Haughty Hally and His Servant Sam In Athol Fugard’s “Master Harold”…and the boys, the relationship between seventeen-year-old Hally, who is portrayed as the more privileged Caucasian male, and his family’s two middle-aged and uneducated black servants, revolves around an order of power that represents the racial segregation imprinted into the surrounding culture of Port Elizabeth in the 1980’s. In the beginning, the racial discrimination that Hally's dialogue exults, displays complete unawareness to the wrongs of his thoughts due to his segregated culture and ignorant family's beliefs. However, in the end, Hally uses the power that the culture naturally imposes on him to become "Master Harold". Sam, a character representing the less fortunate side of the racial segregation in the culture, expresses his hopes for a more peaceful "world without collisions", and hints at how the want for more equality between races in both opportunity and respect is not one only formed within him individually, but one among the masses. Hally, is a boy raised amongst a culture and family in which the Caucasian race is automatically granted large sums of power in comparison to the blacks in the culture. The acknowledged idea of the two opposite races lacking the acceptability to integrate on an equal level, is not only engraved into the culture presented in this script, but also etched into the dynamics of the individual character's minds with their power roles predetermined by their race and can make individuals like Hally, unaware of the faults of their racist thinking. Sam and Hally's relationship is not one of equal power, yet it is not demolished by the ideas of racial and wealth segregation to the point at which the two cannot execute an argumentative conversation.
