James Butler Hickok was born in Troy Grove, Illinois in 1837. He grew to be the famous Wild West gunslinger, Wild Bill Hickok. He left home in 1855 for Kansas, working as a farm helper, hired gun, and stagecoach driver. In his time as a stage coach driver, his wagon broke down and he had to camp out during the night little did Hickok know he was camped near a cinnamon bear. While he was sleeping the cinnamon bear must have thought he smelled good because it lightly bit Hickok’s leg which of course woke him up. At the time Hickok didn’t have his pistols on him but he did have his knife. Hickok and the bear fought and the bear almost killed Hickok, but before it could kill him Hickok killed the bear with just a knife the people who were …show more content…
In 1870 he married Calamity Jane but there are no records to prove this. It is reported that Wild bill had a vision that Deadwood would be his last place alive, and he told this belief to his friend Charlie Utter and the others who were traveling with them at the time. On August 2, 1876, Hickok was playing poker at Nuttal & Mann's Saloon in Deadwood which is now known as Saloon no. 10, in deadwood South Dakota. Wild Bill usually sat with his back to the wall. The only seat available when he joined the poker game was a chair that put his back to a door. Twice he asked another player Charles Rich to change seats with him, and on both occasions Rich refused. (257-270 O’Connor)
Jack McCall entered the saloon not noticed by Wild Bill. McCall walked within a few feet of Wild Bill he then drew a pistol and yelled "Damn you Take that" (sorry for the language) before shooting Wild Bill. The bullet hit Wild Bill in the back of the head killing him instantly. The cards in his hand were a pair of eights, and a pair of Aces, and a red whole card this is now known as the dead man’s hand because of this. The bullet exited through Hickok's cheek striking another player in the

Mirror Nuerons

...concept of mirror neurons may have the potential to increase any understanding of how human and animal brains may function. Furthermore, in order to discuss possible implications of mirror neurons this essay has firstly presented a detailed description for the concept of mirror neurons, supporting any explanation with relevant research. In addition to any supporting research, research providing evidence to the contrary has been provided to enable a balanced analysis. Therefore, a balanced description of mirror neurons will facilitate any critical analysis for the possible psychological implications, thereby providing a balanced argument for the legitimacy of mirror neurons. Additionally, following any analysis of relevant research, a balanced and supported conclusion was produced in order to summarise any analysed research. Accordingly, the concept of mirror neurons first came to be in the winter of 1991when a paper entitled ‘Understanding motor events: A neurophysiological study’ Di Pellegrino et al (1992), the paper was originally rejected by Nature for its lack of general interest. G. Rizzolatti, M.Fabbri-Destro (2010). However, it was this paper from the University of Parma published in 1992 by the Experimental brain journal, which first showed evidence of mirror neurons in animals. G. TEST-TAKER VIEWING BEHAVIOR DURING AN L2 VIDEO LISTENING TEST Paginated PDF Version Elvis Wagner Teachers College, Columbia University ABSTRACT The accessibility of video technology has made it possible to utilize both the auditory and visual channels to present listening texts in the second language (L2) classroom and on L2 listening tests. However, there has been little research investigating the extent to which L2 listeners actually watch the video monitor when presented with a listening video text. The current study investigated test-taker behavior on an L2 video listening test. Thirty-six test-takers were videotaped while taking a listening test composed of six separate video texts, and the amount of time test-takers made eye contact with the video monitor was computed. An analysis of the data indicated that the group of participants oriented to the video monitor 69% of the time while the video text was played. In addition, the study yielded valuable information concerning the consistency of the test-takers’ viewing behavior. INTRODUCTION Traditionally, the aural input for second language (L2) listening tasks has been delivered by a teacher reading aloud a text for the students. Later, as audio technology developed, a text was recorded on audiotape and played for students. However, with the advent and dissemination...

Corporate Culture

...employee, catching a glimpse of the true culture of an organization will help one decide if the company is a place where one can contribute and flourish. In both cases, misunderstanding the culture can lead to disaster. Corporate cultures have both gross and subtle manifestations that provide clues to the underlying norms and beliefs. Paying attention to the work practices, environment, communication paths, and even the level of humour in a company, will give one a hint of the dominant organizational culture. Identification and understanding the culture is necessary to affect any minute or large scale changes in response to market imperatives. If one does not have a clear picture of the culture one cannot effectively modify it. This paper touches on four key questions in relation to corporate culture: • • • • What is corporate culture? Why is it important to understand the corporate culture? How can one identify the corporate culture? Can corporate cultures be changed? 09/03/2002 2 Corporate Culture What is Corporate Culture? Made up of both the visible and invisible, conscious and unconscious learnings and artefacts of a group the culture is the shared mental model. This model is taken for granted by those within the group and is difficult for outsiders to decipher. It is...

Footnote to the Youth

...Chua / The Making of Jose Garcia Villa’s A Footnote to Youth 9 THE MAKING OF JOSE GARCIA VILLA’S FOOTNOTE TO YOUTH Jonathan Chua Ateneo de Manila University jchua@ateneo.edu This article recounts the story behind the publication of Villa’s stories and his book Footnote to Youth: Tales of the Philippines and Others (1933) in the United States. First, the conditions of the American literary marketplace are briefly described. Second, documents pertaining to the realization in print of Villa’s stories and his book are analyzed as sites of negotiations between colonial subject (Villa) and the colonial master (his American editors and publishers). Finally, an account of how Villa was made to circulate in the Philippines after the publication of his stories and his book in the United States is given. From these discussions the article hopes to show that Villa’s self-fashioning by publication was both subject to and critical of the colonial condition, alternately reinforcing it and challenging it. Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
