Guimaras, whose capital is Jordan, is a scenic island province which is part of Western Visayas region. Located in the Gulf of Panay, it is situated between the two major islands of Panay and Negros Occidental. Only 60, 457 hectares in land area, it offsets its size by its natural beauty and terrain. With its appealing sites full of history and excitement, it is a place waiting to be discovered by those who prefer to tackle the road less travelled. The island offers a lot of interesting activities for the not so faint-hearted. With its unspoiled beaches and pristine white sand, tourists are tempted to dive in and enjoy its beauty. To some, it is known as the Mango Country as it produces one of the sweetest mangoes on earth. To appreciate this wonderful bounty from Earth, the locals celebrate Manggahan Festival, held during the month of May; it offers tourists the chance to experience the sweetness of the hailed fruit. Visitors can taste a variety of mango products created by the residents. It not only promotes the major product of the province but also the cultural heritage the people of Guimaras are very proud of. Aside from its mangoes, the island is best known for its white, immaculate beaches and calm waters with colourful fish and corals abound; islets that offer relief from the hustle and bustle of the city, sometimes offering visitors the a glimpse of the rare red shrimp that can only be seen during high tide and places that offer meditation for the weary soul. Snorkelling, island hopping, mountain biking, wall climbing, rappelling and even paintball are just a few of the activities an adventurous visitor can experience while vacationing on the island. For those who prefer to relax, there are deluxe resorts one can avail of. Nagarao Island Resort is just one of the luxurious resorts tourists can go to to experience some valuable R and R. The Trappist Monastery is the only men’s monastery in the country. This serves a place of reflection to those who wish to seek peace through self-contemplation. Historical sites such as the Guisi Lighthouse, built in the 18th century, once guided fisherman and sailors as navigate the calm seas of the island and the Balaan Bukid, a place of pilgrimage to most Catholic Filipinos. They would hike up the mountain every summer during Holy Week to commemorate Christ’s crucifixion. Visitors will not find it a hard time to communicate with the locals as they are fluent in English as most Filipinos are in the region. As most Filipinos, people from Guimaras are friendly and easy to deal with. There a number of tourist outposts where they can ask information from. Guimaras can only be reached via motorized boat from Iloilo City. Travel time takes about 20-30 minutes from Iloilo port to the island. Upon reaching, there is a lot of transportation one can avail some of. As part of the adventure the island offers, some roads are only accessible by four-wheel drive, an adventure that naturally goes along with the place. Guimaras, an island like no other, would definitely take one’s breath away.

Electricity consumption from the five sectors (residential, commercial, transportation, industrial, and agricultural) were calculated using different models and assumptions. These values were projected to the year 2045 in order to predict the total electricity demand on the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly bases. There is an average of 262.28 MW demand from the computed consumptions which was translated to fuel requirements considering the existing, upcoming, decommissioning, and the reserve. A total of 284.77 MW plant capacity was calculated for 2045. Assuming that bituminous coal will be used as the main fuel for running a Coal-fired powerplant in the future, a fuel requirement of 12.25...

Concepcion Plant

...THE PROPOSED 200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Concepcion, Iloilo is on track in time for calls to put up additional electricity sources in the light of the acute power shortage in Mindanao. Iloilo Provincial Administrator Raul N. Banias said he met with top officials of Palm Concepcion Power Corp. (PCPC) in Metro Manila to discuss development status of the proposed coal-fired power plant project. A former mayor of Concepcion, Banias was instrumental in helping DM Consunji, Inc. (DMCI) Power Corp., the original proponent of the plant, in getting public acceptance for the power plant. Although the Department of Environment and Natural Resources already issued and environmental compliance certificate (ECC) to the project sometime in 2007, DMCI did not initiate construction after failing to secure power supple agreements with distribution utilities in Western Visayas. In November 2010, A. Brown Co., Inc. (ABCI), through subsidiaries Palm Thermal Consolidated Holdings Corp. and Panay Consolidated Holdings Corp., bought DMCI Power Corp.’s proposed coal-fired power plant in Concepcion. The new owners then formed subsidiary PCPC to spearhead the future construction and operation of the plant. ABCI is the investment arm of businessman Walter Brown which is primarily engaged in the business of real estate development but has interests in power, property development and investments in other companies. In February 2012, A. Brown announced that it has tapped BDO Capital and Investment...

The Work

...Carina Tan 25 IV- Hope July 13, 2015 This house believes that the government should invest heavily on the exploration of oil resources in the country I. Argument The government should not invest heavily on the exploration of oil resources in the country because of the adverse impacts of oil transport on the environment. II. Evidence On August 11, 2006, MT Solar 1, carrying 2 million liters of Industrial or bunker fuel oil sank approximately 10 nautical miles south of Guimaras immediately leaking 200,000 liters of oil. It sailed 2 days before from Bataan to deliver oil to the Western Mindanao Power Corporation. This incident brought large scale damages to marine resources and to the livelihood of people in the affected areas due to the volume of oil spilled to the seas. This was considered the worst oil spill disaster in the Philippine maritime history. III. Analysis Although it is not always the case, the more investments the government makes on oil exploration, the higher probability of occurrences of oil spil incidents. Statistics show that the transport of oil by tanker is as dangerous as pumping it by underwater pipeline. The main problems of violation of safety standards and spillages occur during loading and unloading and bunker operations at terminals. In oil exploration, the transport piping used is made of metals, which can corrode. This corrosion causes pipes to break which in turn, contaminates the land and waters...

Exxon Valdez and Tylenol Reflection Paper

...I. Background Information/ Additional Perspectives A. Exxon Valdez Oil Spill March 24, 1989 marked the date of the largest oil tanker spill in the history of United States as the tanker Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska’s Prince William Sound. This incident put Exxon into a crisis as it made the Alaskan region into a worldwide symbol of environmental chaos. The enormity of the ecological ruin and the phenomenal task of cleanup caught the attention of the many nations. Many workers and volunteers flooded the area for its restoration which required extensive labor and $2.1 billion of Exxon funding. The crisis is blamed to the following reasons: the faults were Exxon’s inadequate equipments on the ship and the insufficient number of trained members. Another thing is that a crew was unable to maneuver the ship properly due to exhaustion with work aboard. It was also traced that Captain Joseph Hazelwood was under the influence of alcohol which was the reason why he cannot give proper instructions to the staff. Hazelwood's activities in town and on the ship are the main focuses of the investigation. This also became the basis of widespread media sensation. Indeed, Exxon’s reputation suffered severely. Some Public Relation Practitioners said that Exxon seriously worsened the damage to the public due to its slow and insufficient responses. Exxon also failed to establish itself as a company concerned about the problems it had caused....

Mangoes in the Philippines

...mangoes. They all taste different from the original Philippine Mango. There are even varieties here that says “Manila Mangoes” in the sticker, but the taste does not say so. There are many mango varieties in the Philippines. Champagne mango or Carabao mango is probably the most famous in terms of taste. This mango variety is the sweetest mango that I ever tasted. It is also the mango variety that the Philippines export to other countries. There are different strains (breed) produced from Carabao mango — one of which is called Sweet Elena. If I am not mistaken, this breed originated somewhere in Zambales. Sweet Elena mango is the sweetest that I ever had. It is probably the sweetest mango in the world. There are also the well loved Cebu and Guimaras mangoes which are of world class quality. Filipinos enjoy eating mango regardless if it is green or ripe. The Pico mango or Manggang Pico is best eaten regardless of its maturity. I enjoy eating green mangoes — especially if it is extra sour. Pico mango is my first choice whenever I want to eat Manggang Hilaw with Bagoong. Don’t get me wrong, green carabao mangoes are good too. It is just a matter of preference. Did you know that the Philippines holds the record...

Ngo Assessment: Greenpeace

...NGO Assessment on Greenpeace In 1969, the U.S. announced that they were going to test a 1.2-megaton nuclear bomb on the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, Vancouver. This disturbed the Canadians because it might cause earthquakes and tidal waves, which could sweep from one end of the Pacific to the other. They tried to stop the U.S. bomb test. All sort of concerned citizens started to meet until the Don’t Make a Wave Committee was created. Don't Make a Wave was an informal committee, endorsed by the Sierra Club, the United Church of Canada, the B.C. Federation of Labour, the Canadian Voice of Women, and other peace and ecology organizations. They created uproar, making noise about the tidal wave image. The committee met in the basement of the Vancouver Unitarian Church. The meetings were exhausting and seemed to go nowhere. One day, while having a cup of coffee, wife of Jim Bohlen, Marie, suggested that they sail a boat up there and confront the bomb. Jim liked the idea and told the committee about it. The Don’t Make a Wave ad hoc group adopted the plan and opts for the name of the boat. A quiet 23-year-old Canadian carpenter, union organizer, and ecologist, Bill Darnell, who rarely spoke at the meetings, added sheepishly "Make it a green peace." The group sailed but was detained before they reached the testing area. With this act, the group created a big fuss that encouraged U.S. Demonstrations every major Canadian city. They adopted the Green Peace name in 1971 because it has a...

Social Movement

...About Gabriela's Women's Party Gabriela Women’s Party is a sectoral party dedicated to promoting the rights and welfare of marginalized and under-represented Filipino women through participation in the country’s electoral system and organs of governance. It is a sectoral party composed of women 18 years and above, having varied occupations, education, interests, ethnic origin, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation. Gabriela Women’s Party seeks to harness the potential, initiative, skills, and leadership of marginalized women towards empowerment, justice, and equality. Her Story Women’s role in Philippine society has been shaped, by and large, by the Filipina’s demand for social justice, equality, freedom and democracy. That yearning and her consequent struggle have had a long and glorious, albeit invisible, history. Almost 400 years after she led a regional revolt against Spanish colonizers, Gabriela Silang remains a model, a beacon, and an icon to women of the Philippines. She was the seminal Filipina, leading long after her death her sisters to the struggle against social inequities and foreign domination. In 1984, fuelled by the resistance against the Marcos dictatorship and an overwhelming need for significant economic and political change in the archipelago, women from all walks of life – worker, peasant, urban poor, indigenous, middle class, artist, religious – banded together to set up a national women’s coalition. They took the name of the 18th...
