Devastating events occur in this life changing novel, The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak. This novel tells the story of a little girl’s life in Germany. It covers all of the hardships she faced with her new family, her friends, and her community. Ultimately these hardships caused depression on the characters, which provoked the destruction of them. For example, when characters lose their family or when characters lose their friends.

When the characters lose their family members that provokes the destruction of them. The main character in this book is Liesel. When she was littler, her brother, Werner died at the train tracks. The deaths especially hurt him because he already doesn’t like his job. This is proved when he says, “It takes the edge off the stress. It helps me relax.” (Zusak, page 4). In this part of the novel Death is talking about his job and how colours help him cope with his horrible job. Colours and how they distract him are the only positive thing he can think of. After Rudy’s death, he is absolutely destroyed, but he goes on to collect the other bodies. Rudy’s death didn’t just affect Death. It also affected Liesel greatly. Throughout the novel Rudy and Liesel become best friends. The death of her best friend destroys her, She doesn’t know what to do. “Rudy, please, wake up. Goddamnit, wake up, I love you. Come on, Rudy, come on, Jesse Owens, don’t you know I love you, wake up, wake up, wake up…” (Zusak, page 535). Liesel is absolutely heartbroken. The author goes on to say, “In disbelief, Liesel buried her head into Rudy’s chest.” Liesel moves on with her life and grows up, but she forever misses her best friend.
