Race and Ethnicity Response to “Race Deserves More Attention” In this day and age it is extremely mind boggling and upsetting to hear that there are people in the world who believe race is getting more attention that it deserves. Anyone who believes this statement is also the reason why the news is consisting of so much “race” in the first place, because there are still prejudice views and racism. Although black people were enslaves, segregated, and terribly mistreated, there are still people who believe that anti-white racism is just as big, if not a bigger, problem. There are many problems that still exist in our culture that prove that not only is there still racism but black people continue to suffer unfair outcomes, There is a great gap between the net worth average of a black household verse a white in the United States. The gap has worsened, as a matter of fact is 40 percent worse today than it was in 1967. The average black household net worth is over $100,000 less than the average white household. Life expectancy for a black boy is shorter than that of a white boy, and moreover a black persons life has less potential than that of a white person. Black students are three times more likely to be expelled, and are likely to participate in higher mathematics or sciences. This list of problem goes beyond the duties of a specific race, but towards our nation. The United States is responsible for the everlasting segregation and the obstacles races of minority are going through. Racism has become a vicious cycle. How are we supposed to implement education in neighborhoods with “broken” schools? It is so difficult to try and fix a problem that has existed in so many previous generations, that people tend to lose hope. A step in the right direction would be for white people to recognize, not only does the white race have the upper hand, but also

...Budgeting committees at the federal government level have the difficult task of “allocating scarce resources among competing purposes” (Joyce, 2003, p 6).   Furthermore, the lack of both evaluation process and information on the performance of agencies causes the making of such decisions to be difficult.   This is due partly by the absence of measurements to evaluate agency dollars and performance when agencies present their budgetary budget proposal with traditional budgetary process.   Both performance-enhanced budgeting and performance-information budgeting can greatly improve the budgetary process because agencies will have information to not only evaluate their programs, but will also be beneficial to both governmental agencies and the general public because budgets that will benefit the tax payer will be better funded. Traditional Budgeting vs. Performance-Enhanced Budgeting Traditional budgeting at the federal level has had aspects of both top-down and bottom-up procedures.   Rubin (2010, p 87) states that an extreme top-down budgeting can “virtually ignore bureau chiefs…the chief executive may not ask bureau chiefs for their budget request.”   However, with the fragmentation of power caused by the 1974 Congressional Budget Reform Act, which “limited some of the president’s budgetary discretion and enhanced Congress’s ability to check executive branch revenue projections and economic assumptions” both the President and Congress have to work together to approve budgets...

... he has to be thankful that he has a job, that he has an income and the fact that him and his family can live an exclusive life not many from his tribe can. Mr. Ugwu seems to be a man who always has worked hard for his money, but it also seems that he is a man who is privileged in many ways. Mr. Ugwu has a gardener that takes care of his wife’s flowers, and a houseboy that does several tasks in the house such as cooking him breakfast. “The kitchen boy has made him hot sweet tea and sliced bread” …”His master’s breakfast” – This quote says a lot about how the social structure is in Nigeria, there is a clear hierarchy which makes it irrelevant whether you are a Hausa, or an Igbo. However his wife still tries to remind him several times in an attempt to convince him, that he is worth more than what the white people think of him. “You are a well-qualified accountant, she reminded him.” One of the main problems throughout the text seems to be the fact that the white people, that Mr. Ugwu is working for, are taking him, and in general the black people and their labour, for granted. The white people are the powerful ones, which take care of...

...Intro The name Muhammad Ali is known throughout the world , and to many people he is referred to as a hero. Certain events in Muhammad's life made him into a respectable and generous person. By examining the life, contributions to the world, and how he will continue to inspire the next generation, I will prove that Muhammad Ali is an important figure. Life Boxer, philianthropist, and social activist Muhammad Ali was born as Cassius Clay on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. Being the first son, he was named after his father, Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr. His father painted signs and his mother Odessa Grady Clay worked as a cleaning lady, whenever they struggled with money. Considered one of the greatest athletes in boxing history, Ali showed his bravery at an early age. Growing up in the segregated south, Ali discovered and experienced racial prejudice firsthand, which likely lead to his early passion for boxing. (The making of an icon, page 7) When 12 year old Muhammad Ali went to a merchandise fair with his friend in his hometown, Louisville, they returned to get their bicycles only to discover that Muhammad's bike had been stolen. Furious, Ali reported the crime to the Columbia Auditorium. He spoke to the nearest policeman Joe Martin, who was also a boxing coach at the Columbia gym. Ali threatened to beat the victim up, but Martin suggested that he should probably learn to fight first. Ali started working with Martin to learn how to box, and soon began...

Hey You Speak

...You speak good English by June Hamid. In the past, during my years spent living and studying overseas in Australia and in the United Kingdom, I was often informed or presented with this matter of fact statement. At that point, I didn’t really know how to respond, especially when surrounded by native speakers. It is often difficult to explain something that was indeed very natural to me. But now, as I do then, I find pride in being able to converse and express myself fluently in this language of the world. And now with confidence, when the same statement is said, I respond with a ‘And so do you!’ which is not without the accompaniment of a quizzical look, as if to not find this funny at all. The English language can only be explained as being all pervasive; its tentacles of speech, writing, and readings present throughout the world. This undeniably impacts all, especially those who find a passion for all things English, like moi’. So then, speaking English becomes a natural thing which transcends borders and cultures. So, you may ask, how does one speak good English, in order to be able to respond the very same answer as above, very confidently? The answer is to simply – READ. I am not of the MTV generation where, if one was schooled on a diet of vivid images peppered with American stories and drawls, you would often have an Americanized accent and some sort of repository of ideas. But I’d like to think that since English belongs to us all, that the accent is far less discernible...

...Jessica Lipchak Dr. Raeff Developmental Psychology 02 November 2012 HOW Did Maureen Develop Differently from Her Siblings? The Glass Castle is a captivating and heart wrenching memoir about the upbringing of a poor and highly dysfunctional family. The author, Jeannette Walls, entertains her readers by sharing the childhood memories of struggle her and her three siblings faced while being raised by their irresponsible and unreliable parents. Towards the end of the book, Jeannette and her siblings decide to move out of Welch, a depressive and poverty stricken town in West Virginia, to start lives for themselves in the city of New York. It is there where they all succeed on paths of their own, except for the youngest child, Maureen, who ends up being sent to rehab after stabbing her mother over an argument. Maureen’s developmental differences can be determined by analyzing and comparing cultural, social, and individual factors between her and her siblings. Culturally speaking, people are influenced all the time. From the rules people follow to the morals they live by, typical patterns of behavior reflect beliefs and values. No two cultures are the same. Therefore, people raised in different areas tend to experience different economic factors and demographic issues which influence opinions on values. In Maureen’s case, most of her childhood was spent in Welsh, where life was very hard for her family. Due to the fact their house was in shackles and garbage littered their front...

Lamb To The Slaughter And Hey You Down There Short Story

...In both Japanese and English, there is a word which means “a domineering husband”. A wife of such a husband is often depicted as an obedient stay-at-home wife always showing her gratitude to her husband for working for his family. In Lamb to the Slaughter and Hey You Down There!, two main characters appear to be this kind of wives, but the stories reveal their hidden feelings. Though Mary Maloney and Dora Spender’s attitudes toward their husbands seem similar, how they actually think of / feel about their husbands are quite different. Respecting first impressions of Mary and Dora, both of them are typical full-time housewives who think their bosses are their husbands. Firstly, neither of them complains about their husbands’ behaviors. In Lamb...
