How I Prepare to Take a Test

Preparing for a test has been by far one of my greatest challenges. I will admit that I have terrible study habits and after all of these years I’ve seen little to no improvement. When it comes to studying I’m that person that will wait until the last minute. The bad part is my test scores have sometimes shown the lack of studying I’ve done unfortunately. I’m almost positive that everything that I do to prepare for a test is completely wrong but I will share how I actually prepare for a test. Procrastination is the name of the game! I will literally put off studying until the very last minute. Why do I think of a million other things I could be doing instead of studying? It’s simple, I just don’t like to study. I will literally crash all day on the day before the test not realizing that I was putting extra stress on myself. During my younger days I wasn’t pressured about my study habits but now that I’m older I haven’t put much thought into improving until now. Maturity doesn’t always come with age, but fortunately for me I know what I must do to succeed. I usually do a lot of highlighting in the book or my notes which I think is good! The problem is I don’t go back over them like I should. I take great notes and I know for a fact that I do. Many times after a test I went back to review my notes and everything was right there. How can I take such great notes and still fail a test? I know that has to be the craziest thing ever and to make it worse I’ve had classmates utilize my notes better than I ever have. Whenever I don’t want to do something I have to force myself and I hate it. I should do certain things simply because I know it’s the right thing to do. The best thing about my situation is that I’m in a class that is fully preparing me for what I am up against. When I finally prepare for a test I have to get in my comfort

The Things That We Go

...for a big test? From personal experience I can tell you that it is not something you want to experience yourself. I have encountered this a few times throughout school. I can tell you a few things I was able to do to prepare, the reasons I did not get to prepare as much as I wanted, taking the test, and things that happened after I completed the test. Hopefully you will learn from my mistakes. Some of the things I was able to do to prepare was go over it in class, make a foldable, and look over my notes right before I took the test. Just by going over the material in class, I was not fully paying attention. When I made my foldable, I copied off of someone’s so I could finish mine. Right before the test I just glanced over my notes. Those three preparation techniques are not recommended. The reasons I did not get to prepare as well as I wanted were because I was out of school with the flu. Therefore one of my friends William let me barrow his foldable, so I just copied it. While taking the test, I soon found out how unprepared I really was. Another thing that I found out was study only the night before a test isn’t a good idea. The reason for that is that you will not remember everything you tried to cram in your brain the night before. Whenever I got my test I completely froze up and couldn’t remember a thing on it. I would say I learned the hard way. After taking that test, I knew right when I turned it in that I was going to fail it. I dreaded getting the test back. When...

...Brief Writing/Explaining English1000 Standardized Tests: Shouldn’t We Be Helping Our Students? By: Eric Boese It is true that technology and educational resources have dramatically improved over the years. In the article “Standardized Tests: Shouldn’t We Be Helping Our Students?” Eric Boese believed that standardized test use for students in the school systems are being used for the wrong reasons. Boese argues that the students are not being taught the knowledge and skills to help them merge properly out into society, but instead being drilled on how to pass the state’s test. The standardized tests scores represent the school as a whole and do not help identify the needs of the students individually. The pressure that is placed on the teachers to drill the students on material that is on the test and how to take it, eliminate time from what the students should be learning at their grade level, says Boese. He also believes a solution can be reached, but the source of the problem has to be located first such as finding a level of testing that will challenge the students, but not overwhelm them. In response to Eric Boese essay “Standardized Tests: Shouldn’t We Be Helping Our Students?” I was not aware of the stress the students go through about test that they take once or twice a year. I have to agree with him on the test not really helping the students individually because at the beginning of the year my daughter took the test and scored below average in reading and math....

Foreign Service Officer Examination Procedure

...For those planning to take the Foreign Service Officer exam (FSOE): “Define realpolitik and describe how this principle is evident in the strategies of Otto Von Bismarck and Camillo di Cavour.” This is one of the questions in the world history portion of the FSOE written test. I’ve heard people say that the FSOE is the most grueling government exam because the Department of Foreign Affairs is, they say, the most elite office in the government. Some even dare say that the exam is more difficult than the bar. I really wouldn’t know but one thing’s for sure: the mortality rate is definitely higher in the FSOE. Out of 628 examinees in 2011, only 9 passed. That's 1.4%. I heard there was even a year when no one passed.  I'm one of the lucky 9 who made it. And so to help future examinees prepare for the FSOE, I thought of writing down and sharing my experience. This is my own small way to thank and show appreciation for the people who supported me and helped me make it through.  The exam is difficult because it’s the type of exam which you can’t really study for. The scope covers everything under the sun, and, actually, none of the topics I studied for was asked. The exam proctor told my batch that the best time to review for the FSOE is in college, which is a little bit too late by now, right? So the best tip I can give is simply to make reading a habit. Try committing yourself to read for at least 30 minutes every day and you’ll have a pretty strong fighting chance. What to read...

...eliminated. Students think they have to work less, the work is less challenging than Pre AP, the class is an easy “A”, less is expected of them and they will be graded on a curve. These students are sleeping through their education. If we required more of them, we will get more. If the name sound more challenging, I believe they would work harder. Jacobs (2004) states that teachers and administrators must consider “… the empty chair …” which represents all students in a given school or district, and “… all work must focus on Johnny, and all comments and questions are welcomed as long as they are in his best interest” (p. 2). Second, if it is in the students’ best interest to change, modify, stop, start, or maintain curriculum practices, programs, and/or other related issues, there must be data-based proof to do so (Jacobs, 2002). All teachers should differentiate instructions to meet the needs of all students in every class, not just reserve that for those who are labeled as AP. Common Core Standards do not differentiate between Pre AP and General classes, the standards are the same for all students. The only difference is Pre AP students have to take a Pre AP test...

Education Paper

...Final Project Section 1: What is the purpose of education? What goals do you want your students to achieve? The purpose of education is to prepare someone to meet the demands of the real world. Education teaches an individual about a particular subject or it develops the problem solving skills that I feel everyone is born with. I feel that everyone is born with the ability to solve problems. Education challenges those skills and forces children and adults alike, to create or enhance their own problem solving skills. Albert Einstein was quoted as saying, “The aim [of education] must be the training of independently acting and thinking individuals who, however, see in the service to the community their highest life problem” (Einstein, 2012). I think this statement holds true today. I feel that education must prepare people to take on the world. Each individual will develop into their own identity and discover what is important in their life and what is worth fighting for. Ryan and Cooper (2013) “say that education is a process of human growth by which one gains greater understanding and control over oneself and one’s world” (p.28). Education is a process and we all take steps in education. That is why there are grade levels and there are curriculums based off of those steps that we take. Each individual develops a little differently than the next, but education presents someone with a problem and allows a person to develop an answer. There are parts of education...

Among the tensions that these films and novels explore are ones that arise in relation to poverty and wealth (class tensions); changing female and male gender roles; concepts of love and marriage; family dynamics; traditional and modern identities; work and education; and shifting political realities. Paper Towel Experiment

...Question The relevance of this test question is to determine which brand of leading paper towels is the best most absorbent. Consumers want to use the product that is most effective at meeting their needs. A more expensive product may actually be more cost effective if you can use less of it than a brand that costs less. Literature Review Many experiments have been conducted to test the strength and absorbency of paper towels. While the steps of the experiment vary from test to test, all of experiments are testing the same two factors; how much water can each paper towel brand absorb and how strong are each of the paper towels. Below I have reviewed the process and results from three experiments that are similar to the one I will be using. In the first experiment, the tester uses five brands of paper towels to test for absorbency, using paper towels of the same size to ensure the accuracy of the results. He draws a two inch circle in the center of a sheet of paper towel from each brand represented and placing the paper towel in an embroidery hoop to maintain stability. He then drops fifteen drops of water into the center of the circle draw on the paper towel, repeating the process for each brand, and measures the amount of time it takes the paper towel to wick the moisture outside of the circle. This test concludes that Bounty has the greatest absorbency. The next experiment tests for both absorbency and strength. As in the first test, several different brands...

The Week and Notes

...In week 13 we read chapter 8 that dealt with test taking skills. I read about how preparing for a test well can help greatly in test performance. First you need to know what type of test your taking like if it’s an essay based test or multiple choice. Making study guides and taking the time to review the information well before the test can make the test easier to take which would reduce your stress level. Chapter 8 also talked about how to work through test anxiety. Some ways to reduce anxiety is to have a positive attitude and to take your time while taking a test so you don’t get nervous and rush through your test. You need to take your time so you don’t make quick mistakes that could hurt you during the test greatly. I also read chapter 10 which dealt with wellness and stress management. Stress can hurt you when taking test because it can cause you to not be able to concentrate all the way and also it can distract you. Chapter 10 gave me some great ways to manage my stress. Some ways were to make sure I eat well so I have energy to do things, another was to get exercise so you feel good overall in a healthy way. One thing I need to work on after reading was to make sure I get enough sleep so my body and mind are ready to work the next days. After reading I felt I had learned a lot on how to prepare and reduce stress factors in life and while taking test. These chapters were very helpful and gave me some good techniques I can use every day to help me keep a good mental...
