William Shakespeare uses character motive to show the feelings and actions. Character motive causes different characters to make actions, like Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence uses motives that have good intentions. These good intended motives caused problems in the approaching events. In William Shakespeare’s drama, The Tragedy Of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence uses character motive to help two lovers, but his motives cause problematic scenes.

Friar Laurence’s motive of marrying Romeo and Juliet was done in hope to bring their two families together. This is shown when the friar says, “In one respect I'll thy assistant be for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancour to pure love”, in act two, scene three. This excerpt is showing friar Laurence’s motive to marry Romeo and Juliet together. Friar Laurence’s action of giving Juliet the potion is shown in act four, scene one by “Hold, daughter. I do spy a kind of hope, which craves as desperate an execution.” This quotation is describing that Friar Laurence is making a plan with Juliet. The plan involves Juliet drinking a potion given to her by Friar Laurence, which will make her fall into a death like sleep for almost two days. The Friar will contact Romeo. When Rome receives the news, he will come to Juliet's rescue, and Juliet and Romeo will run away from Verona. This creates a problem because Romeo did not receive news of Friar Laurence’s plan. The Friar’s motive of getting himself out of trouble caused more trouble because his plan of Juliet and Romeo leaving Verona did not
