I have attended Sheridan Community Schools my entire educational career. Ever since I was in kindergarten , have always liked to learn and have always liked to succeed academically . By the time I was a 7th grader, I was in mostly all advanced placement classes and I knew that I would want to graduate with honors and then attend college to obtain a degree of some sort. I knew that this objective would mean that I would have to devote an immense amount of my time to my education. My high school career started in 8th grade when I was placed into Algebra 1 and Spanish 1. I finished these classes while maintaining my spot on the honor roll as a middle school student in high school classes. I then went on to Spanish 2 as a freshman and a few other

For several decades, researchers have documented the gap between high school and college expectations, noting that even students who complete a college preparatory curriculum in high school are often poorly prepared for college. This lack of alignment contributes to high postsecondary remediation rates and hinders college completion. Over the years, state policymakers and education leaders have responded with a variety of wide-ranging and costly efforts, including the development of state-level content standards and assessments. However, these standards vary widely among states and generally lack sufficient rigor to assure readiness for credit bearing courses in college. It is...

Factors of Career Choices as Determined by External Milieus

...FACTORS OF CAREER CHOICES AS DETERMINED BY EXTERNAL MILIEUS A Micro Research Paper Arabia, Lord Mark Anthony M. Villones, Wilson C. ED 4 Educational Research and Evaluation Masilang, Judy Marcia M. 22 March 2012 THE RESEARCH PROBLEM Career choice is an ongoing process, needs in-depth study, and requires much thought as it a decision that affects your future. As you learn new things you get an understanding of what you are interested in, what you would enjoy doing and what will be one of the best paying options. Career planning is a never-ending process as you gain experiences, grow, and improve. You need to give it a thought (Koonar, 2009). And there would always be a time that students will definitely begin to discern their future career. When the students reached this point, they now start to solicit ideas of what course to be selected as an embodiment of their future career. However, though most of them solicit ideas from the people who are learned in a particular discerning situation, they usually end up selecting their own choices (Polistico, 2009). When they fail to choose what their hearts desire, then would most likely shift course and end up the college level doubling the time intended for the particular course. The purpose of the study is to determine if career choice is really determined by the external milieus to which the students used to live. Furthermore, it seeks primarily to explore the extent of how these external factors could predict students’...

Career Exploration

...Career Exploration Paper Tori Turner Liberty University Career Exploration Paper Career Field & Occupation Choice Within society, there are many occupations to explore and chose. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) results showed that my personal career strengths fall under the area of teaching and counseling. Currently, as a school counselor for a high school in Duncanville, Texas, a suburb outside of Dallas, I find the results of the assessment to be very accurate. Making the decision to become a counselor is a rewarding and exciting career choice. In the world of counsling, there are many individuals who place emphasis on not just basic implications, but also on theoretical studies that usually are a part of their professional and personal experiences. As times have change, so have educational curricula. Counselors and educators, their philosophies, and educational standards continue to change; therefore, educators have to take on responsibility and think more about their chosen roles within the educational system and the various means of combining theory and practice. The general examination of the different roles in counseling, personal career assessments and ideological relationships each play a role in the area of education and counseling. As a result of the choice as having a career as a counselor attaches the decision to continue to research theories and then integrate them into areas of education helps to build a solid foundation, which will...

Rapley ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to provide a concise career guide for current and potential doctoral students in accounting and, in the process, help them gain a greater awareness of what it means to be an accounting professor. The guide can also be used by accounting faculty in doctoral programs as a starting point in mentoring their doctoral students. We begin with foundational guidance to help doctoral students better understand the “big picture” surrounding the academic accounting environment. We then provide specific research guidance and publishing guidance to help improve the probability of publication success. Actions are suggested that doctoral students and new faculty can take to help jump-start their academic careers. We finish with guidance regarding some important acronyms of special interest to doctoral students in accounting. Keywords: career guidance; doctoral students; research; publishing. An ad hoc committee of the American...

Flores Endowed Chair of MBA Studies Louisiana State University Current version: January 4, 2011 (Original version: November 19, 2007) Most undergraduate and masters students in finance (MS and MBA) are preparing for a career in the world of finance. Oftentimes, jobs in finance have titles like financial analyst, credit analyst, and assistant treasurer, with the possibilities of someday becoming a vice president of finance, chief financial officer, treasurer or some other high-ranking position of responsibility. Knowing how the financial world operates, the characteristics of securities, and how investment decisions should be made serves one well for many career paths. The study of finance also helps to prepare a person to manage his or her own money and increase the likelihood of accruing significant wealth over time through solid principles of investing. Few students consider another finance-related career option: becoming an academic in finance. Most students know little about this career choice. Their experiences with finance academics are typically limited to their familiarity with classes taken from their professors. But there is a lot more to it than this. And it is probably...

Modeling, Visualization, and Assessment

...Modeling, Visualization, and Assessment Modeling, visualization, and assessment are three tools that when incorporated properly, can make any classroom successful. Visualization is now being used in several careers. Disciplines such as mechanical design and architecture have traditional utilized drawings such as plans, sections, and elevations as the primary medium for design communication as well as documentation (Guidera, 2010). Highway design engineers now use visualization as an opportunity to improve the entire planning, design, and construction process for all types of projects, big and small, and from start to finish (Taylor, & Moler, 2010). The following sections will discuss incorporating modeling activities, creative ways to use visualization tools, technologies for assessing student progress, and difficulties expected with the incorporation of modeling, visualization, and assessment. Incorporating Modeling Activities Modeling activities can be tailored to fit any classroom situation. There are several things to keep in mind when using or creating modeling activities for instruction. One thing to keep in mind is that the activity is should be interactive. Preparing for the Workplace

...GOOD TO GO!!!! preparing Students for Success in College and the Workforce “We will end what has become a race to the bottom in our schools and instead spur a race to the top by encouraging better standards and assessments… And I'm calling on our nation's governors and state education chiefs to develop standards and assessments that don't simply measure whether students can fill in a bubble on a test, but whether they possess 21st century skills like problem-solving and critical thinking and entrepreneurship and creativity. That is what we'll help them do later this year -- when we finally make No Child Left Behind live up to its name by ensuring not only that teachers and principals get the funding that they need, but that the money is tied to results.” President Barack Obama Remarks to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce March 10, 2009 Last year, the President challenged states to develop standards and assessments that will help America’s children rise to the challenge of graduating from high school prepared for college and the workplace. With many states well positioned to adopt these standards, the Governors initiative is an essential first step in improving the...

Perfect Essay In High School Writing

...Throughout all of high school, students are taught in minimal ways to produce “perfect” essays and present them so that when they get to college they can pass their classes. This means that high school teachers only teach them to write so specifically and in such a hard structured manner, that many students hardly ever learn to write papers that flow. In high school, I always wrote really nice papers that my teachers enjoyed grading, however, I always hated writing them because if I did not use the cookie cutter format that they gave us, my teachers would not accept the work. The format that I am referring to goes as follows: hook, introduction, and thesis for paragraph one, three body paragraphs with two examples to support your thesis in each paragraph, and finally a conclusion ("Essay Template"). In total, there were five paragraphs, never any more, and never any less. The hook was always supposed to be a quote related to the topic or a factual piece of information...
