The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
Hands Washed? Check.
Fancy apron? Check.
Nervous? Not at all.
Starting from a young age I had a feeling that I could do anything; failure and fear were never options. My first attempt at cooking was no different. I quickly learned that sometimes you need to fail to succeed, but success is what everyone tries for because you can’t always get it right the first time. With me being a determined eleven-year-old, I wanted to prove my independence, show there was no need for me to babied, and mainly just wanted to relieve my stomach from the feeling of hunger.
My task was to cook pancakes and bacon. I turned on the stove, and lightly whisked all my ingredients as my wiki How directions instructed. Pouring the mixture into the greased skillet, I watched as the bubbles started to form. I was unaware how to tell when the edges were dry, so I kept it on the first side, until I saw smoke coming from the under the pancake. I froze in panic; thinking I had started a fire.
I had neglected to flip the pancake over in time, and it burned setting off the smoke detectors. The loudest noise you can imagine just wouldn’t stop; I knew then I was in major trouble. Running frantically down the stairs my mom came luckily with my grandmother, my amazing savior, to stop my mom from screaming in anger. She then grabs the spatula to throw away the burnt pancake as my grandmother turned on fans to disarm the smoke detector. I could do nothing, but bow my head in shame and wait to be scolded.
My mom just grabbed me and held me close.
I looked up from the messy skillet, my mom’s domain desecrated. There was no sign of anger on her face, only love, and a red splotch on her hand where she accidently touched the skillet. I was shaken now, shamed by the realization that I had hurt her. Yet, she never showed it. She never does. She accepted my apologies and worked beside me to help clean. Only when I seemed to not notice did she go to check her burn.
She and I both acted impulsively that day; only her act of irrational behavior had been for my sake. I believe it to be the same irrationality that compelled her to be so independent while raising two kids as a single parent. She stood alone, enduring hardships that come along with that lifestyle for the sake of her children. I stood alone for my own sake, to further some illusion of independence. In reality I have always depended on people like her. I depend on their life-giving encouragement and the warm unconditional love that makes everything else possible. She inspires me and lets me know it is okay to fail. After some supervised practice my mom trusted me in the kitchen alone. I learned the lesson that part of being independent and responsible is to know when to ask for help. As I saw in my mom’s quiet resolution, I felt invigorated, encouraged, and I saw how her loving sacrifices are bases of my success. People like my mom stand with me, and it is on their sacrifices that I build my success.

Short Story

...beaten Babby Bobby for playing in the tool shed, Babby Bobby had to be taken to the emergency room because he kept coughing up blood and had received another beating for causing such fuss. School was no better, at school the other children would put frogs in his desk because they scared him and wiped boogers on his jacket. The teachers never chose him to answer questions even though his hand was always first in the air. Babby Bobby was really very bright but no one noticed. The only people that noticed a thin, shy child like him were the bullies. His days were dark but his nights darker still, Babby Bobby would dream the most terrible dreams, dreams of blood and heat and falling, always falling deeper and deeper through the earth. One morning in early spring Babby Bobby was walking to school when he found a shell. Normally he wouldn't have picked up anything from the floor (his father had beaten him often for picking up things from the floor) but this shell shone in the sun, it sang and danced before his eyes. It was the most beautiful thing Babby Bobby had ever seen. All the way to school his hand would slip into his pocket to stroke the shell with the tips of his fingers. It made his whole body shake at the touch and he swore that this was his and no one else’s. All the pain and the loneliness and the loss would be forgotten as long as this shell was his. Inside the shell was pink as a kitten’s tongue and outside was run through with colours so bright and dazzling they couldn't...

...Chapter 11: Case Three: Lifebuoy/Unilever Asia Private Limited, p. 168 1. The camera follows a little boy around his back yard and through the wooded lot to the old baseball diamond, before he makes his way down an alley to his best friend’s house. Along the way his hands encounter a multitude of things from bugs to a frog and an old toy he found in the trash while walking down the alley. While at his friend’s house his mother calls him home for supper and his hands make contact with even more questionable substance! Upon entering his house his mother tells him to wash his hands so hastily he washes his hand and hurries to the table. He jumps up on his chair and reaches for a drum stich as hastily as he washed his hands. Just before his hand reaches the drum stick the camera freezes. The camera then pans in on his hand to a microscopic level revealing no germs before panning back out and sending everything back into motion as the family scurries to the dining room table to eat. The commercial ends as the camera pans in on the bottle of Lifebuoy soap on the bathroom sink. 2. Lifebuoy’s first attempt to market this new hand soap was based on its lab proven ability to kill more germs than the leading competitor. Consumers where so convinced their brand was better they did not believe Lifebuoy’s claims. Lifebuoy was determined not to make the same mistake twice and thus searched for another angle. While observing children an associate had an idea; tie the faster acting more effective...

As his head was able to reach through the earth, he clawed harder and eventually was able to dig himself out. He stood tall, looking at the three Jato's being confused. He chukcled. 'I told you I had many tricks, Jatomaru.' he said as he took a quick glance at the katana his clone had used. He took off his shinobi-like glove with a metallic plate on it, as he bit his thumb with his right fang, smearing a japanese symbol onto the blade. 'Rest, worhty clone...

Body Language

...make ourselves understood not only by words. We send messages to the people around us also by facial expressions and body movements.we call it "body language ", which is also a way of communication. For example, A smile and handshake show welcome ,Waving one's hand is to say"goodbye", nodding the head means agreement, while shaking it means disgreement .Putting up a hand means"May I ask a question?". These gestures are very common and are widespread since they are having the same meanings around the world. However, different countries still have different body languages due to different culture, which will affect the way people communicate. FOR EXAMPLE, In Arab, people often greet by kissing on both cheeks. In Japan people greet by bowing .In the Unite States, people shake hands to show"their greeting". And the gesture of putting a hand on a person' neck is different for Chinese and Americans. For Chinese,it is to say"someone will be killed". For Americans, it means "I'm full, cant eat any more”. And crossing one's legs in the United States is a sign of being relaxed. However in Korea, this is not allowed. In China, people hand everything with both hands to show their respect, but for Muslims, they think the left hand is unclean, so they do not eat or pass something with it. Touch or not touch? Whether or not touching during conversation is acceptable depends on the culture in different countries. For example, the French and Italians love to continually touch as they...

Child Psychology

...substage of the sensorimotor period the child probably is in, and tied the notions of assimilation and accommodation to specific infant behaviors. Observation Paper #1 A couple (husband and wife) were sitting on the grass at a music festival with a young male infant, who was probably between 12-18 months old. He sat on his mother's lap with a group of the adult's friends around them. They were sitting together on a blanket with a clearing in the middle for the child to play and move around while they all enjoyed the music and talked to each other. As I was sitting there, I observed the infant's mother hand him a small box of wheat thins which he easily grasped in his hands and held, looking at it for a little while. Then he dropped the box which hit his mother's foot and rustled to the ground. His mother picked the box back up for him and put it back into his hands. He then dropped it again on her foot and it landed again on the ground next to them. According to Piaget the child is in substage 5 of the sensorimotor period. The child is testing the cause and effect of his dropping the box of wheat thins on his mother's foot next to him. He is causing the box to fall, and then watching and studying it as it bounces off her foot and finally rests on the ground (causing a rustling noise from the crackers). Piaget would also think that he is experimenting with varying...

Knowing Body Language

...sending a different message with something as simple as a smile.” (Krischer Goodman a40) Body language can be helpful to know the emotions of someone, and when you know someone’s emotions you can generally predict or alter their motive. Knowing these cues can be helpful in situations like a job interview, on a date, or in an argument. When at an interview it can be very stressful to figure out who would be a good applicant to hire for a job. If an applicant and the boss are talking there are a few things that the employer can notice that would be helpful. People will lie to get a job, it happens; let’s say that the boss asks a question about the applicant’s experience, and when answering, the applicant covers part of their face with their hand. They most likely are lying. When people lie they tend to take more time to think of a response and when they do respond they tend to talk faster. Men will make their voice deeper and women will make their voice higher pitched when lying. If the applicant is sitting with their arms crossed then they are closed-off to the employer, and in other words they’re just not feeling it. If the employer asks a question and the applicant touches the back of their neck that’s a pacifying act and it doesn’t mean...

Grip the second chopstick with your first hand’s index finger and thumb, leaving a space with your middle finder. You may use the other hand to adjust our grip on the chopsticks to a comfortable position. Use that same hand to make sure the narrow tips of both chopsticks are lined up evenly and are parallel to each other. The Craftsmanship of Jamaican Woodwork

...September 28, 2013 Michaelia Henry ID No. 0210073 M.Arch 1 Course: Critical Theories in Architecture Lecturer: Arch. Jacquiann Lawton Critical Theories in Architecture: Modernity Exploring Research Methodology – Writing Dialectical History Thesis Statement Craftsmanship is the basic human impulse to do a job well for its own sake. It involves Creative Thought, Precision, Apprenticeship, Crafting an Object Well, adhering to The Structure of the Workshop and the Practice of the Intelligent Hand. Contemporary Jamaican Woodcraft is an example of Craftsmanship. Introduction Fashioning furniture, doors, windows and other architectural elements out of timber is an old practice. Before the industrial period, many of these items would be crafted by hand. The effort and care taken to create each piece; seen in the final product. This is one way of romanticizing traditional woodwork. A more cynical view would be to criticize the minor imperfections of these pieces – the uneven pattern created by carving by hand, the lack of perfect symmetry in the manmade spindle form. This cynical view has some validity – if; the priority of making the object is the actualization of perfection. Social commentators like Richard Sennett believe this kind of priority misses the true point of Craftsmanship – the desire to do something well for its own sake. I agree. The actualization of Craftsmanship is not about the making a perfect object. It is about the intrinsic need to do a job well for its own sake. There...
