Hilda Wardwell graduated high school in 1940, with one of the largest classes the school ever saw. She loved school, and her favorite subjects were English, math, and music. She played every sport and joined everything there was to join. Hilda took chemistry and biology, and was one of only two girls. She also studied ancient history, French, and Latin. She took piano lessons for seven years, played the trombone in the school marching band, and loved to sing. Though there weren't many dances at Bangor High, there was a dance hall on the street she lived, and she went and danced there often. There were several differences between school when she was a teenager and now. At Bangor High, there was no lunch provided, so students walked home to eat instead of in a school cafeteria. There were no school busses, and almost no high schoolers had their own cars. Parents didn't interfere much, so it was really up to you as a student to do well and graduate. If you got in trouble, you were expected to take care of it yourself. They also had to wear white and maroon uniforms, which were the school colors. Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores attended school in the mornings, while the freshmen went during the afternoon. …show more content…
Mullen, her English teacher in her junior year. Hilda described Mrs. Mullen as very strict, when she smiled you knew you were in trouble, and if you were to draw a caricature, Mrs. Mullen would be it. She always had an A in English, and so when Mrs. Mullen gave her a B, Hilda confronted her about it. Mullen told her she'd heard about her from the other teachers and that she needed to straighten up. Years later when she went back to ask Mrs. Mullen a question about grammar, she was pleasantly surprised to find her old teacher delighted to see her; she didn't think she would even recognize
