"Hanging Fire" is a brief poem written by Audre Lorde that expresses the feelings of teenagers in a simple and direct context. The title "hanging fire" refers to a firearm that has been pulled its trigger, but is delayed in igniting. In this case, it represents the girl being hesitant and insecure about her future, therefore is neglected in going on, as in the bullet that is supposed to fire in “hanging fire”. Right in the beginning, Lorde is straightforward to us in her subject with the sentence, "I am fourteen"(line 1), and we therefore becomes aware of the fact that this poem is about a teenager. Right away it is followed by a personification, "my skin has betrayed me"(line 2).Of course, this cannot be taken literally as it really means who she is in another’s eyes is not who she is deep down. In using the word “betrayed”, Lorde now creates a sense that this teenage girl has no control over her actions and is debilitated by outside powers. This idea can also be seen throughout the context. In the lines “There is nothing I want to do/and too much/that has to be done” (lines 19-21), we may recognize that the unavoidable pressures teenagers receive, whether they are from their peers or parents. The effects from peer pressure can also be seen in the line, “I have to learn how to dance/in time for the next party”. When Lorde uses, "the boy I cannot live without"(line 3), readers perceive this naive fairytale-like dream of the-prince-on-a-white-horse and the child-like longing for romance tales when we first read the Anderson Fairytales despite the “hardships” she has in life and her disappointment over the fact that her true love still has not shown up yet expressed in, “still sucks his thumb/in secret”(lines 4&5) The girl apparently has not yet matured and whine about her looks: “how come my knees are always so ashy”(lines 6-7) and “why do I have to be/the

...Stratification Media Analysis Adriane Benjamin SOC/100 Becky Russell Stratification Media Analysis A Time to kill is a film about an African American family living in a small town in Mississippi, where the daughter of an African American couple was raped by a white male that was an affiliated with the Klu Klux Klan. The father of the little girl ended up having to stand trial because he killed one of the men that were involved in his daughter’s rape. He had a long-time friend by the name of Jake Brigance, who were a white male. The main idea circled around whether a black man should ever be allowed to kill a white man, under any circumstances. The issue is not murder but discrimination, and it is compound by the fact that America is a primarily a white country. The issue through this all was racism and being in the south in 1984, where whites still treated the blacks poorly. “This was Mississippi, where for years whites shot blacks for any reason or no reason and no one cared; where whites raped blacks and it was considered sport; where blacks were hanged for fighting back.” ― John Grisham, A Time to Kill Set in the deep south of the back fields of northern Mississippi in the 1980’s, the setting was perfect for there to be battle between the blacks and the white, as it has been brewing since before the civil rights days. Placing the story in this time and place is the most natural discovery of buried hatchets and the most subtle revelations of festering wounds and double...

Jonathan Edwards Rhetoric

...Jonathan Edwards began to implement the ideals of the “Great Awakening” in his sermons as a response to the Enlightenment, solidifying his place as a “fire and brimstone” preacher. Jonathan Edwards’ intellect, exceptional writing abilities, and masterful use of persuasive, sentiment-driven rhetoric have allowed his works the blessing of endurance, yet his words leave a disturbing impact. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” demonstrates Edwards’ inability to preach in an innocuous manner; his intensity furthers an individual into religious precarity and a state of detriment. Edwards’ sensationalist works are an effective mechanism for fear mongering; however, they prove ineffectual long-term as it diminishes the value of Christianity. With his utilization of persuasive diction, harsh...

Shutter Island

...Robert Kimble GMMD211 Shutter Island Scene Analysis The “Opening Scene” The 2010 movie Shutter Island is a psychological thriller that focuses on our main character “Teddy”. Portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, our protagonist believes he is a U.S. Marshal who is headed to a remote island, which houses an asylum for the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of one of their patients. The harsh reality is that “Teddy” is one of those patients, and the opening scene sets the tone for what is to follow. The opening scene starts with a greyish screen and only the diegetic sound of the waves, symbolizing perhaps being lost at sea with nothing but water surrounding you. We then hear the horn of a ship, followed by a long shot of the ship taking shape as it emerges from the fog. At the front of the ship we see a person standing alone facing the direction the ship is heading. This symbolizes that whomever it is, they are gaining clarity of what is to come. Cut to a medium shot, showing the interior of the boat where we see someone leaning over a toilet and hear them throwing up, meanwhile we also hear the rustling of the chains shown hanging in the forefront. Cut to an extreme close up of our main character looking into the mirror and saying to himself “pull yourself together Teddy, pull yourself together.” This scene wreaks of split personality disorder. This could have a parallel meaning that while “Teddy” is fighting with himself to regain control, it is making...

...inmates moved to the Ellis Unit. 1999 the male death row moved Polunsky. Capital punishment has been used in the state of Texas since 1819. As of April 2014 1,270 people have been executed. The state of Texas has executed more inmates than any other state in spite of that two states California and Florida have a larger death row population than Texas. Since 1923 TDCJ has been in charge of executions in the state. TDCJ houses death row prisoners after they are transported from their counties of conviction, and administers the death penalty on a condemned person’s court-scheduled date of execution aside from any last minute stays. Texas has used a variety of execution methods: from 1845 -1924 executions were carried out by hanging the other method used during this time was shooting by firing squad and this was used only four times during the Civil War period. From 1924 to 1964 , Texas changed its execution laws, requiring the executions be...

Everyday Use

..."Everyday Use” - Literary Analysis Alice walker writes about the importance of inheriting family heritage and how it passes on to generations. This story is based on conflicts of two generations; on the bonds of a mother and daughter and their legacy which is symbolized as two hand stitched quilts. The narrator, Mama introduces us to her two daughters who have conflicting minds. Mama is disappointed on the behavior and the tension that takes place when Dee forces her to make a difficult decision about who gets the quilts. The story unfolds when Mama’s eldest daughter Dee, returns home for the first time after finishing college and starts claiming for possessions. The younger Maggie has never left home and is shown to be of quiet character, who was severely burned in a house fire when she was a child due to which her sympathetic and generous nature is over shadowed by her ugly scarred face. Dee, being stylish and blessed with good looks is the centre of agitation between the family and invokes jealously. Her feet appear "as if God himself had shaped them with a certain style." (385). Around Dee, the younger sister is a coward and since the fire she walks with "chin on her chest, eyes on the ground." (384) . The narrator is protective around her daughters hoping that Maggie becomes self confident and stands up for her right. Under the Black Flag

...Cordingly, David. Under The Black Flag: The Romance And The Reality Of Life Among The Pirates. Harcourt, Inc.: Orlando, FL, 1997. Part 1: Summary The point of this book was to put aside the myths about pirates and replace them with facts. There are many fictional myths about pirates and their lives on the sea. Many books and movies have built pirates up to be romantical heroes instead of the ruthless savages they were, so this book focuses on separating fact from fiction about life as a pirate. Many plays and books such as Peter Pan, Treasure Island, and many others have used pirates as characters for many years. Many of us grew up watching pirates on television, but most of the time in pursuit of entertainment the truth is lost. Although pirates did dress in the fancy clothes that they looted from different ships; they did not always have the elaborate outfits worn by pirates in the movies. One piece of truth about pirates though is that they armed themselves to the teeth with weapons. The book also explains how some women survived life on the seas. Some women such as Mary Read and Anne Bonny had no trouble disguising themselves on pirate ships. These women had to deal with severe hardships, and they had to make sure their identity was concealed at all times. These two women were familiar with this life though because they had been raised as boys all their life. When they were caught they were also treated like men, and many times women pirates were also...

Capital Punishment the Right to Kill

...CAPITAL PUNISHMNET: THE RIGHT TO KILL Capital Punishment: The Right to Kill Debra Gonzalez University of Phoenix Axia Capital Punishment: The Right to Kill Capital punishment has been a source of debate since its inception; the public continues to dispute this highly controversial issue. A struggle exists between Americans who are fighting for a safe and secure society and those individuals who want to abolish the death penalty. Capital punishment may be a controversial subject; however, it is a critical issue that must be addressed in today's violent society. Many people can not decide if the death penalty provides the necessary punishment and deterrent effect that is needed for criminals but, capital punishment is an aspect of criminal sentencing that needs to be evaluated. The United States Supreme Court judgment in Furman vs. Georgia in 1972 came to the decision that the death penalty was a violation of the eight amendment because of the inconsistent manner by which it was carried out. However, in the 1970s, 34 states across the nation ratified new legislation on capital punishment that met the standards set by the Supreme Court. The most significant change in the history of death penalty cases transpired when United States legislators and the Congress passed what is now know as the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act .This made a capital punishment sentence possible for various federal crimes. Across this Nation there were approximately...

Conflict

...Friends are just friends because they really do come and go. That is what I learned is the last few months of high school. I am credible because I was part of an ego conflict with my friend, researched interpersonal conflicts in Beebe’s textbook, and wrote this analysis. The central idea is that friends need to communicate effectively with each other before a misunderstanding can quickly turn into a conflict resulting the ending of a long friendship. The following analysis will explain the type of conflict that occurred, the type of conflict management style that was used by both parties and the four conflict management skills that could have improved the conflict. The introduction has been discussed; it is now time to move forward with the type on conflict that occurred. As defined by Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy (2013), “Ego conflict is in which the original issue is ignored as partner attack each other’s self-esteem” (Pg. 225). On March of 2013, I had to miss about three weeks of school or so, due to an unfortunate event with my family. At the time, my best friend was carpooling to school with me. Since I am the type of person who keeps problems to herself, I sent my friend a brief text saying, ”Hey, I will not be able to give you a ride to school for the past month or so. I will be in and out, mostly out of school, for a while.” After, I sent the text; I never got a reply or text from her. For that period of time, I only came to school for about half an hour, once or twice a week...
