Harassment Types of harassment (Quid Pro Quo & Hostile Environment) Harassment is defined by the dictionary as: To hostile or prejudicial remarks or actions; pressure or intimidate. Although some people consider this actions as physical, there are other types of aggressions. The following are physical or verbal examples that can happen in a workplace or elsewhere. Sexual Harassment: It can be present at any workplace, school or within the family and has a great impact on women. Although, men can suffer from it as well. In many countries it’s considered a delictive act and is penalized according to its gravity. There are two types of sex discrimination. Quid pro quo sexual harassment and Hostile environment sexual harassment. Quid Pro Quo (this for that) it happens when a job benefit is connected to an employee accepting undesired sexual actions. For example: A worker will receive a raise if he or she accepts a date with his or her boss. This harassment is unlawful if the victim resists and suffers the threatened harm or submits and thus avoids the threatened harm. Hostile environment sexual harassment is when an employee is victim of comment of a sexual nature, unwelcome physical contact or offensive materials as a part of the daily work environment. For example: Intimidation, abusive language, offensive jokes or comments based on the sex of the person, etc. Racial Harassment: Unwelcome behavior that happens to a person because of his or her race, such as verbal or physical conduct of a racial nature. Conduct based upon color or national origin

is analyzed under the law similar to race harassment, and also may violate the law. For example: Racially motivated actions and behavior include inappropriate questioning about racial or ethnic origin, offensive graffiti and intimidating behavior such as threatening gestures. Personal Harassment: Behavior that humiliates, intimidates, excludes, and isolates and individual or group. Examples based on lack of tolerance of personal difference include making fun of personal circumstances or appearance. Bullying: Undesired, aggressive behavior among school children. For example: Criticism, gossip, isolation that is intimidating. Harassment on Grounds of Sexual Orientation: Any behavior related to sexual orientation which creates an intimidating, hostile, offensive environment for employment, study or social life. Examples include homophobic remarks or jokes, threats to disclose sexuality and intimate questions about sexual activity. Harassment of Disabled People: This undermines the dignity of people with disabilities include discussion of the effects of a disability on an individual's personal life, unwanted touching or staring, and inappropriate questioning about the impact of someones disability. Age Harassment It includes derogatory age remarks and unjustifiable dismissal of suggestions depending on the age of the person. Stalking: Examples include leaving repeated or alarming messages on voicemail or e­mail, following people home, or approaching co­workers to ask for personal information. Penalties if found guilty of
Sexual harassment: Although the law doesn’t prohibit simple teasing, comments or incidents that

are not very serious, harassment is illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile

or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision. The penalties for the aggressor could be warning, transfer, salary reduction, suspension or termination, training or counseling, monitoring. Racial harassment: If someone is attacked they should report it to the police. Under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, harassment or assault may carry a higher penalty for the person who has attacked him or her if it has a racist motive.

Bullying: Depending on the state and applicable laws, sanctions could range anywhere from civil penalties, such as school intervention via suspensions and/or expulsions, to jail time for criminal misdemeanors and even felonies.

Harassment on grounds of sexual orientation, harassment of disabled people and age harassment:
Depending on the state and applicable laws as well sanctions could range anywhere from warnings to jail.

What to do if being harassed Even though there are more examples of harassment, these are the ones that are widely present in society. However, If someone is being harassed and one feels in danger, one can contact the police. If a person thinks he or she is being harassed because of their disability, race, religion, transgender identity or sexual orientation or bullied, they can report the harassment to the police, to an institution or someone with authority (school, work, parents, friends, teachers) as a hate incident or crime.
