Amerigo Vespucci was a Florentine navigator, cartographer, and pilot major of of Castile (Amerigo Vespucci, Gale). Vespucci was the person for whom America is named, and was once thought to have discovered the New World before Christopher Columbus (Amerigo Vespucci, Gale). During the time before Vespucci set out on his exploration journey towards the New World, Columbus had made his first two voyages to the West Indies, and he returned from the second to Seville, Spain on June 1496 (Amerigo Vespucci, Gale). He and Vespucci met and talked, but Vespucci appeared to have been skeptical of Columbus' claim that he had reached the outskirts of Asia. He wanted to see the new lands himself, because he was a curious person who was determined to explore. He journeyed to the New World and sailed around South America, specifically Brazil. …show more content…
After Christopher Columbus’ accidental discovery of the New World and Vespucci’s further explorations, Spain gained a monopoly in New World trade (Seville, Britannica Library). Because of Vespucci’s detailed maps, and the because they were one of the first known explorers of the New World, Spain had a sea route, knew what could be traded, and had bragging rights all before many other people took notice of the New World. The explorers of Spain, including Vespucci, made many detailed maps that positively influenced Spain’s economy and furthered their understanding of the world. Because of Vespucci, people began to realize that Columbus had landed on a land far away from Asia (European Exploration, ABC-CLIO). Vespucci did many great things that helped many people. His explorations and maps provided insight into the world, and helped the people of Spain learn more about the landmasses of earth. However, Vespucci did not only affect Spain, but America as well. Because of Vespucci, there is a good amount of influence from Italy in American history (Italian Americans,

...day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But July 4, 1776 wasn't the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence (they did that on July 2, 1776). It wasn’t the day we started the American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775). And it wasn't the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence (that was in June 1776). Or the date on which the Declaration was delivered to Great Britain (that didn't happen until November 1776). Or the date it was signed (that was August 2, 1776). So what did happen on July 4, 1776? The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They'd been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes. July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It’s also the date that was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people thought of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 was the date they remembered. In contrast, we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17th of each year, the anniversary of the date the Constitution...

The Study of Language

...language study – from how children learn language to why men and women speak differently, through all the key elements of language. This fourth edition has been revised and updated with twenty new sections, covering new accounts of language origins, the key properties of language, text messaging, kinship terms and more than twenty new word etymologies. To increase student engagement with the text, Yule has also included more than fifty new tasks, including thirty involving data analysis, enabling students to apply what they have learned. The online study guide offers students further resources when working on the tasks, while encouraging lively and proactive learning. This is the most fundamental and easy-to-use introduction to the study of language. George Yule has taught Linguistics at the Universities of Edinburgh, Hawai’i, Louisiana State and Minnesota. He is the author of a number of books, including Discourse Analysis (with Gillian Brown, 1983) and Pragmatics (1996). “A genuinely introductory linguistics text, well suited for undergraduates who have little prior experience thinking descriptively about language. Yule’s crisp and thought-provoking presentation of key issues works well for a wide range of students.” Elise Morse-Gagne, Tougaloo College “The Study of Language is one of the most accessible and entertaining introductions to linguistics available. Newly updated with a wealth of material for practice and discussion, it will continue to inspire new generations of students...
