Running Head: HARDEE TRANSPORTATION

Hardee Transportation is a small truckload business, and it is currently faced with a problem that practically every company has; how to better serve its customers, and maintain a profitable return. It is essential that companies such as these evaluate their operations to ensure that it possesses the most efficient way to manage their assets. There is a great concern for these companies considering that the competition is out there, providing the same services at a lower cost, or accommodating their customer needs more fittingly. Hardee Transportation must take a look at their operations and come up with some plausible solutions to increase their revenue operations, mitigate non-revenue routines, and still effectively meet their customer needs. Jim O’Brien of Hardee Transportation must make some important changes rather quickly, or Hardee Transportation may lose one of its biggest customers. The company is currently working on a 96% operating ratio, which means that Jim does not have very much financial freedom to buy more tractors, hire more drivers, or open another terminal or warehouse. Jim will have to try to make crucial changes using the facility, drivers and equipment that he already oversees. There are several things that Jim can do that will help Hardee Transportation and their pickup and delivery operations that have been impacted by the recent change to the law that governs the driver’s hours. A critical change that could help Jim and the Hardee Transportation Company would be simply to cut out, or minimize the bobtailing patterns that they run routinely. Bobtailing requires drivers to operate the trailer with fewer tractors, whether it is to relocate them, or preposition them, it is a big part of the company’s problem considering that it is a non-revenue operation.
