Horse Slaughter
The reputation of the United States, the Wild West, was built of the known wild horse population; and how the cowboy legends still will thrive with the running of the wild horses today. As many horse owners contemplate their horses to be pets or companion animals as a replacement for animals used for inhumane slaughter. I believe in the same notion that horses came to us as a tool for our success in life. Not for our avaricious selves get ahold of and ruin. Horse slaughter needs to be banned by both society and congress. According to Natalie Anderson, who scholarly wrote Protecting Equine Welfare and International Consumers of Horse Meat: A Proposal for the Renewal of Horse Slaughter in the United States, “Horses are not typically …show more content…
“They were essential to cowboys and settlers in westward expansion. They fought in every American war well into the 20th century,” (Knickerbocker). After twelve years’ of being around horses, I have grown fond of them. But it does not take years to be fond of equine. At my first sight of horse meat that was offered to me for consumption, I quickly said no as I knew that eating your friend was not acceptable. As Ronald Reagan said “There's nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.”(Knickerbocker) As well as the famous American race horse Sea Biscuit, who widely shown his traits of courage and strength after each race won. Traits that America still thrive on in the Wild West. As Knickerbrocker quoted from Wayne Pacelle, (president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States) "We Americans care for horses, we ride horses, and we even put them to work. But we don't eat horses in the United States.., and we shouldn't be gathering them up and slaughtering them for people to eat in far-off places." With many iconic and highly looked upon people acknowledging that slaughtering horses is morally wrong, and yet the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) considers this to be all right. Secondly, as numerous people have consumed horse meat, more health …show more content…
A substance unknown to mankind. A substance known to be one of the many animals of this country that shows pride and courage, next to the bald eagle. Slaughtering equine for human consumption is believed to raise moral and societal questions of whether they are classified as animals as companion or for consumption; health related risks of consuming horse meat; as well as the brutal truth of what really happens when horses are slaughtered. “The next step, say animal rights groups, is to ban the export of live horses to other countries where horse-meat is consumed or prepared for shipment to Europe and Japan.” (Knickerbrocker) Any plan to stop this ferocious practice is better than not having a plan at all. The slaughter of equine should be banned by society for thinking it’s all right to eat an animal once used in the past to present day to help fight our wars. And should be banned by Congress, who funds such a barbaric

...Saving Horses from Slaughter Finding a perfect horse is nearly impossible, they have flaws just like humans. This does not mean that they should be mistreated or even slaughtered. For the past year, I have been involved in saving horses from neglect and slaughter. As a result of this, the number of horses slaughtered each year has reduced, needy horses have been placed in wonderful homes, and a vast amount of people have become aware horse slaughter. The first effect that saving horses from slaughter has had to me is that the amount of horses slaughtered each year has reduced. Each year tens of thousands of horses are killed for their meat. It is considered a delicacy in countries including: China, Italy, Belgium, Mexico, and Japan. While there are many other countries that eat horse meat, these five countries are the top consumers. Horse slaughter is illegal in the United States of America, but it not illegal for the horses to be exported to other countries. Within the past few years, kill buyers have made it possible to save horses that are headed to slaughter. The more horses that I can buy and save is one less horse that is slaughtered. There are several groups all of the...

A Closer Look at Horse Slaughter

...Abstract This paper discusses the sensitive and controversial topic of horse slaughter for human consumption and zoo animals, although, currently banned in the United States due to key legislative acts in 2006-2007. The argument addressed will touch on the advantages, and disadvantages of lifting the horse slaughter ban in the U.S. The advantages include but are not limited to, horse welfare, economic revenue and profit, and restoration of the failing horse market. Disadvantages are, again, welfare depending on how you view the topic, as well as drug and medication regulation due to the fact that horses are not raised specifically for their meat products. Introduction Horses have been used for numerous activities, duties, and jobs over thousands of years. These uses in early years range from field work like plowing, to transportation, as well as aiding and assisting during war. As civilization became more advanced, horses were needed less and less for utility. Horsemanship slowly converted into more of an art form with the purpose of enhancing the horse’s strength and beauty (Mutsune, 2012). In the modern world of 2015, horses are purchased as equine athletes for many different horse events such as showing, racing, or rodeo to name a few in general. Most of the time, these animals are being used for recreational hobbies or pure enjoyment, as economic profit in the horse industry is rare. Most equine businesses struggle to operate due to the current economy. Horses can live...

Mysteries of the Trojans

...Week 4 Assignment 1: Mysteries of the Trojans Alicia Robinson HUM 110 – World Cultures I Strayer University Dr. Bull October 31, 2013 Mysteries of the Trojans In the following paper, I will attempt to explain the mysteries surrounding the lost city of Troy, the Trojan soldiers, the Trojan War and the famous story about the Trojan horse. This paper will show why I believe that sometimes myths may not be merely myths at all, but may actually have more validity to them than one may think. These so called myths should not be so easily dismissed and I will try to explain why I truly believe this. The mysteries concerning these stories are the basis of the Homeric tales, the Odysseus, and the Iliad, written by a man whom history calls Homer, but no one is even sure if this was his name or maybe even his profession. There are many theories surrounding this alone. Many claim that he was a blind man and may be a descendent of singer, story tellers. Before Homer, epic stories were memorized and then sung. These were in fact true accounts of history, not like songs that are sung today. The Homeric stories are some of the oldest written stories of all time, (dating back to around 800 B.C.E.). The Trojan War is believed, (by scholars), to have taken place between 1800 and 1300 B.C.E., but the first written accounts were not written until, some five centuries later, after the Greeks adopted the Phoenician writing system. Stories, until then, had been handed down...

Ethical Treatment of Animals

...this world; some look upon these roles with favoritism, some with disgust. Animals give live birth and are considered different from humans by some people because of their behavior. Some animals are consumed as food by humans and other animals or trapped for their furs. Many times people get animals as pets and neglect them. Some animals are pulled out of their habitat and are used as research yet; some humans think they don't deserve any rights because they are animals. A. Thesis Statement Throughout this paper I will examples of possibilities that can be used to change the life of an animal in the food industry, as a pet and as research, we need to help them have a better life even if we are going to use them as food and pets. Animal Cruelt Research Paper

...What Are the Effects of Animal Cruelty? Dalvi Herrera English 135 Professor Michael Gurin August.25, 2012 Do you know what animal cruelty is? This is a common question where people would probably answer with the same response. The thing is that do you really know what animal cruelty is? Animal cruelty is not only physical abuse that animals receive but also on many other factors. This type of animal cruelty mostly occurs on industrial farms. You’re also probably wondering what an industrial farm is. Well let’s just say that it’s a bad thing. A traditional farm is a farm where they raise livestock the original way. What I mean by the original way is that the animals have freedom. Animals have the ability to roam around in big spaces and live how they want with human maintenance. With this freedom, they can grow up to be healthy. An industrial farm is the opposite farm. The purpose of an industrial farm is to raise livestock and then ship them out to be slaughtered. Animals here have no freedom and no right. Animals are made to live under very harsh conditions. The living conditions are very poor. They are forced to live in a small environment with the same kind of animals. It’s so small and crowded that animals could barely move. With so many animals living in a small area, they all live in their own manure. There is maintenance in the farm but sometimes animals just live in such a long period of time in their own manure. This causes many effects but I will explain them...

...Instructor, Dr. McCue December 3, 2012 Strayer University PETA Define an interest group, with examples. The interest group that I will discuss in this paper is the one of the most well-known animal rights groups in the world; People for the ethical treatment of animals, commonly known as, PETA. Founded in March 1980 by Newkirk and fellow animal rights activist Alex Pacheco, the organization first caught the public's attention in the summer of 1981 during what became known as the Silver Spring monkeys case, a widely publicized dispute about experiments conducted on 17 macaque monkeys inside the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. The group first came to public attention in 1981 during the Silver Spring monkey’s case, a dispute about experiments conducted by researcher Edward Taub on 17 macaque monkeys inside the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. (Eldercare Home Health, 2012) The case led to the first police raid in the United States on an animal laboratory, triggered an amendment in 1985 to the United States Animal Welfare Act, and became the first animal-testing case to be appealed to the United States Supreme Court, which upheld a Louisiana State Court ruling that denied PETA's request for custody of the monkeys. Pacheco had taken a job in May 1981 inside a primate research laboratory at the Institute, intending to gain firsthand experience of working inside an animal laboratory. Taub had been cutting sensory ganglia that supplied...

Submitted to: Mr. Fernando Domagsang December 7, 2015 Introduction Animal science is the study of animals that live alongside humans. Around the world, humans rely on animals for food, fiber, labor and companionship. Animal scientist helps people understand the importance of these animals. One of the role of animal scientist and animal science is to study the proper way of taking care of the animals and meeting there nutritional needs. Meeting animal’s nutritional requirement is extremely important in maintaining acceptable performance of neonatal, growing, finishing and breeding animals. It is important for them to stay healthy. Keeping animals healthy can help stop diseases from infecting humans. At different times in your life, you may have slept in a cradle, a crib, a bunk bed or a cot. You may have lived in a townhouse, a cottage, a college dorm or an apartment. Where you live depended on where you were in your life. Just like people, animals live in different places depending on their stages of life. The design of animal facilities combined with appropriate animal housing and management are essential contributors to animal well-being, the quality of animal research and production, teaching or testing programs involving animals, and the health and safety of personnel. Factory Farming

...problem of factory farming, but it is still a long way from being fixed. Factory farms are used to produce everyday products like bacon, pork, steak, chicken nuggets, milk, cheese, etc. The cost of buying a burger at a local McDonalds is around one to three dollars. If companies were forced by legislation and government officials to practice proper farming techniques, the price of your beloved McDonald’s hamburger will be sure to rise. This could cause a brief stage of net losses for food manufacturing companies. I think it is mandatory to incur these extra expenses for the sake of humanity and animal rights. A small loss in profits is far less important than the pain and suffering these animals have to deal with on a daily basis. In this research paper I will discuss the ethical dilemmas and the conditions of the factory farms, as well as solutions to the problem of animals not having the proper rights. Main Points Animals come in all different shapes and sizes. Society debates how to classify some animals. Scientist view animals as operating equipment. Businessmen see them as commodities. Religious advocates classify them as God’s gift to us. And the majority of Americans see them as food. In America we cannot keep our minds off of cheap tasty food. With an exponential increasing obesity rate at 60 million, the US ranks in as the most obese nation in the world. Meat production has rapidly increased from 44 million tons in 1950, to 211 million in 1997. Also 90 percent of the poultry...

Alexander the Great

...ALEXANDER THE GREAT: HERO, HUMANITARIAN, OR MANIAC? INTRODUCTION Alexander the Great is by all historical accounts one of the most influential figures of history. He was the son of Philip II, the King of Macedon who conquered Greece in 338 B.C. but was assassinated soon thereafter. Alexander thus became king at the age of seventeen (in 336 B.C. ), and at the age of twenty he set off to conquer the known world. In a series of lightning campaigns he conquered the Persian Empire that had until then been invincible, and in a certain sense he avenged Greece for the earlier Persian Wars. He marched through Asia Minor, Syria, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Persia, conquering all before him. In monumental battles he defeated the Persians at Granicus (334 B.C.), Issus (333 B.c.), and Gaugamela (331 B.c.). He drove his soldiers on, crossing the mountains and deserts of central Asia, until he reached the borders of India (326 B.C.). There he finally turned back, retreating to Babylon, where he established his court. At Babylon he fell sick and suddenly died, at only thirty-two years of age (323 B.c.). Alexander hardly had time to organize his new empire, and this makes it all but impossible to know how he would have been as a ruler, instead of a conqueror. After his death, Alexander's empire fell apart and was ruled by his successors, Macedonian generals who became kings of independent areas. Most of these rulers continued Alexander's policies of toleration and cultural integration. Alexander's...

Cost Benefit Analysis

...ANIMAL PROCEDURES COMMITTEE REVIEW OF COST-BENEFIT ASSESSMENT IN THE USE OF ANIMALS IN RESEARCH JUNE 2003 REPORT OF THE COST-BENEFIT WORKING GROUP OF THE ANIMAL PROCEDURES COMMITTEE PREFACE Letter to the Minister from Michael Banner, Chair of the Animal Procedures Committee 17 June 2003 Dear Ms Flint ANIMAL PROCEDURES COMMITTEE: RECOMMENDATIONS ON COST-BENEFIT ASSESSMENT UNDER THE ANIMALS (SCIENTIFIC PROCEDURES) ACT 1986 On behalf of the Animal Procedures Committee I enclose the Committee’s report on cost-benefit assessment. In it we address the adequacy of the current cost-benefit assessment performed in the course of evaluating project licence applications. We have sought to look at the many issues which arise in relation to this important element of the regulation of the use of animals, but would draw attention to three particular aspects of our work. In the first place we have addressed the fundamental question as to scientific validity of the use of animals. We believe that our considerations and conclusions offer an important clarification of the debate and fulfil the request made by your predecessor, Mike O’Brien, to provide advice on this issue. Secondly, while we conclude that some uses of animals may yield scientific knowledge, we argue that this does not settle the question of justification. We go on to elucidate the full range of factors which must be considered for there to be a rigorous application of the cost-benefit assessment. Thirdly, we also consider how...
