This four-‐page article outlines an example of the disruptive innovation that is occurring within the health industry. The focus is on a new technology that offers significant price reduction to existing lab testing technologies without sacrificing the quality of testing; additionally, it highlights the pricing transparency that is readily becoming available to consumers. This Business Insider piece highlights the impact innovative technology advances will have within the health industry. Theranos technology referenced within the article offers improved patient comfort for blood testing, leveraging a single drop of blood to run a battery of testing that would otherwise have required multiple tubes. In addition to comfort, a patient is now more likely to undergo testing as there is less fear with offering up a “drop” of blood versus multiple vials. This new technology will likely revolutionize the lab-‐testing sector of healthcare, an area that has seen little change in the past fifty years. Furthermore, it is another example of technology impacting the sector that leads to improved value to the patient customer by offering more information at lower pricing, and at the same time putting additional pressures on traditional hospital systems’ revenue streams that are generated through lab testing. There is reference to the massive billions of dollars in savings that CMS could realize if all of their members were to have testing done with this technology. Lastly, beyond the revenue impact, this technology illustrates the impact on delivery of care moving to more convenient, outpatient-‐based sites. In this example, Walgreens expands it presence as a healthcare delivery system and further creating disruption to the traditional doctor’s office/hospital delivery model. One would also believe that the convenience, ease of testing, and information gained from the testing, will further allow patients to be better informed and engaged in their health.

Variance Reporting

...A variance report is a way for business executives to gauge their company's performance by comparing one set of figures to another. This usually means comparing a planned amount to an actual amount. Companies use variance reports to analyze how close they've come to hitting the sales targets or to see if they've met their budgetary goals. A well-rounded budget variance report will address trends, overspending, and under spending. In the healthcare field variance reports are used in every department of the hospital. Each unit of patient care has a limit and goals that need to be met from the administrators’ position. The framework for cost control is following two approaches is possible: preventive and detection-correction. ( ) On the Intensive Care Unit we are given a strict budget and we over this month. We have to explain why it has been over budget. The Intensive Care unit is an area with very heavy workload and requires a two to one ratio for the care of the patients. With the budget and the twenty five bed floor we are allowed thirteen nurses a shift for the care. In our staff we have eighty-one employees staffed on our roster. With this being said we have many days when or staff is in overtime, which hurts our budget each month. On our unit we get some patients who then turn to one on one patient and at that point we are paying extra for them to be on staff. Changes in our census are another thing we work on as a floor, and try to manage at full census to allow us the...

Variance Analysis

...Leslie M. Rogakis HCA 240-0500 03/29/2015 Professor Tirizia York Variance Analysis A variable department manager has many factors to consider when interpreting and analyzing a variance report. Variances can be attributed to factors such as increased or decreased volume, wage increases, cost increases for equipment and cost increases for supplies. Variance reports are a tool that can be utilized to analyze how well a company is doing with meeting current budgetary goals as well as a means for forecasting information for future budgets. In preparing a variance analysis report to be presented to the vice president, the information needs to be simple enough to understand easily, but detailed enough for the information to be useful to the person reading the report. To ensure a well-rounded variance report it should include information such as budgeted values, the actual values for the specific term as well as the overall variance. This paper will explain the relationships between variance reporting, interpreting or analyzing variance report results, and actual results of performance. A variance report is a valuable tool used to analyze a company’s or a specific department’s performance in a given period. When variances in wages occur, there are several factors that could have contributed to that variance. Such factors include higher than expected patients admittance, longer than average patient days and possibly wage increases awarded to staff. An additional factor could...

...jumping from account to account. At first Mr. Malone did not see a reason to purse an investigation, but Mrs. Cooper decided that there was further investigation needed. Mrs. Cooper looked into the report and realized that something was wrong with the reports and confronted Mr. Bobbitt about the findings. Mr. Bobbitt in the audit committee would take a look and see if the findings that Mrs. Cooper were valid. After finding that the findings were valid she then contact Mr. Farrell and he did an external investigation. After further investigation that the mid-level accounting directors Mr. Normand had confessed to just going along with what Mr. Sullivan had explained to him about the reports because he was afraid to tell anyone and wanted to resign. He was afraid that if he told anyone that he would lose his job and had a family to support. When looking at WorldCom situation it was good that the internal auditor committee took charge of the situation when it was brought to them. That was very ethical and then to have the external auditors take over to review the matter was the right step. Now the fact that you had an accountant that your CFO making false reports and switching money around is not very ethical. Not only did your CFO bring another person into the fraudulent reports, but now an external investigation has to be done and reported. There will be hefty fines and jail time for people in the company that went along with unethical behavior. The accounting activity was...

Manhunt

...posted a manifesto on his social network page and on February 3, 2013 it all began! His first 2 victims had been shot and killed and there were more deaths to follow. Dorner was after any and all law enforcement and anyone involved with them and LAPD had no idea what else was in store. The manhunt lasted for a little over a week and authorities had no idea where he was or what his next move could have been. Somehow, they caught up with him finally and it all ended with a cabin on fire and Dorner allegedly dead. ABC 7 was not subjective, they reported the information they had, and the reporters did not seem to make subjective comments in the first report. Some information I found odd to be reported was the preschool Dorner attended. Has the reports continued, it started to seem like all the stations were being subjective in their reports. Fox 11 news was the most subjective; the reporters shared how terrible they thought the events were and hoped for Dorner’s capture. In both stations the information that was omitted or never spoken of in detail was how good of a person everyone knew Christopher Dorner as. There were people who wanted to share their experiences with him and who have known him for years and never thought of him as a killer, but apparently none of that mattered at this point. NBC 4 was the most objective, there were no opinions, and they reported the information they had. All news stations seemed to omit any good information on the suspect, but at that point they were...
