“The thirst for knowledge increases with the acquisition of it” – Thomas Carlyle

During my early high school days,I was baffled and daunted to choose physics as one of my main subject, since I came to an irrelevant conclusion that the subject is subtle and the concepts are hard to grasp. Thanks to an amazing high school teacher who explicated the subject and its importance in our daily life to me.He was the one who made me lead the team to perform a physics experiment,as later on,asked to explain the experiment to my fellow mates. The results amazed me and increased my fascination towards the other experiments of the subject.Upon then,i discovered my latent talent in physics and capitalized on it to make it my forte and it remains so till date.As an immediate consequence,i took up Electronics as my major and joined the Diploma course after my 10+2 since “complete learning can be achieved only by coupling conceptual theory with practical knowledge”,is what I believe in.

Subjects like Electronic Devices and Circuits, Control Systems and Electrical Machines gave me an exposure to the fundamentals and applications of Electrical Engineering. Some of the laboratory sessions I enjoyed the most were in Analog electronics, Digital Electronics, Power Electronics.Computed Aided Design of electrical machines gave me a practical glance of how the real world electronics is.I was always wondering how such tiny IC’s could have such immense potential. Much later, when I came across the fact that even the highly complicated robots and other automations worked mainly on such IC’s, built into circuitry that made them Microprocessors and Microcontrollers,my fascination towards them increased. Also the problem-solving aspect of making electronic gadgets was truly enjoyable.

In the wake of the digital revolution that is sweeping the world, I want to be present where the technology is redefined everyday and want to pursue my ambition of being a part of this exciting, grand odyssey of making technology available at hand and decided that VLSI would be the career for me and chose VLSI as my domain in the final year of Diploma.A common test was conducted among the students who were interested in taking up vlsi as their major in the final year, but as VLSI is quiet challenging, only the top 30 were taken out of the 250 who attended the actual test. And I am proud to say that I stood in the top 5 among the 30 selected students.

Other than just following up with the syllabus,I always pushed myself for an extra mile, and succeeded in over-compensating my professors, which later served as a forerunner for my decision of taking up VLSI as my domain. Having gained the knowledge of the fundamentals in VLSI and the usage of some simulation tools during the course, and my thorough hardwork in the problem solving aspects of the subject helped me gaining a job in ‘CYPRESS SEMICONDUCTORS’,a US based company,as a ‘LAYOUT DESIGN ENGINEER’.And there I was trained on different CAD tools like CADENCE, VIRTUOSO, Mentor Graphics CALIBER etc.And also gained a full knowledge on the concepts of UNIX,

Floor planning, Signal Integrity/ Cross Talk Analysis, IR drop Analysis, Electromigration, Clock Tree synthesis, Fabricaion process etc. With a strong foundation with these topics and after gaining a hands on the tools I mentioned.i was involved in one of the major Image sensor project for the company ‘ARRI’, which is a film style digital Camera.

However during the training, I managed to turn negative events into positive learning experiences and never made the same mistake twice which helped me to own a complete column block to design the layout in the main project( the column block is a critical one in the entire design since it has space constraint). It’s a great challenge for a fresher and I enjoyed it a lot. The pitch allocated for the column block is 8.25um and for the future project, the pitch was 6.1um, but I took an initiative on my interest and designed the pitch using the parameterized cell type of layout in such a way that it can be used for both the present project(8.25um pitch) and the future project(6.1um pitch) and that which helped the group save 360 man working hours for which I have been rewarded. I have also written a memo on how to calculate and clean the Antenna Errors on poly gates of the transistor which has been published to all the Layout groups in the company. Working on full chip verifications like DRC(Design Rule Check), LVS, Soft, Stress, Antenna, DFM etc helped me in building a good knowledge of methodology and experience with EDA tool flow. And later on I worked for 90nm,130nm and 180nm projects.

Since I felt that I need to have broader theoretical knowledge on other electronics subjects I decided to persue B-tech after my 10+2 and 3 years Diploma course. And there, subjects like Power electronics and device, Microprocessors, Electrical measurements, Digital Signal processing,Semiconductor devices, VLSI technology, RF and Microwave engineering helped me to understand intrinsic concept of the subjects.

But my desire to work on cutting edge technologies lead me to join ‘INTEL’,which is again a US based company where I am working on 32nm,22nm and 18nm projects. Since ‘INTEL’ has their own set of CAD tools I was trained on GENESYS, HERCULES, PARADE, VIRTUOSO SCHEMATIC EDITOR. I am proud to say that I am member of the team which delivered the first 32nm microprocessor chip and working on 22nm and 18nm microprocessor chips with high efficiency, computing and low power graphics core in the world. During these projects,I had interaction with INTEL ISRAEL and FOLSOM designers and representatives which also helped in enhancing my knowledge and learn the most sophisticated design techniques on cutting edge technologies. I was involved in planning the placement of the blocks, modifications, DFM, Carmel, Pin-ring of the layout, Noise reduction techniques, RV clean-up along with the other major verification flows required. I have received many awards by PEERS for taking responsibility on tasks for long hours and dedication, for helping the INTEL PENANG team on RF slice clean up and improving the carmel quality techniques, for handling multiple tasks and pressure without hesitation, for meeting the aggressive deadlines and delivering the tasks with high quality before the schedule.

Focused on pursuing this career aspiration,I realize the need for sound academic qualification backed by quality practical work and research. I believe that Graduate studies in Electrical Engineering at your University would give me frontline exposure to the technological advancements made in the field and allow me to pursue a career where I can be creatively involved in improving existing technology into one that is faster, smaller, and more user-friendly.

I bring with me a strong grasp of fundamentals, an attitude for teamwork, a drive for taking up challenges, an enthusiastic penchant to learn, and above all, the discipline and perseverance to succeed. I wish to earn - in addition to a wealth of knowledge - a network of strong and lasting relationships with my professors and fellow students. With its eminent presence, distinguished faculty, comprehensive course curriculum and extensive research opportunities, I am confident that pursuing my Master’s in Electrical Engineering at your university will best help me meet my career goals.
