a group of people working together temporarily until some goal is achieved. In supporting the effectiveness of a group approach to learning, Gatfield (1999) cites an empirical study conducted by Sorbral (1997) in one higher education setting which demonstrated that the students working in groups achieved a higher grade point average than those working in a control situation involving individual students If this point is viewed from students the temporary goal could be finishing assignments properly in a given time. Based on my view, group work assignment brings more benefits than disadvantages for university students. But despite its benefits, group work can be one of the most stressful, and emotionally exhausting part of a student’s life. According to Burns and Sinfield. “Many students see only problems associated with working in a group. Perhaps because they never get heard in the group, perhaps because they usually do all the work-whatever the problem, group work makes them unhappy.” One of the advantages of doing a group work assignment is that knowledge can be shared among students. By sharing knowledge, one student can generate or gain more ideas compared to students who works alone to complete certain assignments. To obtain knowledge by sharing, a proper group discussion must be...

Group Predictors

...had a group assignment on group predictors. The purpose of the assignment was to give the group experience applying what we learned about the benefits and drawbacks of various predictors presented in the lesson. This was our first group assignment for the class. Most classes I have participated in have had group assignments, which usually begin with members emailing each other. The initial point of contact serves as the first step in Tuckman’s group development stages. The first step is “Forming”, where the group begins orientating themselves with other group members (PSU 2012). When we first meet everyone displays kindness and are very presentable because the trust has not developed throughout the group yet (PSU 2012). In the second stage individuals begin to voice their opinions and thoughts on the assignment and ways they would like to complete the assignment. I have found this to be the longest part of collaborating between start and the finish of a group assignment. Group members are unsure about their ideas and second-guess themselves when adding their opinion. After an idea or topic is agreed upon the group discusses the roles of the group members. In the third stage “Norming” group members have agreed on their task and begin working. If a conflict arises it is settled quickly within the group with a quick solution to the issue. The topic is broke down into sections for individuals or teams to work on to complete the project in the most productive way. Each group member...

Class Room Observation

...participate in a reading and writing block called “literacy and writing workshop.” The classroom is organized into five different levels with one group having one extra person; the levels are based on scoring of reading assessments. The groups are rotated so that each may spend 15 minutes cycles with either the teacher or Para-educator. The groups not with an instructor were to work on the “Daily-5” (explanation later) until their scheduled lesson. After the students finish their lesson, they are to fill the remainder of the workshop time working on “Daily-5.” This workshop is part of a regular routine. The students understand that after a reading a story with the teacher, they are verbally given a writing assignment. The assignment is usually to write a five sentence paragraph and color a picture related to the reading. READING ASSIGNMENT I observed Mrs. Guimond begin at 0915 with a group of five boys. It is a reading group that struggles with pronunciation and comprehension. The group individually takes turns reading a paragraph from a short story. The story is always 12 paragraphs long and has pictures that relate to the topic (it is designed for groups with six members). After each student reads his paragraph two questions are asked; one is to the reader of the paragraph and the second to another member of the group. During the questioning, Mrs. Guimond speaks to only one student at a time and the others are...
