Thomas Jefferson was the United States 3rd president, he took oath of office on March 4, 1801. The potential of the United States was vast and Thomas Jefferson saw it this way, and wanted to expand and bring the U.S. to its full potential.Since the beginning of civilization there had been very little changes in industry and transportation. “Jefferson was a full century ahead of the curve with his marvelous Imagination” pg. 53. Ambrose said he was the greatest empire builder, in an age of imperialism. Mentioning Jefferson’s intelligence and imagination, he creates a greater view of his mind and goals. Ambrose included the way Jefferson viewed certain types of individuals. Jefferson had opposite views of indians and negroes, according to Ambrose. He believed the Indians could be turned into civilized citizens, equal to white men. Though, negroes, were less than human. According to Ambrose the only difference Jefferson saw in Indians and white men was religion. “ The savage behavior of the Indians was caused by the environment...never did he say the shortcomings of the negro, such as laziness or thievery, were caused by their condition as slaves.” pg.
