Critical Thinking: In the mind of a Hospital Corpsman
Bullets from enemies’ gun fire buzzing around me. The distant yell for,“Doc!” echoing in my ears as I’m laying behind a bunch of rumble returning gun fire. That distant yell no Hospital Corpsman wants to hear. I get up and run as fast as my legs can carry me to the downed Marine who needs me, and needs my medical attention. I jump over pot holes where once laid IED’s (Improvised explosive devices) and parts and pieces of my comrades who had lost their lives. I continue to the yells and find the Marine trying to crawl to cover, I get to him pulling him behind a cement wall providing cover for him as I tend to his wounds. I struggle getting to my medical gear as I fumble through it, making sure all wounds are addressed as needed. I begin by tying off an improvised tourniquet, which will slow the bleeding, to his right leg and covered which once was a leg now a nub with a battle dressing. As I am muti-tasking marking the Marine with a “T” on his forehead with his own blood and making sure his pain is at a reasonable threshold by administrating Morphine. I yell, “Staff Sergeant start setting up an LZ (landing zone) for an air medevac (wounded personnel being evacuated from a battlefield seeking medical attention) for this Marine.” As the rest of the Marines continue to provide security for this wounded Marine and as I continue addressing his medical situation which now has gone from bad to worse as he now goes in and out of consciousness, I continue to talk to him trying my best to keep him awake. I continue to instruct Staff sergeant to call in a 9-line, which is certain criteria needed for pick up by helicopter and certain equipment needed to treat injuries. Staff sergeant ricks pops smoke to identify the LZ and I get the wounded Marine

Throughout this lesson, the term Battalion Aid Station (BAS) is used to describe various Aid Stations. A true BAS is a term used to describe an Infantry Battalion Aid Station. Know that there are many different Aid Stations, i.e. BAS, Group Aid Station (GAS), Regimental Aid Station (RAS), etc., each with different numbers of personnel assigned. 2. MISSION OF THE AID STATION The Aid Station has a dual mission, one that will be fulfilled while in a field/combat environment, and the other fulfilled while in garrison. The mission of the aid station is to be the primary HSS source for a unit. While in a field/combat environment, the mission of the Aid Station is to minimize the effect wounds, injuries, and diseases have on a unit’s effectiveness, readiness and morale. Treatments such as surgical airways, administration of IV fluids and antibiotics, as well as stabilization of wounds and fractures are common. The mission of the Aid Station while in garrison is to keep the Marines assigned ready for deployment. Christine Arnold Anderson Analysis

...Vietnam War was broadcast every single night during dinner, and her father couldn’t protect her any longer from the truth about war. However, that did not deter her from aspiring to serve the country that she loves. Whenever the military recruiters visited her school, she would go out of her way to find out what their requirements were, especially if they were Navy recruiters. In the 1980’s there were not a lot of women in the military, and Christine was aware of that, but that didn’t stop her from completing the necessary steps to be eligible for the military. After high school, Christine attended a university, and less than 48 hours after graduation, she went to the closest recruitment center for the Navy and enlisted to be a Hospital Corpsman. She knew she would enlist in the Navy ever since she was a little girl, not only because they have the best medical program in all of the branches, but also because she fancied the idea of protecting those who were willing to risk their lives for her country. She got a call from the Navy recruitment center, informing her that she had been accepted and that she would have to be on her way to Florida in a couple of days. She was so full of joy that when the phone call was over, she immediately and enthusiastically began to pack her bags. On her first day at training camp, she was made her companies’ Yeoman, which meant that she was in charge of supervising all the young ladies that were in company 3147. The group of ladies in company 3147...
