English essay: How does Browning and Shakespeare present jealousy in the poem 'the laboratory' and 'Othello'

Jealousy is described as someone who is showing envy usually of someone because of their achievements or advantages, jealousy plays a major role in both Othello and the laboratory. throughout the both of them jealousy is used for destructive purposes only. as an audience we are led to feel that both jealousies are motivated not by hatred but by the passion for one another, crazy as that may seem.
Shakespeare uses jealousy as a central theme throughout the play, without this aggressive and destructive emotion, there would be no solid plot. Shakespeare often refers to jealousy as a devouring emotion "Beware, my lord of jealousy! it is the green eyed monster which doth mock, the meat it feeds on" this fits extremely well with Iago's description of Othello being "beaten up with passion". This suggests exactly how strong Othello's monumental jealousy really is, once Othello becomes aware that his wife is unfaithful, Iago continues to feed his jealousy which causes Othello to indeed behave like a monster. however, its dramatic irony that Iago says this to Othello. the audience knows that Iago is perhaps the one "eaten up" with jealousy and Othello is none the wiser he holds; the form of personal and professional jealousy.
The jealousy that is portrayed in 'Othello' is very similar to the one portrayed in Browning's poem The Laboratory, it explores the theme of relationship but through jealousy, the speaker of the poem is full of anger and wants revenge, for her rejection, the poem echoes the saying "hell hath no fury like a women scorned" and reminds her of pain she suffered when she was requited, the jealousy shown throughout the poem shows us how she is releasing her own heartache in her own way.
As the poem goes through each stanza we see a growth of the jealousy building up inside the speaker, she goes on to say things such as "while they laugh, laugh at me, at me fled to the drear" we realized that this is what's really driving her anger, she feel like she's being made fun of, that her former lover and his girlfriend are laughing at her.Perhaps this is also steps over the line from jealousy to craziness, she starts to feel paranoid and becomes a little bit obsessed with her own imagination and what's going on there not what's actually happening in reality. Browning presents the jealousy very well through things such as dramatic irony, metaphors to allow the reader to visualize the situations clearer and alliteration, as does Shakespeare with 'Othello'.
There are many similarities when evaluating both the poem and the book/play. firstly both characters who seem to be bursting with jealousy are both driven mad past the recall of reason, Othello kills Desdemona in his fit of anger while the speaker in The Laboratory starts to "crush" her potion up to ensure her revenge is done properly. Both the characters in the poem and play are clearly disturbed and they both while having this jealousy grow inside them are only ever transfixed on that situation like nothing in the world could distract them or change this huge growing hatred they have.
When considering the structure of both poems, The Laboratory starts to use alliteration and rhyming to create a rhythm while she makes her poison, whereas Othello is more structured around what the speaker is saying. Both poems have quite unique tones but overall both share the same theme if death and obsession.
In conclusion i think both writers have focused on the deranged state of mind you often have when jealousy overcomes all other emotions, they have both presented and portrayed the main characters in different ways but both based around the effect of jealousy.
