Medias are changing the world – from the uprisings in the Middle East to the relationships with your friends – media are central to our lives, our businesses and our governments. We spend more time watching television and engaging in social media than on almost any other social activity. Medias change rapidly, with individuals and citizens producing more of their own content and interacting with others over global networks. Different situations require you to use different mediums if you want to convey your message most effectively.
A message to the technical support about an employee's computer that has been infected by a virus. This message, although important, is not usually critical. This message can be delivered by either email or over the phone.
A message from HR to all employees, explaining the changes to the company health plan in the coming year. This is a message that is best done on an all-hands meeting or conference call with an email follow up for reference. This is important information and should be addressed as such.
A message from the CEO of a large company to employees, explaining negative news regarding the company appearing on national news channels. Negative news usually requires face to face contact. He should go to the company’s location and address it as such. It will create more of an impact if done this way as well.
A message from a gym manager to clients about temporarily closing the pool in the gym. This can be done via email or posting on a social media source. That way they can utilize the resources they have and everyone will know.
A message from a professional association to members about the coming annual conference. This can be addressed via email or conference call. This is important, but not critical enough to require face to face contact.
