Hermès is and has always been a family company and has always been led by the Hermès family. It was created by Thierry Hermès in 1837 as a harness workshop in Paris. The good quality of its products permitted to the company to win several awards and to be launched.
Since he is the creator of the company, the man this couldn't have happened without, and with the fact that the business is still owned by the family, it is obvious that Thierry Hermès is one of the heroes of the organization. After him, that is his son, Charles-Henry Hermès, who took over the management of the company. He moved the shop to the location it still has today (24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré) and with the help of his two sons, his national renown, and France's influence at this time, he sold his products (harnesses and saddles) to the elite of Europe. However, the company really expanded during the time when it was led by Charles-Henry Hermès sons, Adolphe and Emile-Maurice Hermès. If Adolphe stayed rather discreet, Emile-Maurice took the company to an other level. He achieved to get the exclusive use of the zipper for leather goods and started to produce clothes, even some unique pieces such as a golf jacket exclusively made for the Prince of Wales. He launched new product lines (clothes, handbags, scarves, jewelry, ties, perfumes, watches) and established the presence of the company in the United States. With one of his sons in law, Robert Dumas, he created one of the most iconic product of the company, the « Sac à dépêches », that became few years later the « Kelly bag ».
Charles-Henry Hermès was a great leader who successfully developed the company and imposed his philosophy. There is no doubt that he is also considered as a hero in the organization. Then succeeded Robert Dumas-Hermès, who adopted the duc-carriage-with-horse logo and officialized the name of « Kelly bag » for the « Sac à dépêches ». Though, the company began to fall in the 1970's. The son of Robert Dumas-Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas, who became chairman in 1978, came with a new strategy. He gives priorities to the sense of the loyalty, the requirement of the quality and the will to innovate. He has an expansionist policy and he goes after the conquest of Asia. Finally he concentrated the firm on silk and leather goods and ready-to-wear. Thanks to him the company will grow exponentially and from 1978 to 1990 the sales will grow from $50 million to $460 million.
Jean-Louis Dumas is the man who brought the company to the place it has today. He is present in the memory of the company because he managed it until 2006. He is naturally a hero of the organization.
