The poem, “First They Came…”, by Martin Niemöller, and the allegory, Terrible Things by Eve Bunting, both express resembling themes, stand up for what you think is right, without waiting for others to you, in relation to the events of the Holocaust. Despite this, the craft of each author is very different. Eve Bunting targets a younger audience and tries to encourage young children to stand up for what they think is right, without waiting for others to join them. The characterization in each piece contrast from one another because Eve Bunting uses fictional characters to resemble the same plot as the holocaust whereas Martin Niemöller uses a nonfictional plot with the same theme as Eve Bunting. In the story, Terrible Things, the characterization is established at the beginning of the story when it says, “The clearing in the woods was home to the small forest creatures. The birds and squirrels shared the trees. The Rabbits and porcupines shared the shade beneath the trees and the frogs and fish shared the cool brown waters of the forest pond.” This gives the reader a clear understanding of all the characters in the book, unlike the poem, “First They Came…” where the author Martin Niemöller establishes all the different groups of people throughout the entire poem. He simply states the people being taken away then moves on to the next group. The quote “First they came for the Socialists… Then they came for the Trade Unionists… Then they came for the Jews...” shows the reoccurring statements of the different people in the
