Holy Grail Strategy
The Holy Grail trading strategy is a swing trading strategy, which finds application in any markets and any time frame. The strategy is based on Wellers Wilder’s ADX (Average Directional Index). Linda Bradford
Raschke and Larry Connors named it so for its easy way to setup(see Connors & Raschke, 1995, p. 88), but we will see, it is not that easy to realize in an automatic processing environment. Both are prominent traders and therefore this strategy is extremely popular (see Woods, 2012).
The Holy Grail Method measures when to enter a position after a retracement by finding pullback opportunities in an up trending instrument (see Etzkorn, 2004, p. 3). Once in a trade, it looks forward for a continuation of the previous trend. Normally one of the following outcomes follows: If there is a previous high/low movement, the trade ends with a small profit. Otherwise a whole new continuation of an up-going trend starts (see
Connors & Raschke, 1995, p. 88).
The strategy catches corrections of an up-trending instrument (instrument with increased momentum) by using a 14-period ADX Indicator and a 20-period average moving indicator (here EMA). The ADX measures the strength of a trend (trend-intensity), but is non-directional. The EMA (Exponential Moving Average) identifies trend directions over a period of time by building a moving average of the the past (here 20-periods) closing prices. The following section describes how these indicators will be applied in the Holy Grail Strategy.

Trading Rules & Indicators
The following trading rules are extracted out of the book “Street Smarts - High Probability Short-term
Trading Strategies” (see Connors & Raschke, 1995, p. 81)

Buy & Sell Rules
1. A 14-period ADX must initially be greater than 30 and rising. This will identify a strongly trending market. 2. Look for a retracement in price to the 20-period exponential moving average. Usually the price retracement will be accompanied by a turn down in the ADX.
3. When the price touches the 20-period exponential moving average, put a buy stop above the high of the previous bar.
4. Once filled, enter a protective sell stop at the newly formed swing low. Trail the stop as profits accrue and look to exit at the most recent swing high. If you think the market may continue its move, you might exit part of the position at the most recent swing high and tighten stops on the balance.
5. If stopped out, re-enter this trade by placing a new buy stop at the original entry price.
6. After a successful trade, the ADX must once again turn up above 30 before another retracement to the moving average can be traded.

Room for Interpretation
The following part of the description is unintelligible. “. . . you might exit part of the position at the most recent swing high and tighten stops on the balance”. The use of “. . . might exit. . . ” gives an option to sell or not. Together with “. . . tighten stops on the balance” it could mean, referred to might exit, that if you don’t sell, readjust the stop-loss marks tight to the price. Or it could mean, that if you sell, set a new buy-stop on the same price level.

3

Referred to outline 5 you should “re-enter this trade by placing a new buy stop at the original entry price” when you are stopped out. This is also unintelligible, because it is not clear what “stopped out” means. Does it mean stopped-out by the stop-loss at the swing-low (protective sell) or does it mean stopped-out by the swing-high trigger.
If stopped-out by the swing-low, the next trade-in should be based on the buy rules mentioned later. So the circle of buying and selling will be closed. If stopped-out by the swing-high trigger and it is still an up-trending instrument, the goal is to re-enter the up-trend. But it is unclear, when to sell here. Furthermore it is not possible to test against the buy rules , because in an up-trending instrument (price higher than
EMA) buy rule no. 3 will never be reached.
Closer consideration of the examples given in the book, the instrument is sold when reaching the swing-high of the previous trend. There is no attention on a still up-going trend (see picture point 2), so here is room for optimization by setting tight stop-loss marks after the swing high is reached and keep the position as long as possible. Two trades set-up on this chart. The ADX is greater than 30 and the price corrects back to the 20-period exponential moving average.
Our buy stop is filled above the high of the previous bar. An initial stop is placed at B, the retracement low.
We are looking for a retest of point A. Our trade objective is met at point 2. Another trade is entered at point 3. The market reaches our level C objective at point 4. (Connors & Raschke, 1995, p. 82/83)

Pseudocode
The following pseudo-code is an interpretation of the previous description. It is interpreted in a daily context for better understanding. So “Yesterday” means one observation period back (lag of 1).
Price_Today / Price_Yesterday are closing prices. There is also a usage of low and high prices, for example
Price_Yesterday_High.

4

Buy Rules
As mentioned in the introduction of the Holy Grail Strategy, setting the buy rules is the “easy” way of the setup. The second part, the sell rules, may be easy to realize as a not automated solution (manual & visual).
But as part of an automatic backtest application, several points have to be considered.
# 1. ADX greater 30 and trending (strongly trending market)
IF (ADX_Today > 30) & (ADX_Today > ADX_Yesterday)
# 2. Retracement in price to the 20-period EMA (down-trending to EMA)
IF (Price_Yesterday > EMA) & (Price_Today < Price_Yesterday)
# 3. Price touches the 20-period EMA, than buystop at yesterdays high
IF (Price_Today Price_Yesterday_High) THAN Buy instrument

Sell Rules
By interpreting the description (“Trail the stop as profits accrue”), it is helpful to use a significance parameter to adjust the stop-loss marks, to prevent short price slump sells, see outline 4. One solution is to subtract a carefully considered value of yesterday’s price, so the gap is greater between today’s price and the stop-loss mark. The following solution sells, when the previous swing high is reached. It tries to get another position immediately. Otherwise the buying rules of the previous section will be applied again.
# 4. Set protective sell-stop at yesterday low (stop-loss at swing-low)
IF (Price_Today < Price_Yesterday_Low) THEN SELL
# 4. Trail the stop as profits accrue (readjust stop-loss)
# - price_today significant greater than price_yesterday to prevent short price slump sells.
# - new Stop-Loss significant smaller than price_today to prevent short short price slump sells.
IF (Price_Today > (Price_Yesteray - SIGNIFICANCE)) THEN Set New Stop-Loss
# 4. Exit at the most recent swing high (Optional, see Room for Interpretation)
# - use an indicator to find last swing high
IF (Price_Today > SWING-HIGH) THEN SELL

Possible Optimizations
There are two possible optimizations to stay in an up-trending instrument. The first one is to set tight stop-loss after reaching the previous swing-high. The second one is sell and re-buy immediately with other selling rules.
# 1. Set tight stop-losses after reaching swing-high
IF (Price_Today > SWING-HIGH) THEN Set Close Stop-Loss
# 2. Try to get another position immediately after selling
IF (Price_Today >= SWING-HIGH) THEN Sell AND Re-Buy with other sell conditions

5

Further Indicators
The swing-low point will be detected when the ADX is greater than 30 and the actual price is higher than the previous price (up-trending instrument). Furthermore the actual price must touches the 20-period EMA.
To find the previous swing-high point of an equity curve there are some requirements:
• The indicator should be sensitive for smaller swings, to earn also profit out of small cycles
• The indicator should be peaky, to identify the highest point
• The indicator should oscillate around a fixed value (zero) to calculate the previous swing-high point backwards from a given date.
Several indicators in [R]can be used to find the last swing high:

DPO (De-trended Price Oscillator)
Donchian Channels reversed by some %
WPR
bolligner bands reversal
CCI

Andrews Pitchfork mt4 or mt5 would be a great solution, but it is not available for [R].

Backtest & Visual Analysis
This section describes the basic settings for creating a backtesting framework with R-Studio, the instrument backtests in an semi-automated solution and the analysis of the results. There are also two small functions developed, to calculate the last swing up and downs, because I could find any other indicator / method.

Basic R-Studio Setup
The following sections describe basic set-up parameters, which are normally always used with specific parameters. The [R] execution output is suppressed to clean-up the document.

My youthful nonconformity beats my laziness, deciding to venture in search of the holy grail of sodas. Thumbs up if you feel identified. Now you wonder: what is it that binds me so strongly to this brand, which draws me out of my comfort zone, when the actual product is the same? The answer is simple: it makes me feel good and happy. As Antonio Damasio, a kwon neuroscientist said: ‘We are not thinking machines that feel, we are feeling machines that think’ (Damasio, 1994) Emotions are strong mediators of message processing, exploited by big brands to sell their products and shape our cognitive responses. The brain is the main responsible of consumer behaviour. And it can be modulated by brands through communication, being an addresser with great authority on the addressee, making a combination of code in right context and contact an effective weapon of consumption. Advertising has the power to make our amygdala, the controller of emotions, shake. It influences our prefrontal cortex to make choices, leading a perfect combination in mixing feelings with, what we think, are “rational decisions”. They create new selling strategies that jump over the connotative meaning of the advertising to reach the denotative, changing the process of buying for a process of feeling in the way they communicate the product to their target. In other words, I go...

Germanic Romance

...Germanic Romance as a Getaway from Medieval Society Erec and Enide, Parzival, and Tristran were all very popular Medieval Authurian Romances which have captivated many readers through the years. I too have found reading them to be very enjoyable experience. I particular liked the aspect of reading stories that were written centuries ago, which has given me some insight into the culture of medieval northern Europe. I have been able to realize the importance that medieval people placed on the ideas of being a knight, courtly love, and King Authur’s court. I believe I know why these works were so popular, it was because works like this allowed individuals of medieval societies to be taken away to a fantasy land where everyone was beautiful and those who acted in the right manner were rewarded for such actions. This fantastic other world was a major contradiction to what life in medieval times was actually like. I have read many articles describing medieval life as being hard, rough, unrelenting, a constant struggle for survival, routinely fighting off invading armies, and those who did live glorious lives were a select few. But when one would read one of these three stories they could visualize King Aurthur’s court which was full of brave knights who had beautiful wives, and one could only hope that somehow he would find himself in this wonderful place and everything would be just fine. This is why these stories were so popular because they could transport the reader from there...

King Arthur Essay

...High king of Great Britain, son of Uther Pendragon and Igraine. Arthur stands as one of the greatest mythical heroes that the world has ever known. So great was the influence of Arthur, that stories of the high king traveled far beyond the realm of Britain into France, the rest of Europe, the Middle East, and even into parts of Asia. The coming of Arthur was prophesied years before he was born. Arthur was born into a world of chaos and disorder where wars between different Celtic tribes were prevalent, different Saxon raids charged through the countryside brining fear and terror, and bandits and other criminals ran free all over the British isles, spreading crime like a disease. When Arthur took the throne however, this chaos dissolved within a matter of years and Britain became an ideal place of chivalry, honor, and justice. It is truly amazing how much of an influence that one man could have. With his advisor Merlin at his side and with the fellowship of the courageous knights of the Round Table, Arthur transformed a chaotic land of villainy and danger into a realm of peace, tranquility, and adventure. All of Britain looked up to Arthur and spoke of him with awe and admiration. The real Arthur was most likely a Celtic general that lived sometime in the 6th century. He advised various kings to unite together to fight the raiding Saxons. He was most likely a military genius. In those dark days, true heroes were very scarce and the people looked for someone like Arthur to...

In today’s world, these rules are embodied in International Financial Reporting Standards. Unfortunately for many good but unwitting people, advocating the U.S. adoption of IFRS is a fool’s errand. Mythological and Archetypal Elements in the Natural

...and Archetypal elements are expressed in many ways in The Natural. The characters of Roy Hobbs and Pop Fisher are both based on the mythology of Sir Perceval and the Holy Grail. Filmmakers of The Natural also demonstrated mythological and archetypal elements with most of the shots in the film. The character of Roy Hobbs can be seen as Sir Perceval, one of the Knights of the Round Table. The most obvious example of this is that Sir Perceval was a knight of the Round Table and Roy Hobbs plays for the New York Knights. In the legend of Sir Perceval, he goes on a quest in search of the Holy Grail. Roy Hobbs is on a journey to succeed as a baseball player and the Holy Grail being the pennant. Another example of a mythological element in the film is Roy’s bat, wonder boy, as it represents King Arthurs’s Excalibur. Roy Hobbs’s character also loosely follows the story of The Odyssey. In that story, Odysseus goes on a quest, but is struck down by Calypso and it takes him twenty years to return home. In The Natural Roy goes on a quest to be the best there ever was. He meets a woman named Harriet and is shot by her, it takes him sixteen years to get back in the game. Another character in the film The Natural is Pop Fisher, and he can be related to the Fisher King. The Fisher King was a broken man who guarded the Holy Grail. The only one who could heal the Fisher King was Sir Perceval. In the film, Pop Fisher is the coach of the New York Knights who were a far below average baseball team...

Don Quixote

...Don Quuixote Don Quixote is a middle-aged gentleman from the region of La Mancha in central Spain. Obsessed with the chivalrous ideals touted in books he has read, he decides to take up his lance and sword to defend the helpless and destroy the wicked. After a first failed adventure, he sets out on a second one with a somewhat befuddled laborer named Sancho Panza, whom he has persuaded to accompany him as his faithful squire. In return for Sancho’s services, Don Quixote promises to make Sancho the wealthy governor of an isle. On his horse, Rocinante, a barn nag well past his prime, Don Quixote rides the roads of Spain in search of glory and grand adventure. He gives up food, shelter, and comfort, all in the name of a peasant woman, Dulcinea del Toboso, whom he envisions as a princess. On his second expedition, Don Quixote becomes more of a bandit than a savior, stealing from and hurting baffled and justifiably angry citizens while acting out against what he perceives as threats to his knighthood or to the world. Don Quixote abandons a boy, leaving him in the hands of an evil farmer simply because the farmer swears an oath that he will not harm the boy. He steals a barber’s basin that he believes to be the mythic Mambrino’s helmet, and he becomes convinced of the healing powers of the Balsam of Fierbras, an elixir that makes him so ill that, by comparison, he later feels healed. Sancho stands by Don Quixote, often bearing the brunt of the punishments that arise from Don Quixote’s...

Magna Carta

...Brooks Brown Mrs. Allen English IV 11 March 2015 The Holy Grail The Holy Grail is a very symbolic holy relic that is recognized as the cup Jesus Christ drank out of at the Last Supper. The Grail has many different legends, myths, and controversies to discover and is one of the most debated historical artifacts in history. The Holy Grail is thought to be a fine chalice or cup used as a drinking device. It has also been thought to be a stone, dish, cup, platter, cauldron, or horn of plenty (Day 122). The Holy Grail stands for a sacred relic that Jesus Christ drank out of; because of this many consider it the greatest item in all of Christianity. People seeking this great treasure; past and present have died looking for it. The actual object that is believed to be the Holy Grail is approximately seven inches in height. In addition to that it has 28 pearls around the cup, and is decorated with two balaxes and two emeralds. The texture of the cup is made out of stone and gold (“Holy Grail”). There are several myths in all cultures that involve when a person comes in contact with the precious item. Some myths state that if someone drinks from the cup they will inherit the ability to raise someone from the dead. Magical qualities of the cup are never proven but do have a lot of interesting things about them. One such example includes if someone is stranded somewhere and have no way of providing food for themselves, the Grail will serve as a nourishing chalice that never runs out...

...As we have grown up we have heard of Christmas. It is mentioned everywhere in newspapers, books, television, the internet, and everywhere else. But what is the real meaning of Christmas? Is it the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, the cards in the mail, turkey dinners with family and friends, snow in the yard, stockings hanging in the living room, and shouts of "Merry Christmas" to those who pass us in the streets? Is this really Christmas? For many people, Christmas is a time of sorrow. They don't have the extra money to buy presents for their children, family, and friends. Many are saddened at Christmastime when they think of their loved ones who will not be able to come home for various reasons. Turkey dinners may be only a wish and not a reality for some. Another factor is the advertising is it all around us especially during Christmas time. We have become so material that it’s all about gifts or boxing day. Most of us are looking forward so we can buy a new laptop or phone as soon as it comes on sale. These things make Christmas a marketing event not a holiday. A holiday, that is supposed to be spent with family and friends enjoying with each other. I can explain this with a simple story. The girl looked about 11; the boy, probably her brother, about 7 or 8. They were under-dressed for the weather with light...

This quote relates on the fact that he is taking the place of his king when he is not a Beowulf of knights, or known, nor a strong knight. Another reason on why Sir Gawain is more admirble is that he would not accept the ladies seducing or gifts. These next quotes state this " For two days, while the lord is/ hunting, the lady of the castle attempts to seduce Gawain,/ but Gawain nobly rejects her advances."(prolog). "She proffered him a rich ring wrought in red gold... But the courteous man declined it." (243-247). This relates because it says he was nobel, and by him not accepting the gifts makes him loyal. Admirble knights are both nobel and loyal. The final reason on why sir Gawain is more admirble is that even though he is not the best knight he still accepts the game, and goes to look for the Green Knight. Prelude of Lohengrin 2e Planche

...Prelude of Lohengrin 2e Planche Henri Fantin Latour was a French artist from the 19th century. He used music as a way to create most of his lithographs. This lithograph is a visual representation of a piece of music by Wagner. The artist uses certain elements of art and principles of composition in order to convey this very deep and wondrous event. The event in question is a beautiful scene in which a saint is surrounded by angels. Several of these angels are playing trumpets and you get the feeling as if they are appearing to him as time passes. The saint cannot believe what is happening before his eyes. He also notices that the main angel, which is the focal point, is holding the Holy Grail. This is any pious man’s dream. To be surrounded by the elect of God as if being blessed by the Almighty himself. This is a very strong way to characterize a piece of music, and it could only be done by putting together a clever set of elements of art. Of course a very important element of art being used here is line. In this work of art there is a strong use of organic line in order to create the forms of the bodies. The use of contour lines is also used to create the shadows and figures within the piece. We also notice the use of organic shapes. When using line the artist creates these organic shapes, such as the bodies of the angels and the saint. Also form is used in the work in the use of the main angel. It is used to describe the depth, width and length...

Both Tom and Gatsby, love Daisy in different ways and despite their differences, both men try to present a facade to the public. Consequently, these differences lead to unhappiness, jealousy, and grief. Tom Buchanan was polo and football athlete in his twenties. Bred in inherited money, he lives a life decadence and luxuries. Tom has a really domineering personality and is unable to restrain his indulgences for lavish goods and women. Tom's love for wealth is described by Jordan Baker when she tells Nick about Daisy's wedding, "... She married Tom Buchanan of Chicago with more pomp... then Louisville had ever seen. He came with a hundred people in four private cars and hired a whole floor of the Seelbach Hotel, and the day before the wedding he gave her a string of pearls worth three hundred and fifty thousand dollar." (Fitzgerald 82) Tom is described to be cold hearted, shallow and the type of person who doesnt care about anything but himself. Tom's reckless and violent nature is described when he, "Smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into [his] money." (Fitzgerald 187-188) Tom has no purpose in life other than to enjoy his wealth with self indulgence...
