...Organisations can be classified in terms of their business purpose, ‘for profit’ or ‘not for profit’ organisations. Organisations that seek to make a profit are mainly private sector businesses which provide goods/services and must make a profit to survive. They can break even or even make a loss for a very short time or they will cease to exist. The main structure of profit seeking organisations includes: 1. SOLE TRADER. Business owned by a single person, bearing full responsibility of financing and the burden of any debts of the business. The purpose of its existence is to sell goods/services with a view to make a profit out of the transaction. 2. PARTNERSHIPS. Business owned by two or more people. The purpose of a partnership is to share the burden of raising finance and the debts of the business as well as the profits generated by the sale of goods/services. Partnerships also enable the owners to share skills and knowledge required to run the business. 3. COMPANIES. Private and Public Limited companies have their own legal identity separate from its owners. They provide goods/services and seek to make a profit and maximise the wealth its owners/shareholders. These are mainly larger organisations than sole traders and partnerships, and may have more stakeholders, depending on how large they are. The survival of the large organisations does not depend solely on making a profit but on other factors as well such as public perception. They aim to be socially responsible and take...

...the confidence to speak to their managers about their views or any ideas they might have. The last element of the Harrods Human Resources programme is Living the brand values and making sure that all the employees be it senior staff or ground employees who work the shop floor understand and model the brand values. The Human Resources department at Harrods developed this programme in order to improve the job satisfaction of their employees and also to reduce the employee turnover. It has resulted in Harrods having a better relationship with its employees and one in which they feel comfortable approaching management to discuss issues regarding their job etc. This change has made Harrods successful as they put their employees first and always listen to them. Harrods have also adopted different engagement methods to give employees and managers the opportunity to share ideas and views. The methods include: • An internal Employee magazine which is a way of keeping staff motivated as it contains competitions and keeps staff updated to any changes or interesting interviews etc. • An Intranet which allows employees to pick what information they wish to be informed about rather than having to read or learn about things which they have no interest in. • ‘Other forms of employee voice’ which contains a ‘Bright ideas’ scheme which was made in order to allow employees to contribute ideas towards company improvement. • Morning Briefing allows employees who work the shop floor...

...You are working as an intern with MacTaggart Consulting, an organisation who deliver training on customer-related issues. As part of your training you have been asked to write an evaluative report on the customer care culture of an organisation of your choice. Other interns are based in different parts of the consultancy. You have been encouraged to keep in touch with each other and form a mutual support group. You decide to call a meeting with the other interns to discuss the report task. Your mentor says she would like to come along to hear how things are going and she offers to chair the meeting. Send out an invitation to the meeting by email. Since this is a notice of meeting it should include the topic, the date and time, and a proposed venue. You need at least four interns at your meeting. Don’t forget to ask them to get back to you with availability as well as the details of their chosen organisation. You will need these details for your agenda. Once you know who is attending, create an agenda for the meeting. Each intern will speak about the organisation they’ve chosen and how their research is progressing. This means each person will be responsible for one agenda item. Prepare your own agenda item. This will involve making notes on your progress so far; what you’ve found out about your chosen topic; what difficulties (if any) you’ve encountered; and what proposals you’re considering. You can create a brief electronic presentation if you think it...
