Atopic Asthma Case Study

...When an individual is born no dendrite cells inhabit the airway and only when this epithelial barrier is damaged or is activated do these dendrite cells migrate and maturate from the bone marrow (Kudo, Ishigatsubo & Aoki 2013; Rodriguez et al. 2011). The immune system is initiated by the binding of a pathogen on epithelial pattern associated recognition receptors. This then activates a release of pro inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and antimicrobial peptides that trigger the immune cells (Parker & Prince 2011; Lambrecht & Hammad 2012). This activation of the epithelial cells is thought the key event in the recognition of allergens that activates local dendritic cells. Dendritic cells are antigen presenting cells that induct the adaptive immune response by presenting the antigen to T cells in the mediastinal lymph nodes via the MHC/T-cell receptor complex and directly on T cells to promote Th2 cytokine production for protective immunity (Robinson 2010; Hammad et al....

Art as a Means for Change

...Art as a means for change There are many things art is good for. Expressing one’s emotions, to let a loved one know how much they mean to a person. To visually represent what one has seen and experienced. To save a moment in time for others to enjoy the beauty of it all. Above all else, art is there to convey a message. To put the idea of the artist into the head of another. This is why art has been used time and time again to express political, social and humanitarian injustices throughout history. Art, drawing to be exact, was the first way to express the day to day life of another human being. To save the ideas and memories of early man all the way to modern man. Every period of human history since this point has been filled with the carvings, drawings, paintings, writings and musings of humans who have felt betrayed by the government or community that was suppose to be there for them. Every person has a side of the story that they would like to share, art is one of the easiest ways to get a lasting point across. Princess Hijab uses art in this context to express a distaste for modern day ideologies regarding what is beauty when it comes to the human body. “...her dressing up of billboards is a symbolic act of resistance meant to reassert a “physical and mental integrity” against what she calls the “visual terrorism” of advertising.” (Aburawa 30) Blurring the lines between what is acceptable public art, with advertising, and graffiti, with her movement...

Argument Essay

...The Toilet Seat Debate A major question comes into play when there are two people of the opposite sex using the same toilet. This trivial question evokes a certain amount of emotion from both males and females in many households. This question is raised many times yet no solution is found. It's almost a certainty that unless someone has not shared a toilet with the opposite sex, one has undoubtedly debated at least to a certain extent whether or not the toilet seat should be down or up. Which is it? This research shows that the toilet was made with a lid for a reason. Gentleman, that reason is not for a back rest while doing the deed. It’s actually made to close. If everyone, not just men, would put the seat down and close the lid, we would have such a smaller issue on our hands. That smaller issue would be making this a habit. Hopefully, readers can benefit from this essay and gain some useful knowledge regarding this issue to say the least. There are many resources that explain the pros and cons of leaving the toilet seat in the downward position. For example, an article written by Martin A. Andresen, “Up or Down? An Efficiency-based Argument for Optimal Toilet Seat Placement”. Andresen theorizes that there is an actual mathematical equation that can be used to determine efficiency. Andreson concluded, “…results clearly show that if the number of females is greater than or equal to the number of males the optimal placement of the toilet seat is down” (Andresen)...

Nomological Networks

...NOMOLOGICAL NETWORKS Nomological network is a representation of the concepts (constructs) of interest in a study, their observable manifestations, and the interrelationships among and between these. The term "nomology" has been derived from the Greek, meaning "lawful", or in philosophy of science terms, "lawlike". It was Cronbach and Meehl's view of construct validity that in order to provide evidence that a measure has construct validity, a Nomological network has to be developed for its measure. The elements of a nomological network are: * Must have at least two constructs; * Theoretical propositions, specifying linkages between constructs: "As age increases, memory loss increases". * Correspondence rules, allowing a construct to be measured. Operationalization: "Age is measured by asking "how old are you?" * Empirical constructs or variables that can actually be measured. These are operationalized theoretical constructs. * Empirical linkages: Hypotheses before data collection. Empirical generalization after data collection. What is the Nomological Net? The nomological network is an idea that was developed by Lee Cronbach and Paul Meehl in 1955 (Cronbach, L. and Meehl, P. (1955). Construct validity in psychological tests, Psychological Bulletin, 52, 4, 281-302.) as part of the American Psychological Association's efforts to develop standards for psychological testing. The term "nomological" is derived from Greek and means "lawful", so the nomological...

...French Revolution Introduction: Between 1789 and 1802 France was wracked by a revolution which radically changed the government, administration, military and culture of the nation as well as plunging Europe into a series of wars. France went from a largely feudal state under an absolutist monarch to a republic which executed the king and then to an empire under Napoleon Bonaparte. Although historians are agreed that the French Revolution started in 1789 they are divided on the end date. A few histories stop in 1795 with the creation of the Directory, some stop in 1799 with the creation of the Consulate, while many more stop in 1802 when Napoleon Bonaparte became Consul for Life or 1804 when he became Emperor. A rare few continue to the restoration of the monarchy in 1814. This site prefers 1802. The French Revolution in Brief: A medium term financial crisis, caused partly by French involvement in the American War of Independence, led to the French crown first calling an Assembly of Notables and then, in 1789, a meeting called the Estates General in order to impose new tax laws. The Estates General was composed of three ‘Estates’: the clergy, the nobility and the rest of France. This 'third estate', informed by long term doubts over the constitution of France and the development of a new social order of bourgeoisie, declared itself a National Assembly and decreed the suspension of tax, taking French sovereignty into its own hands. After a power struggle which...
