The short movie Henry's Daughters show cased a scenario in which many ethical issues were created by a project in an everyday working environment. Examples of ethical issues can be seen throughout the movie as listed from importance of most critical to least critical. 1. The discussion made by the committee was not based on the quality of the project presented by the competition, but instead solely based on the favors and political factors that were occurring while the project was in placed. 2. Infringement of privacy was placed into consideration by certain party members, which was not brought to light by the committee members in charge of conducting the project. This creates an ethical issue since it was an sign of intentional misusage of the application created for the project. 3. There was knowledge about the project passed from Laura to Julie that was supposed to be confidential, creating an unfair advantage in Julie's favors. Sharing intellectual property about the development of other competitors work is considered a major violation in many corporations and can lead to heavy losses from the competing company. 4. All three of the family members being involved in the same project poses a ethical issue, potentially creating a path for many illegal activities. 5. Henry relied solely on his connections and influences to persuade the decisions made by the committee involved in handling the contest. This pushes out any chances of an actual competition to take place during the contest, since the winner of the competition was already decided from the start. 6. Julie was facing sexual harassment from her co-worker, along with some "ogling" done by members of the decision

The Mother of the Child in Question Essay

...The Mother of the Child in Question, written by Doris Lessing, is a short story from 1988. The story is about a social worker, named Stephen Bentley, and his attempt to persuade a Pakistani family to send their youngest daughter to a special school because she is mentally retarded. The family in question is the Khans, an immigrant family consisting of Mr. & Mrs. Khan, their son Hassan, their daughter Shireen and two older daughters whom we do not hear anything specific about in the story. Mrs. Khan, the mother, will not realize that her daughter is not a normal girl, so she does everything she can to convince the social worker, Stephen Bentley, that there is nothing wrong with her daughter. The family lives in a very poorly milieu in England. It is described as a lowly ranked social area where the hallways for example are described as urine smelling. The buildings are described as poor block buildings with many apartments where everything is grey concrete. Generally, these milieus take place in ghettos. Even though the family lives in a poor place, they still keep it clean and presentable with cramped furniture. Steven Bentley, the social worker, is the main character in the story. The story is told through his eyes, thoughts and observations. He has been assigned the case of the Khan family, and has made preparations by phoning Mr. Khan the day before he shows up. As mentioned earlier, he wants to get Shireen into a special school for mentally retarded children. Hassan...

She chooses this lifestyle and has lives with the downfalls of the choices she made. In this case, she is dealing with the downfall of working very hard and not having much of a personal life. This suggests the fact that a woman has to choose from a bunch of choices. 2. Into which Women’s Film category (Molly Haskell's four categories) would you place Mildred Pierce? Why? (Use the Woman's Film Lecture notes for this question).  Molly Haskell discusses four categories in Women’s Film- sacrifice, affliction, choice, and competition. Mildred Peirce would definitely be considered in the sacrifice category, because the whole movie is about Mildred making sacrifices to satisfy her daughter Velds needs and wants. This was shown right in the beginning when Bert left Mildred because she cared more for her daughters then him. After having...

Everyday Use

..."Everyday Use” - Literary Analysis Alice walker writes about the importance of inheriting family heritage and how it passes on to generations. This story is based on conflicts of two generations; on the bonds of a mother and daughter and their legacy which is symbolized as two hand stitched quilts. The narrator, Mama introduces us to her two daughters who have conflicting minds. Mama is disappointed on the behavior and the tension that takes place when Dee forces her to make a difficult decision about who gets the quilts. The story unfolds when Mama’s eldest daughter Dee, returns home for the first time after finishing college and starts claiming for possessions. The younger Maggie has never left home and is shown to be of quiet character, who was severely burned in a house fire when she was a child due to which her sympathetic and generous nature is over shadowed by her ugly scarred face. Dee, being stylish and blessed with good looks is the centre of agitation between the family and invokes jealously. Her feet appear "as if God himself had shaped them with a certain style." (385). Around Dee, the younger sister is a coward and since the fire she walks with "chin on her chest, eyes on the ground." (384) . The narrator is protective around her daughters hoping that Maggie becomes self confident and stands up for her right. The narrator fantasizes about reuniting with Dee on a television talk show and day dreams about Dee expressing gratitude to Mama acknowledging what all Mama...

How to Be a Good Son or Daughter

...people are good sons or daughters even though their parents are bad. A good son or daughter should have certain qualities. Being hard working, sympathetic, and respectful of parents are the most important qualities of a good son or daughter. First of all, a good son or daughter should be a hard working person. A good child usually makes parents happy, and parents are happy when their children do what they are supposed to do. For example, if a child is a student, she is supposed to study hard. If she studies hard, whether she gets good grade or not, her parents are pleased with her. In addition, in Vietnam we value children as good sons or daughters when they do not make their parents worry about them. For instance, a boy after graduation from a university got a job and worked hard. Although he did not get a good—paying job, he earned enough to take care of himself. That boy is a good son because he is self—reliant and his parents don’t have to worry about him. Being hard working has remained the same over time in my culture. Additionally, to be sympathetic is one of the most important qualities of a good child. Parents who have to work hard to feed their children are usually tired after a long day. As a result, they sometimes get angry easily and may overreact with their children very small mistakes. If their children were sympathetic, they would understand and would not hate or think that parents don’t love them. Moreover, if sons or daughters understand their parents’...

...which he gave her a relatively small cash buyout for those. Included assets retained by the ex-husband were the house for which they owned together for 17 years (valued around $220,000), a vehicle (valued around $6,000), and a mutual life insurance policy. The value that the client was given for her share of those assets has been mostly used up to cover the deficit she has been working at for the last three years since the divorce. The client currently has one daughter in college, for which she is assisting in paying off her student loan of ______ from last year, and hopes to continue to assist with a small amount of money given each month to her. Additionally, she has another daughter who will be beginning college in the Fall of 2016 for which she hopes to assist similarly. This is a major goal for my client, so something more personal plans that require financial assistance are put on hold until her daughters are through college. A major focus she has is to try to get through these next five years (get daughters through school, and finalize divorce situation, recover from those debts) and after those five years, begin to plan more for retirement, potentially go back to school, and maybe even purchase a small house. I have used nominal values for the 2035 budget/expense calculations. Her cash flow is projected to be slightly negative for the next couple years (working on getting court sanctions to have ex-husband help pay some items off) and until those get figured out...

Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior

...for how the essay is going to be. From the start we get the hint that this text will try to convince us, that Chinese parenting methods are superior. Amy Chua begins something that she claims is on a lot of people’s minds. The wonders about how Chinese parents are able to raise such successful kids. She then continues to saying that she can give the answer to these wonders, because she has done it herself. Amy Chua gives us a list of things that her daughters, were never allowed to do. This list seems, to us, unusual and maybe even mad. But to her, this is a necessity in her way of parenting. To her this is logical and is what must be done to get successful kids. In her list we see that not only are her children not allowed to get any grade less than A, but also they have to be the No. 1 student in every subject, except gym and drama. This put a really huge amount of pressure on her daughters. Amy Chua is an American lawyer, writer and legal scholar. She is the Professor of Law at Yale Law School. Amy Chua has two daughters Sophia and Louisa. The fact that she is a mother herself, gives her self-experience and makes her more credible. On this topic she is an authority, because she is a professor at Yale. This enhances her ethos, and gives her a lot of knowledge on the topic. The readers would at first glance be parents, or couples thinking about having a baby. But her views on the subject are so distinct from the typical western...

...Gabriella Boix Español 203 Mss. Gubuny The movie, La Historia Oficial successfully demonstrates the result of the dictatorship that lasted from 1973-1986. The movie was based off the life of a school teacher named Alicia, who has an illegally adopted child. Throughout the movie Alicia puts together the pieces that leads her to determine that her daughter is in fact a kidnapped child. I believe it was right of Alicia to look into the past of her child, to determine where she came from. I also believe that Roberto is to blame for multiple occurrences in the movie. The main one being the illegal adoption of his daughter Gaby, but Alicia’s friend Ana returns from exile and confronts Roberto about his involvement in her arrest. Even Roberto’s father and brother call him out on the injustice of his practice. It would be difficult to know what I would do in that situation, but if I were Alicia I would try to do the right thing and keep in contact with Gaby’s abuelita. I do believe that Roberto had to do with the illegal adoption. What confuses me is why Alicia waited until her daughters fifth birthday to question where she came from. She should have wondered these things initially. She didn’t question how her husband got a baby with no questions asked, it seems to me like it would have been fishy from the very beginning. This movie was interesting because it didn’t show the side of the victim. Instead it focused on the lives of a family that was built on the forced separation...

Interpersonal Communication

...Interpersonal conversation 1 Recently I had a conversation with my ex-wife about our daughter via the telephone. I had found out that my daughter who is 14 and lives with my ex-wife in Rhode Island had gone out on a date with a 16 year old boy. I found this out on her facebook page. I was unhappy that she would let our daughter do this and that I had to find out this way. I called her and instantly you could tell from the tone of my voice that I was unhappy and I am sure she sensed it right away. I told her that I feel I have no say in my daughters life and how unsafe I thought the situation was. I was a 16 year old boy and I know first hand how many boys that age can be and this is my daughter we are talking about her safety is all that matters to me. However, my ex disagreed with this saying that I did not know the situation or the boy and that I was questioning her judgment. Needless to say we both said some words that were not kind to each other. Communicating with her through the phone is hard I don’t think she can see the concern in my face. She is only hearing the anger in my tone. I want them both to know that I care about my daughter a great deal and maybe they could allow me to have some say in how she is being raised even if they live in Rhode Island. It is a difficult situation for sure and one that I don’t know will ever be better unless I move closer to them. This is a hard task right now as I have had some health issues and also help to take care...

Infant Infanticide

...originate in Asia but were in fact prevalent in Ancient Greece and Rome as long ago as 200 BC. There were six thousand families living in one city of Greece and only one percent of them had more than one daughter. Centuries later, demographic data from India shows that during the British rule, there were about six boys for every girl and in some villages there were not any girls at all. While most people in the modern world believe infanticide and son preference is a non-issue because it has declined, the fact remains that these issues are actually on the rise due to advances in technology, the economy, and a preference for small families which in turn leads to preferring a son over a daughter. Statistical data shows that the number of girls killed in infanticide is more than the number of men killed in all of the wars of the twentieth century (Manne, 2010). That number is staggering and astronomical enough to prove to naysayers that infanticide is in fact an issue that needs to be solved because it has consequences on the overall dynamics of family, society, and a country and not only effects the present but also the future. It is first necessary to understand the factors that cause infanticide and son preference to be so prevalent in Eastern cultures. Preferring a son to a daughter is mostly due to economic, cultural, social, and religious factors. Sons are considered more valuable because they...
