Density, Buoyancy, and Force Diagrams PhET Lab (rvsd 2/2011)
Introduction
You’ve heard that oil floats on water. You also know that ice cubes normally float in a glass of water. Why? What causes some things to float in water (corks, ice, dogs) and some to sink in water (rocks, metal spoons, mobsters)? Density is often described as the amount of mass crammed into a volume, and is illustrated by the formula shown below. The units for density are expressed g/cm3, g/mL, kg/m3, and kg/L. In this simulation, we will use kg/L. Water’s density is 1.00 kg/L.

Important Formulas:

Procedure: PhET Simulations Play With Sims Physics Density * Take a few minutes and familiarize yourself with the simulation before moving on.

Free Body Diagrams for Floating Objects: * Grab the various blocks, lift them over the water and drop into the water a few times. * In the boxes at the right, draw free body diagrams for a falling block, block under water, and a floating wood block. * When is the block accelerating? ________________&________________________ * What should be the net force in the vertical direction when the block is floating? _____

The %-Density Ratio Trick *
% under = _____________
Estimate the percentage of the wood, ice, and Styrofoam block that is under water while those blocks are floating. Remember: the density of water is 1.00 kg/L % Wood under water | % Ice under water | % Styrofoam under water | | | | Density of Wood | Density of Ice | Density of Styrofoam | | | |

* Compare your estimations to the densities shown on the chart. Place those densities in the chart above. * Create a formula to show how much of a floating object would be submerged in any fluid.

The Rise of Hentai in America

...The Rise of Hentai in America, Part 1 Posted on August 8, 2012August 15, 2012 by CarrieLynn D. Reinhard (This paper, and the accompanying presentation I’m not bad, I’m just drawn that way, were done in 2006 for a women’s studies course at Ohio State University. Some of the facts may be a bit outdated, some have been updated, but I still stand by the interpretation of the texts. And, warning, this posting will include illustrated examples of pornographic cartoons, so it is definitely rated NSFW. Part 1 here discusses the subject matter; Part 2 compares hentai to live action pornography; Part 3 considers the ramifications of hentai.) Created by a fan, and named “Jessica Rabbit Naughty Pin-up”. When Jessica Rabbit, the animated femme fatale of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? uttered the line “I’m not bad, I’m just drawn that way,” I sincerely doubt her creators knew that a decade later she would be made into an online porn star. Now, alongside other American and Japanese cartoon women, she has entire websites devoted to her. Is Jessica being objectified, degraded, and having her rights taken away? Logically, no, because Jessica is merely ink-and-paint, a figment of someone’s imagination brought to life only by the mechanical and visual trickery of animation. As she said, it’s not her fault she was drawn to represent a stereotypical male conception of an idealized woman. Why should we care if people have changed her from a children’s animated figure into an adult porn star? The...

Creative Writing: Drowning

...Within moments the room filled with the ringing of the other phone in the room. Your mother answers the phone and switches it over to speakerphone. The voice of your family friend fills the room, “Who’s writing this filth?” Your mom fills her in on the spelling error and that it is a conversation between her daughter—you—and a boy from school. She calls out to you, “Who’s flirting with you?” Irritation fills you, the nagging of these immature adults is already wearing on you. “He’s not flirting, that’s how he would respond to anyone,” you explain, “He’s in my phone as Hentai-kun for a reason.” “That’s flirting,” the two of them insist. You continue to fight off your younger brother, who had been vying for the privilege of also stealing you phone since its return. Rolling your eyes, you turn and snarled that if he doesn’t let up you’ll stab him with the phone. “Owden, don’t steal your sister’s phone,” she half-heartedly scolds. “You should teach by example,” intoned the two children, well acquainted with the hypocrisy of parents. She rolls her eyes at the two of you. You bring your food to the table and set it down, eating in the silence that you knew wouldn’t last after others arrive...

Therefore, we end up watching anime on my own feeling something like a social outcast. Socially we am busy being as we am out of college, in a very exhausting job, trying to find time to date, into sports, looking into grad school, etc. we know there are others out there thinking the same thing. My Attitude Towards Writing

...Title: My Attitude Towards Writing By: Richard Bill Magee Date: 03/ 31/2010 My attitude towards writing is both positive and negative. I enjoy writing for many positive reasons. One reason is being able to effectively communicate with disabled people. Werther someone is death or blind using braille writing is a way we all can communicate with each other. Another positive reason is using free writing which is a good way to relax your mind. Writing gives you a outlet on paper when you don't have someone to speak with. Writing essays can be used to learn more about ones self. When you apply to a university or company you get a chance to write and show your abilities and what you can contribute to. Writing your answers essay form will let you state your case more fully than other sections of an application. It can provide the evaluator with better insight about you and how you differ from other applicants. What I like most about writing is that it is another good way to communicate. Negatively speaking on writing I have a hard time writing essays. I try to hard to remember what I have read about a topic. My essays usually end up sounding cliché from what I have read. I have a hard time putting what I have read into my own words. It's my good idea to read my essay's out loud when I'm done with it. I try to pick up some pattern or neat idea that i hadn't noticed hoping to change my cliché words around. Other times if I don't like the topic I end up losing focus and going off...

...The history of anime began at the start of the 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers experimented with the animation techniques that were being explored in the West. During the 1970s, anime developed further, separating itself from its Western roots, and developing distinct genres such asmecha and its Super Robot sub-genre. Typical shows from this period include Lupin III and Mazinger Z. During this period several filmmakers became famous, especially Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii. In the 1980s, anime was accepted in the mainstream in Japan, and experienced a boom in production. The rise of Gundam, Macross, Dragon Ball, and the Real Robot and space opera genres set a boom as well. The film Akira set records in 1988 for the production costs of an anime film and went on to become a success worldwide. Later, in 2004, the same creators produced Steamboy, which took over as the most expensive anime film. The Super Dimension Fortress Macross also became a worldwide success after being adapted as part of Robotech, and Megazone 23 also gained recognition in the West after it was adapted as Robotech: The Movie.[citation needed] The internet also led to the rise of fansub anime. Spirited Away shared the first prize at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival and won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, while Innocence: Ghost in the Shell was featured at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. ...Anime (Japanese: アニメ?, [anime] ( listen); English i/ˈænɨmeɪ/) are Japanese animated productions usually featuring hand-drawn or computer animation. The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese, where this term references all animation;[1] the term may ultimately derive from the French dessin animé, referring to an animated picture.[2] In other languages, the term is defined as animation from Japan or as a Japanese-disseminated animation style. Arguably, the stylization approach to the meaning may open up the possibility of anime produced in countries other than Japan.[3][4][5] For simplicity, many Westerners strictly view anime as an animation product from Japan.[6] The earliest commercial Japanese animation dates to 1917, and production of anime works in Japan has since continued to increase steadily. The characteristic anime art style emerged in the 1960s with the works of Osamu Tezuka and spread internationally in the late twentieth century, developing a large domestic and international audience. Anime is distributed theatrically, by television broadcasts, directly to home media, and over the internet and is classified into numerous genres targeting diverse broad and niche audiences. Anime is a diverse art form with distinctive production methods and techniques that have been adapted over time in response to emergent technologies. The production of anime focuses less on the animation of movement and more on the realism of settings as well as the use...

Pornography in Media

...Pornography’s Effect on Sexual Crime Rates Overview: Our Research Topic Be it in film, magazines or even fiction, pornography has always been a controversial topic. It is many things to many people: a guilty pleasure, a shameful addiction, a stress relief, foreplay, an obscene creation or even a vulgar pastime. However, as time passes, pornography is becoming decreasingly taboo, and this could result in a significant impact on societal values and perceptions. Introduction: Questions and Objectives Long has there been war between those who are for pornography and those against it. Is pornography harmful or harmless? Just what are the effects of pornography on society? Is it just simply a harmless way to release pent-up lust or does it play a big role in shaping society? Could minutes of watching pornography a day affect society in a big way - say for instance, the rates of sexual crimes like rape, molest and sexual harassment? In this essay, we will attempt to prove that there is a strong and direct correlation between pornography and sexual crimes by critically examining the arguments provided before we draw a conclusion. Our hypothesis is that, indeed, increased pornography viewer-ship will cause a rise in sexual crimes. This is an easy conclusion to draw, as one would expect those who frequent pornography to be more sexually imaginative, active and accepting as compared to people who would normally not watch pornography. We are tackling...

...Chapter 1: The Death Note I stared at the teacher who was currently blabbering stuff about algebra and irrational numbers. I don't really have anything against Math, except that I have low grades in it. The only subject I'm ever good at is Physical Education. Even so, I am still beaten at it by the ever so perfect “Allen Walker”. What's with him, really? He's good at everything, even in Cooking Class. Although he can't par with me in cooking commoner's food, he always cooks exquisite viands. People adore him to the very core of Earth. He's like some Buddha in school. He's like the Super Star that never existed. Anyway, I feel that it won't be good if I fill the whole first paragraph of the first chapter with every crap about him. Let’s go to me first. My name is”Haruka Azumi Yukihara”. I am a most typical female student of Hakuo Academy. My forte is Physical Education and my Achilles' heel is just about anything except Physical Education. Yes, I know that's a lot that's why I'm not enumerating it. Today is June 13, 2011 and everything is just about how everything shouldn't be. Ah, of course it's the fault of mankind, as always. At least it's not the fault of Allen-kun. Either way, I'm stuck in this school and an addiction to Death Note. Now what is Death Note? It's a story about this cool guy who kills all criminals with a pen and a notebook. Now don't go imagining him hitting the criminals with the notebook and finishes it off by piercing the pen to the criminal's throat...
