The two pro-slavery authors both weren’t on board with the capitalist system of the North, as a result of the propertied classes in the North were under no legal or moral obligation to provide any assistance to the working class, although, the slaves in the South were guaranteed basic necessities by their owners. The author from the Charleston Courier continued to believe that the employer hired the wageworker depending on supply and demand regardless of the wage was considered sufficient to support the family, while the slave owner had a Christian duty to care for the body and soul of his slaves. The author of the review in the Southern Press Review suggested that separation of families among slaves was the exception more than the rule, because wage earners in the North had to leave their wives and children to find work opportunities or risk the lives of their families being traded. As a result, the economic system in the North from the opinion of the author’s separated families more so than the institution of slavery in the South. This author implied as well that the author from the Charleston Courier stated obviously that the wealthy farmers in the South have a moral duty to look after the slaves, although the capitalist in the North had no legal or moral reason to care for the working class.
The Virginia slave owners urged other slave owners to provide slaves with sufficient food and shelter and avoid cruel language and corporal punishment when disciplining their slaves. The Virginia slave owners suggested that if masters largely followed such practices, that living conditions of slaves exceeded those of the working class in the North. The immigrants mentioned working long hours for little pay. Both immigrants talked about the difficulty for immigrants to find work. The immigrants reported that after not finding work it would often cause them to turn to alcohol,

...1. TO WHAT EXTENT WAS THE RISE TO POWER OF HITLER AND THE THIRD REICH, THE RESULT OF PREVIOUS POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS? Introduction Paragraph: Hitler was able to become Germany’s chancellor in 1933 and after 6 months he was already able to establish a dictatorship. It is surprising how such an abominable personage was able to gain total control over Germany, which had been able to become a democratic republic. As Kershaw stated, “the future of Weimar looked promising. And without the onset of the world economic crisis from 1929 it might have remained so”. Thesis: The rise to power of Hitler and the Third Reich was to a large extent the result of previous political and economic problems, such as Germany’s authoritarian origins, the minimum support the Weimar Republic had, WWI and the Great Depression. Body Paragraph 1 – Political and social structure of German authoritarian origins Germany had always favored nationalism, militarism, and anti-Semitism; all emotions in the German people that went back to Germany’s roots and history. Before the Third Reich and the Weimar Republic, Germany lived a prosperous period known as the Second Reich, during which they became a great empire due to the authoritarian traditions and the military success. This is a view extremely supported by the “structuralists”, who believe that Nazism and Hitler were simply products of German history and that they were forces that still dominated...

Art History Essay Ch 29 Dq 1

...Tiffany Fong Period 2 Gibson Discussion Question #1 When analyzing Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe with Giorgione/Titian's Pastoral Symphony, one can see many similarities and differences. When Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe was first introduced in 1863, it was placed under the title of Le Bain at the Salon des Refusés and was the central attraction of laughter and outrage. Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe depicts two nude women and two clothed men having a picnic. The painting presents problems for the viewer as they are forced to question the morality of the scene, whether to consider the nude, naked in a public place and exhibited to the public or if they are an active partner. Even though the intended reaction to the picture is unclear, the presence of the nude controls the viewer's emotional response. The presentation of the figures in soft focus and broadly painted landscape promoted severe criticism. Also, the loose manner of painting contradicts the crisp forms with the bright clothes and food in the left corner. In the main figures, there are only a few lights and darks, which makes them distinctive from the background. On the contrary, the painting of Titian's Pastoral Symphony, both mysterious in meaning and authorship, has been known as one of the most influential paintings of the nineteenth century. The main figures are two men who are seated on the grass against a vast countryside setting. Titian had been interested on landscapes in his early career, and...

Abstraction from Society

...information—or story—that traces the history of an ordinary object. The premise is based on our classroom discussions about the various ways discourse, power, consumption, and bodies are linked to gender, race, sexuality, class, religion, geography, and so on. My aim is to get you thinking seriously about the material conditions that produce commodities for everyday use (often hidden and obscured), as well as their emotional/cultural/social value (often produced and enforced by media, norms, discipline, and bodily surveillance). For example, when considering an ordinary pair of jeans, it is important to understand how their material history goes beyond simply when and where they were purchased. From production to consumption, a whole range of transnational labor practices (that primarily utilize the skills of young, low-income women of color) and advertising strategies (that primarily utilize the bodies and sexuality of young women) are deployed. Many of these practices violate international labor and environmental standards. At the same time, this ordinary pair of jeans may also contain a personal history that reflects emotional, cultural, or social values (a particular brand, a form of resistance to dress codes and cultural clothing norms, a gift from a beloved older sister, etc.). Your job is to choose an ordinary object (piece of fruit, family heirloom, beauty product, item of clothing…whatever, really) and trace both its material and personal history. There will be three components:...
