What is the next step after graduating high school? It is that time of year where students are graduating from high school and planning to further their education. If you were like me last year, you are more than likely wondering what is expected at college. When I first started college I was so nervous because I didn’t know what to expect or what was expected of me. Now, I feel college life is so much more enjoyable then high school. I have so much more control over my education and more freedom. This paper will address the main differences from high school to college such as college scene, academic level, and rewarding experience. A college scene has a different scene then high school. Social activities are one of the biggest differences transitioning from high school to college. I think the social scene is so much more different than high school because you have more freedom such as choice of college and residence. You have the ability to choose where to reside at whether it is on campus or outside of campus. Most students attending college live on campus and experience the unsupervised and independent lifestyle. At college you will be experiencing your own rules and living on your own. Therefore, you will be subjected to different social activities. This means they are subjected to pressure and temptations. It is important to choose activities that you are comfortable with and not letting someone else pressure you into something you don’t believe in. At college people attend from different backgrounds and places. There is a larger and more variety group of students attending college than there is in high school. In high school you typically grow up and see the same people every day for four years. The main struggle when going from high school to college will be balancing your social life from your school work. In conclusion, there are plenty of ways to have fun while in college without turning to negative behavior. One of challenges transitioning from high school is making your own choices such as participating in co-curricular activities, managing your study time with your personal life, choosing classes in your own major. From my experience, making your decision on your own can be difficult. There are a lot of decisions to be made while attending college. If you are living on campus you are living without your parents or teachers supervision therefore, you are on your own. At college you will be introduced to negative activities that can affect your studying habits such as drugs, alcohol and sex. Without supervision you have to learn to control the peer pressure from others. It is important to stay clear from these negative behaviors because a college education should be taken seriously. A daily will help keep you on track of what needs to get accomplished and stay on track. When I had started college I noticed it was so much more difficult to keep track of everything because you don’t have someone to keep track of everything for you. A college education is will help you succeed in life and live a better lifestyle. In high school you don’t have the choices to choose your own class, manage your school time, and the variety of co-curricular activities available. Although, there are some mandatory classes at college but, after you pass those classes you have free choice of classes. In general, college life has so much more freedom where in high school it is limited. Therefore, decision-making plays a key factor at college. College has a different academic level than high school. In college classes you are responsible to keep track of your assignments, study time, and tests. Professors are not always there to keep you on track like they were in high school. One of the biggest differences I have noticed is the teacher doesn’t hound you for your assignments or test. If you miss an exam more than likely you will receive a zero and not be able to make it up. Where if you were in high school they would make sure you completed a test or an assignment. You are the one responsible to get your notes or assignments if you were not there. The classes at college are also longer and more challenging. Unlike high school classes where you attend consistently for eight hours five days a week where in college you may only attend class for two hours. In high school classes you are told when to complete assignments and take notes. When in college you have the choice to take notes or just sit in class. Also you may only study a couple of hours outside of high school where in college their more material and studying 2 to 3 hours may be needed.
College is a rewarding experience. Although it isn’t all fun, there is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into it. College can improve your lifestyle by advancing in your workplace. Because of, the economic downturn, employers are looking for employees that have a degree in college. Unlike a high school diploma, a college degree is more useful and favored when entering the workplace. However, a high school diploma doesn’t cost you as much as if you were to further your education. When you further your education you are expected to pay for your degree. Also when you are in high school as a student you aren’t a hundred percent dedicated to earning a high school diploma. As if you were in college, a student would put more devotion into their school work because they the one are paying for their education. In all, a higher education equals more money, better job opportunities, and overall a better lifestyle in general.
College can be a scary and overwhelming experience yet, it also can be a life changing experience. At college you will experience many differences that you have not went through in high school such as social changes, academic level, and an overall better lifestyle change. College is a rewarding lifestyle change that can affect your future greatly by being able to advance in the workplace. From my experience, college is much more enjoyable than high school with all the freedom. Learning the critical similarities and differences will help you have a more enjoyable and not stressful first college school year.

...High School vs. College High school and college are alike, but also different in many way. They are both educational institutions which help student become the best to their ability’s. Having a good education is the key to becoming successful in life. It is a proven fact. This achievement requires not only graduating from high school, but also from college. Moving from high school to college may be an exciting, but also changeling. There are the main differences and then there are differences that aren't very distinct. These differences include the opportunity for classes, professors, and the reasonability it come with. The type of classes often differ between high school and college. Most of the classes students attend are usually mandatory, which means you have no say whether you want you go or not. High school classes you attend one class after another, spending 6-7 hours each day in class and every day of the week. You may study outside class as little as 0-2 hour’s week, and this may be mostly last-minute test preparation. You usually don't need to read anything more than once, and sometimes just listening in class and taking notes is enough to pass the class. As for college classes, it’s a little more complicated than just not study and go every day. College courses can be online and can complete homework whenever you have the time. Your classes are set up to fit your schedule not the other way around. You could have class twice a week, and maybe even in the afternoon...

...McCowell High School Teachers vs. College Professors Many people assume that a teacher is a teacher regardless of whether they teach high school or college, but in reality there are many differences between the two. Although high school’s purpose is to prepare a student for college, a high school teacher is much more lenient and will push you to get things done. As many college students will tell you, a professor will not wait on you to do work and will not bend the rules for you. Regardless of what some may think, there are many differences between educators who teach at different levels. The differences range from different grading styles and policies to due dates and deadlines. High school teachers let their students get away with so much stuff. The students can get away with skipping, texting in class, cheating, and numerous other “illegal” school activities. Most high school students do not apply themselves when it comes to doing school work and projects. So they just sit there in class and try to be the class clown. They know that their punishment for disrupting the class is not going to be severe. In high school, the punishment will not be as strict as a college professor would administer. If a student in high school has a cell phone out and is caught, the phone is taken away and then later given back. The high school student obviously gets a less severe punishment and only looses a cell phone for a few hours. To get out of anything in high school, all you really...

...More Responsibilities High school life versus college life is like sugar versus salt; they both look alike but the taste is much different. The first difference that I can tell is that I turn to be partially independent. My parents are not treating me like a baby anymore; but instead they now treat me as a young adult. When I was in high school, my parents would not let me to drive to school even when I got my driver license at age of 17. They did not feel safe when I drive the car to school alone. Since I go to college, I now can drive my own car to go to school and I can go home whenever I want to. Besides that, they did not let me go out late but now I can be home anytime that I want. That is the first thing that I notice the difference between high school and college life. The second thing that I can clearly tell the difference is about conversations. High school students tend to talk about whatever they want to without thinking. The most interesting subjects for high school students are: where do we go after school today; what games do we play today; what movies will be released this week… all of those subjects are different, however, they all have one thing in common is that they are all about entertaining. But in college, it is different; people talk more about school and their careers. I am not saying all college students but at least the people that I know in college includes myself; we care more about subjects which are related to school and work. Our conversations...

College vs High School?

...Hundreds upon hundreds of miles away from the place called “home”. For some, leaving just one or two hours from home for college can be one of the hardest things to endure during the first year of college. For a more select few, the journey and adventure that is even farther away from home can be a little trickier. Getting up and moving to a foreign place to start a new life takes courage. However, not even having an opportunity to return home for more than twice a school year, takes a different kind of courage. With having the limited ability to go home and see friends and family in other states, what is the next best thing to seeing your loved ones? Social media. Staying connected to other people is what makes humans human. The fascinating part about social media today is society’s endless amount of options to choose from. Connecting to friends and family is easier today than it was 10 years ago thanks to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and many more. Liz Chevalier, a Graduate Teaching Assistant from New York said that phone calls are a more personal way to get in touch with people she cares about, however there’s not always enough time for that. She adds, “Social media provides a way for us to keep in touch on our own time, and allows me to communicate what is happening in my life to all of my friends and family at once, rather than texting or calling each one individually.” The only downside to relying on social media and other telecommunications to keep in touch with loved...

College vs. High School

...I think there is a big difference between college courses and classes that I took in high school. It has been fifteen years since I was in high school so remembering differences will probably be less fresh in my mind than someone that just graduated. I think the biggest difference between high school and college is that in high school I was expected and made to attend high school as where college is my choice to attend. In high school failure was not an option for me as my parents were strict and a grade below a B was not acceptable. Therefore, I applied myself to my academics because I had to. The curriculum that was set in high school was mostly a set curriculum were you take English, Math, Science and so forth. We did not have a chance to set our classes that would focus toward a career like business management or accounting. College courses are much different. I get to choose which degree program that I want to pursue that will help my career. College also requires me to be self-disciplined to stay on task and dedicate the time for my courses especially taking them online. Attendance is crucial in college education because higher attendance reflects better learning and higher grades. Research also shows that those students that obtain higher grades throughout college resulted in better chances of career success after college. I plan on using different strategies to obtain success with my college education. My plan is to organize my time management. Setting...

...classroom full of high school student, buzzing about the past weekend’s social events, or last week’s assignments? Or is it a college classroom, with an instructor giving a lecture and several rows of seats filled with students? Do you imagine sitting in front of a computer, completing your assignments from a distance and completely on your own schedule? With those different examples given, I’d like to borrow some of your time and explain how it is education, whether high school or college, can be very similar or quite different. In high school, there are many different social groups found within the adolescent community found on a public campus. Often times, the reason for the different sorts of groups, or cliques, are due to the classes or extracurricular activities one may take. For example, those that are very involved with drama class or a part of the school band would most likely be nicknamed (as well as classified as) “drama geeks” or “band geeks.” Those that are able and choose to dress in very expensive clothing may be nicknamed “preps.” Many may consider this as unfair to the student body as a whole, but it is just how students identify with their peers and themselves. In college universities, the cliques (or groups) evolve into houses, also known as fraternities. Students often times must prove themselves “worthy” of being a part of these groups, either by performing tasks around the campus or rallying for the fraternity. In community colleges, these groups are...

Is College for Everyone

...Each decade, Thirty million American children enter high school but only six million of them ever receive a college degree. The remaining twenty four million kids either drop out; complete high school and enter the work force; or attend a community college or university for a couple of years. (TK) College is not for everyone; student’s mindsets are based on parents thinking, the success rate in entrepreneurs vs. technical, universities vs. IT schools, and how college doesn’t equal success. (TK) For a lot of people, going to a four-year college seems like an automatic choice when they graduate from high school. The reason is obvious – higher income. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, a bachelor’s degree accounted for an average of $16,900 in additional income per year compared to a high school diploma ($30,000 versus $46,900). (TK) Over a 30-year career in the workforce, that’s more than a $500,000 difference in earnings. These numbers may not paint the whole picture, however. Due to the increasingly high costs associated with a college education, as well as other drawbacks, more and more people have been considering trade school as an education alternative. (TK) Trade School vs. College: Drawbacks to College Education Length: Four (or More) Years vs. Two Years For starters, a bachelor’s degree typically takes four years of study, which means that people who enter the workforce after receiving their bachelor’s degree aren’t doing so until age 22...

Public vs Private Universities

...November 18 2013 Public vs. Private All high school seniors nationwide and even some juniors have heightened responsibility and many more difficult decisions to make. One of the main decisions is deciding on a plan for schooling after finally throwing their caps in the blue sky on graduation night. When considering and picking the most comfortable university for the student, there are many different factors to think long and hard about: seeing if the school offers the major of their choice or something that is of interest to them, deciding on a comfortably located university that fits each student's living situation perfectly, signing up and acquiring financial aid, and deciding on a public or private university. One of the factors mentioned should not be a factor at all. Students should not have to worry about struggling to afford a supposedly better education at a private instution versus a public institution. The major difference between private and public institutions is how they are funded and how they use their funds. (Public University vs. Private College) Public insitutions were mostly founded by state governments as early as the 1800s. (Public University vs. Private College) Because most public universities are founded by public funds, the tuition is significantly lower. This is where public and private institutions differentiate. Private universities rely mostly on tuition and private contributions for funding. (Public University vs. Private College) This fact alone explains...

...largest issue. Also, athletes in public schools start sports a lot later than private schools. Splitting schools and the way you split them has been talked about my tons of experts. Colleges could also be affected by decisions made. Funding is another large issue that comes about in the debate. Comparing enrollment is a very controversial argument as well. The last argument is private schools have to travel very far during tournament time. In all, private schools should not be in the same athletic division as public schools. Recruitment is the process of finding the best individuals academically and athletically to attend your school that may come from another district. This is such a hot topic because private schools can recruit top athletes and top students, and public schools cannot recruit. Public schools have to accept any athlete or student in their district-they have no control over their enrollment, as private schools do. Individuals are attending private schools for sports, not academics. “That’s why I keep telling members we can’t look at it as a public vs. private school issue,” he said. “We have to look at an open enrollment (recruitment) too.” (“Wisconsin Class War”). To solve the recruitment, experts...
