One Friday morning Nance lee is an afro-American girl who lives in a Negro neighborhood with her parrents. She is pretty, smart and she fits in well with the life of school. Nancy Lee does well in school and the teachers like her "You have been an excellent student" (P.61 L.31). She is at senior art class at the George Washington's high school, where she just painted a picture, which is in the competition of the art scholarship of the year. At the beginning, she wins the competition, but when the judges find out that she is a Negro, they give away the 1st. place to another person. Nancy is a girl with her heart at the right place as she thinks much of other people "now mother can have a new coat next winter" (P.63. L.10).This is what she is thinking about doing in the future if she would win the scholarship the next years. The dreams of Nancy also show that she is a goodhearted person, especially when it comes to people of her own race. The way that her dreams is pointing out her goodness, is the dream about America being a country without race discrimination. Nancy Lee and Miss O'Shay, who is the vice principal, have some things in common. They are both from another country, and both the Irish and the black people who immigrated to America have been exposed to discrimination "years ago we were called the dirty Irish" (P.67. L.1) and "we were invited to go back where we came from." (P.67 L.2). Another thing that Nancy and Miss O'Shay have in common is the believing in the American dream, the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
