Differences Between Chesapeake And Algonkian Society

...to understand how Algonkian society, the local Native American tribe, functioned. The English assumed that Algonkian society was structured in the same way as their own, a patrilineal society with a similar political structure. The Algonkian realized early on that the English played by unfamiliar rules, preparing them for surprises. Conversely, the English expected the native Americans the play by English rules, namely under English rule. Both parties lacked the necessary understanding of each other’s sociopolitical structure, and this led to a disastrous relationship. One key moment that embodies this idea is the English decision to capture Pocahontas. Inspired by Spanish success with kidnapping, The English wanted to disrupt Algonkian society by kidnapping someone in line to inherit the chiefdom, and assumed that this would mean any Powhaton’s offspring. However, the English were mistaken. They assumed that Algonkian...

A Letter to My Dearest Friend John Smith

...October 2012 A Letter to My Dearest Friend John Smith September 15, 1616 Dear John, Since I have met you I, Matoaka (Pocahontas), have matured into a great woman. Most people know me as "the most dear and well-beloved," but other people (Powhaton Tribe Members) still think of me as "the devil child or playful-one." In my opinion I am just a strong, resilient, self sacrificing, and overly caring lady of the Tidewater Region. Therefore embracing my new lifestyle as a Christian wife and mother is easy. When I was growing up in Werowocomoco which is about twelve miles outside Jamestown, Virginia I learned what I thought were necessary skills to being a good wife and mother but not how to be a colonial wife and mother. Being a colonial wife and mother means cooking, cleaning, sewing, making clothing, and assisting in raising baby Thomas to be a great man. In contrast to my tribes way of life where the good wife and mother constructs the house and everything associated with it, cooking and preparing food, gathering firewood, collecting water, rearing children, making clothing, planting, harvesting, making useful items (baskets, pots, wooden spoons), processing meats, tanning hides, and collecting plants. Apparently being a Powhaton mother and wife is harder than being a colonial one. I am really enjoying all the free time. In regards to my feelings I think I am finally in love with my husband John Rolfe. Even though I was forced to marry him for peace between my family and the...

Primary Sources Phillis Wheatly

...Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. In the poem she talks about her difficult childhood. When she was a child, she was taken away from her parents and then was brought into slavery. It also describes her love of freedom. She discovered this love by being a slave. England’s relationship with the colonies is compared to the relation between a slave and his/her slave holder. This is important to US History because Phillis Wheatly became the first English-speaking person of African descent to publish a book. Phillis’ owner was John Wheatly, he bought her in 1761. When the discovered her intelligence, they taught her how to read and write. With the help of the Wheatly’s, she was introduced to many important people. Although the Wheatlys are slave owners, they were very kind to offer her an education. “The Creek Indians, Blacks, and Slavery” The Creek Indians participated in slavery, but they had a different perception of it. They believed it did not matter what ethnicity you were. During the deerskin trades, they experience black slaves being owned by white people. Soon after their meeting, Creek Indians started buying slaves. The blacks introduced the Creek Indians to new ideas and skills. All of these events where happening during 1700-1817. The blacks help to produce the Civil War of 1813-1814. After the lost, the Red Sticks and some blacks created communities among the Seminoles in Florida. The Seminoles are a very well known Indian Tribe. They are known for being...

Conspiracies 9/11

...“Jamestown and triumphs” Julie Atkinson Reconstructive US History Professor Brumbaugh December 20,2014 Before the settlers landed in Jamestown, The Indians occupied the land and lived there for centuries. They were the first people to arrive in Jamestown. Some say there were 25,000 Indians; others say around 50,000 of the American natives, who lived on the land. There were about thirty different tribes whom the powhatan chiefdom took charge. However, each tribe had their own chief. In time there would be a change; King James 1 of England granted for another colony to be established under the Virginia Company of London which consisted of many wealthy Englishmen who wanted to invest their money into the company. They expected to open new lands for financial and patriotic explorations and use the resources of the new world. They wanted to establish English shipbuilding industries and to convert the Indians to Protestant Christianity. The Spanish were aggressive to convert the Indians to Roman Catholicism. Since there were already Spanish colonies in America, the English needed to develop new employment opportunities for the English. For this reason, English people wanted their own colonies. Around the time of 1607, there were three ships sailing from England: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery. They held around hundred and fifty English men, and boys who sailed four months before they reached Jamestown. During their voyage they encountered crowded conditions...

How Did The Railroad Contribute To Percy's Death At Jamestown

...“In 1608 and 1609, 500 new colonist arrived. In 1610 Jamestown's population was 60. Most survivors that spring were huddling near the water, living on little more than oysters.” (Conlin, 31) Sir Thomas Gates took over the governorship from Percy after arriving to the starving colony in 1610 aboard the Sea Venture, along with Gates, John Rolfe and his wife, Sara Hacker, arrived in Jamestown. No one knows how he Rolfe was able to purchase his black market goods, but Rolfe had somehow been able to smuggle tobacco seeds from the Spanish with him to Jamestown. “Rolfe experimented in is garden in 1612. In 1614 he had more tobacco than he needed for his pipe, and shipped four barrels to England. The reception was sensational. It sold quickly at a huge profit.”...

The Statutes

...Assignment 2: The Statutes Sara Barboza Dr. Joseph McCue PAD 525 Constitutional and Administrative Law October 18, 2015 INTRODUCTION The word miscegenation comes from the Latin words miscere (to mix) and genus (type, family, or descent) and has been used to refer to cohabitation or intermarriage between racial groups. Regulated by state law, miscegenation was illegal in many states for decades. However, interracial marriage in the United States has been fully legal in all U.S. states since the 1967 Supreme Court decision, Loving v. Virginia, that decreed all state antimiscegenation laws unconstitutional. Many states, of course, had chosen to legalize interracial marriage much earlier. According to a May 14, 2012, Huffington Post article entitled “Interracial Marriage Statistics: Pew Report Finds Mixed-Race Marriage Rates Rising,” the 1980 Census (the first to collect data on interracial marriage) reported that 3% of all married couples were from different races. The number had risen to 8.4% (one in twelve couples) by 2010. Looking at marriages recorded in the years between 2008 and 2010, we find that 22% of newly-married couples in Western states were of different races or ethnicities, compared to 14% in the South, 13% in the Northeast, and 11% in the Midwest. QUESTION 1: Analyze and evaluate each case independently by providing the following (about two paragraphs per case): LOVING V. VIRGINIA CASE. 1. Ielts
