Groupthink In Lord Of The Flies

Influence is a big factor on decision making. Whether it be a good decision or a bad decision, choices are often made based upon what others do. The boys in Lord of the Flies are a perfect example of carrying out groupthink, the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group in a way that discourages creativity or individual responsibility. There are many cases of groupthink throughout this story, from doing good things like electing a captain for keeping order and carrying out important tasks, to raping boys, to savage acts such as murdering.
Jack believes that he would be the best kid to act as captain of the whole island. Ralph obviously disagrees and continues acting as the chief, as he was selected. As a result of this, Jack ends up forming his own group of savages. His group is as inhumane as they come, committing such foul acts such as rape and murder. His followers do exactly what he says to do, no matter …show more content…
This is a normal thing to do it you are stranded on an island, and is a good way to make decisions and keep rule on the island. This is a good example of groupthink because Ralph is a very good leader and will lead the group in a positive way. One of the first things he does is call for a meeting, which is a good way for the boys to interact and stay organized. He tells everyone that they are not allowed to speak during the meetings unless they are holding the conch, which is a symbol of order. The most important thing to him is to keep a fire at the top of the mountain to help get saved, which is shown when he says, “There’s another thing. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire” (Golding 38). With the help of the smartest kid on the island and his friend, Piggy, Ralph and the kids have as good of a chance as they could have to get rescued or make it off the

Comparing 1984 And Lord Of The Flies

...Instead of change being made, the division of power remains present, only with different class members. This dichotomous pair of conversions creates a societal cycle of transition, from dystopia to utopia to dystopia again. Intellectuals have long noted its presence and writers across the span of history have written a variety of warnings against entering this dangerous series of change. Two widely celebrated pieces of literature, 1984 and Lord of the Flies are modern examples of novels warning against reformation that goes too far. In both works, people attempt to build a more perfect society, but the efforts result in evils far greater than the ones already present. Their respective worlds degenerate into something far more sinister, and instead of utopian, it becomes dystopian instead Both novels have an overarching theme of how society can devolve into something much worse a lesson all too relevant in the...

Quiet: Power of Introverts

...MORE ADVANCE NOISE FOR QUIET “An intriguing and potentially lifealtering examination of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Gentle is powerful … Solitude is socially productive … These important counterintuitive ideas are among the many reasons to take Quiet to a quiet corner and absorb its brilliant, thought-provoking message.” —ROSABETH MOSS KANTER, professor at Harvard Business School, author of Confidence and SuperCorp “An informative, well-researched book on the power of quietness and the 3/929 virtues of having a rich inner life. It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. This book is brilliant...

It provides both an in-depth look at attempts to reform policy making over the last fourteen years and draws on both interviews with senior civil servants and ministers, in the last government, to look at the experience of policy making. It also draws on our analysis of government’s own evaluations of policy, our ‘Policy Reunions’ looking at the factors behind policy success and the extensive academic literature on policy making. As such, it forms the evidential and analytic base for our recommendations report, Making Policy Better. This report is largely the work of the Institute for Government’s Senior Researcher Michael Hallsworth.
