Many people believe that fear is a inhibitor and keeps people from doing things they normally would otherwise. It is arguable that fear motivates people more than it inhibits them because people can use it to motivate other people in their favor or use it to spread rumors and lies. Many historical events happened that way with fear as a factor to gain control and keep it. In World War II many historical leaders used fear of the unknown to control their citizens and make many policies seem necessary. It was used in Germany, Italy, and the United States with the blocking of immigrants and internment camps as well. It happens today with the refugee crisis and the fear of certain religions. Golding also uses this fear and power to show the faults …show more content…
He begins using the beast by attempting to control how people felt about it and whether or not they believed it existed. He would say that it did when he needed permission from Ralph to do something or when they were disputing something’s importance and the minute his plans or authority was questioned Jack would turn around and abandon the idea of the beast all together in an attempt to rally the boys to his side. An example is during the novel Jack says, “‘Forget the beast!” If Jack was astonished by their fervor he did not show it. “And another thing. We shan’t dream so much down here. This is near the end of the island’” (133). This quote comes from a time when Jack was being questioned about his motives on the island when just earlier Jack wanted to use his hunters to go out in the woods and kill the beast gaining him more support from the boys because that is their viewpoint at the time. Jack says, “But Jack was shouting against him. “Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong—we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat—!” (91). These two quotes show Jack’s manipulation and how he used the beast to his full advantage by changing how he felt about it …show more content…
This shows the depravity of the boys as they choose to believe almost anything about the beast no matter how absurd and how dangerous the thought might be. “Simon, walking in front of Ralph, felt a flicker of incredulity—a beast with claws that scratched, that sat on a mountain-top, that left no tracks and yet was not fast enough to catch Samneric” (103). Even the boys felt that they may not actually be a beast, but their fear of the beast outweighed their logic and their gut making them do stupid and inhumane things in the name of protection from the beast. Again, nothing could be proven about the beast making it hard for the boys to feel like they were safe and that the beast did not exist because most of their leaders in the camp generally believed there was a beast and many boys said they had seen it even though none of them actually had any evidence. “Jack cleared his throat, then reported casually. “He says the beast comes out of the sea.” The last laugh died away. Ralph turned involuntarily, a black, humped figure against the lagoon. The assembly looked with him, considered the vast stretches of water, the high sea beyond, unknown indigo of infinite possibility, heard silently the sough and whisper from the reef” (88). The boys could not prove that the beast came out of the sea, but they also could not disprove it meaning that they had to believe it or
