Cabeza de Vaca was not a good leader, and only became leader because the old leader failed miserably. The moment they left for the expedition it was a disaster. The moment the Spaniards entered the Caribbean it was just a disaster, after losing two ships in a hurricane and over 200 men by drowning and desertion. Cabeza de Vaca was a very will powered man.
