Inferno Levels Essay

...Isaac Hertzog Pd. 2 Ms. Tucci AP English 11/10/11 Throughout Dante’s Inferno, Dante and Virgil trek across nine circles of Hell. These circles are divided into three different levels depending on how serious the sins were. In each circle, Dante displays divine retribution for the punishments, based on the sin committed during the sinner’s life. The three levels of sin are the sins of incontinence, violence, and fraud. In each level, the punishment increase in pain, starting in the first level. The first type of sin is the sin of incontinence. Incontinence is the inability to have control over actions one’s own actions. This level includes the lustful, gluttonous, and the wrathful. The lustful were those who were self-indulgent, therefore denying the light of God. People such as Cleopatra, Achilles, and Helen of Troy are in this level. These souls are constantly blown around uncontrollably by heavy winds and strong rains. This was used as a literal interpretation of the sinner’s emotions. The person was caught in a “whirlwind” of lust and a tempest, or storm, of passion. The next group of sinners is the gluttonous who wasted their money on unnecessary things. Gluttony is considered one of the seven capital sins. They wasted God’s gifts and now they have to suffer for it. They lay, half buried in garbage while more falls on them. Each person “wasted” what they had and now are covered in waste materials. Another group of sinners in the incontinence level is the wrathful. Wrathful...

If the fraud event occurred because an employee(s) simply failed to follow the internal control policies, then there are corrective measures that business units may take to ensure policies are followed in the future. These include communication to employees regarding increased awareness, correct handling processes and policy adherence. Diamond Foods Inc: Fraudulent Walnut Prices

How much could the snack-food company pay for walnuts that year and still top Wall Street estimates? According to the complaint released by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the answer was 10 cents less than the expected 82 cents that the company was expected to pay. To cover the difference, Mr. Neil devised a plan to put the extra cost into the following year which all the company the report better-than-expected results. The alleged fraud gave the company a string of earning beats and a strong rise in its stock. Is it still helping in today’s culture? Yes, To Kill a Mockingbird is still culturally relevant to today's society. ...Diamond Foods 2014 San Francisco-based Diamond Foods Inc, and two former top executives deceived investors, by lying about walnut costs to boost earnings. Diamond Foods former former Chief Financial Officer, Steven Neil, directed a scheme to under report how much money the company paid walnut growers by delaying the recording of the payments into later fiscal periods. Which allowed the company to report higher net income and beat the expectations of analysts for fiscal quarters 2010 and 2011. The CFO devised special payments to satisfy Diamond’s walnut growers and bring amounts paid to growers closer to market prices, but wrongly omitted parts of those payments from the year-end financial statements. Instead of correctly recording the costs on Diamond’s books, Neil told his finance team to record the payments as advances on crops that had not yet been delivered. Even though the payments were for prior crop deliveries, Diamond was able to manipulate walnut costs in its accounting to hit quarterly targets for earnings per share (EPS) and exceed estimates by analysts. Credit Cards

...Luchsinger Professor Anderson English 112 20 January 2013 Paper or Plastic? In modern times, it’s easy to see how technology has created comfort and convenience in everyday life. For example, credit cards, in particular, give consumers the ability to purchase goods or services with little effort. Simply by making a phone call or opening a laptop, a product can be bought and even shipped to the front door just by entering those little raised numbers on the front of the card; just ask my friend Emily! She ordered an enormous new 70in. flat screen TV, without even needing to go into a store. The funny thing is she doesn’t watch or own a TV. Not only did the store allow somebody to fraudulently use her credit card but it also allowed the TV to be shipped to an unauthorized location. That’s the rub! Credit cards may seem great, and they are for certain things, however, there is an obvious security threat when owning one. The temptations for overspending and the high interest rates that credit card companies add create other issues that cause potential problems for consumers as well. First of all, fraud can be a cause for concern when debating whether or not to get a credit card. It is becoming easier for criminals to acquire card numbers without ever even meeting the person they stole it from, and as technology advances, they devise new and devious ways to beat the system. For example, criminals have created ways to steal card numbers with machines that Luchsinger 2 ...

White Collar Crime

...MCI until he took the wrong step on a mud slide of accounting scams that ultimately cost him not only his career but also his freedom, family, reputation and self-respect. According to Weinberg’s research, white-collar criminals are not just ordinary people; they are smart, well-educated and ambitious. They often start as wide-eye fresh graduates at large corporations of which profit-driven culture infiltrates all levels within. Some of them were even chosen as CFOs of the year: Andrew Fastow (Enron) and Scott D. Sullivan (Worldcom). So why do they turn out to be the thieves stealing from the economy $2.5 trillion per year? Weinberg argues that these people, like Pavlo, do not just wake up one day and decide to commit in a greed-inspired fraud. In fact, only 7% of perpetrators have prior conviction. They operate business under the performance pressure from investors, stockholders and Wall Street professionals. They execute mega mergers which present opportunities for companies to hide flaws and falsify earnings at multiple levels. Somehow along the line of conducting legal but unethical business, they find their ways to the dark side. Weinberg presents a triangle of Need/Incentives, Opportunity, and Rationalization as a combined force triggering ordinary people to commit extraordinary crimes. In his book, he suggests that by pushing ethics education at school and setting the...

Since statehood in 1812, Louisiana has been traditionally conservative and today remains to be marginally democratic. It has long been known for its toleration of corruption in government. In his manuscript, “Peapatch Politics: The Earl long Era in Louisiana Politics”, former Lieutenant Governor Bill Dodd describes corruption as "a way of life, inherited, and made quasi-respectable and legal by the French freebooters who founded, operated, and left us as the governmental blueprint that is still Louisiana's constitutional and civil law." Among the 50 United States, Louisiana ranks as number 15 with an overall grade of a C minus on the Corruption Risk Report Card. (Louisiana - Legislative Accountability, 2013) Serving as Louisiana’s fiftieth governor for four terms in 1972 to 1980 and 1984 to 1988, Edwin Washington Edwards, who is remembered by many as a colorful, powerful, and legendary figure in Louisiana politics, ended his sixteen years in office short of colorful and powerful. The former Governor of Louisiana, Edwards was subject to a near two dozen state and federal investigations beginning in 1960 when he held a Congress position. Edward’s fraud behaviors were consistent to those of bribery...

Idenity Theft

...Identity theft is the biggest crime in the world today. For over ten years, identity theft (in all forms) has been the number one consumer complaint. In 2012 identity, theft affected more than 16.6 million Americans alone. With the 16.6 million people affected, there was a financial loss of 21 billion dollars. That number only went up in 2013 to 24.7 billion dollars and so far, for 2014 we beat that number by over one billion dollars. Finklea, Kristin 2014) With this growing epidemic, we need to educate ourselves on what identity theft is, how it affects us and how to protect ourselves in this new cyber world. Types of Identity Theft It may surprise people to know that there are many different types of identity theft. The most common and often the first thing people think of when they hear identity theft is financial identity theft. This is when a person’s credit cards and/or bank accounts are accessed and used without the owner’s permission or knowledge. The thief can do this by withdrawing money from the victims back account or by maxing out their credit cards. Another way a criminal could commit financial identity theft is by opening new accounts in the victim’s name; such as credit card and even loans. This type of financial identity theft could take the victim years and thousands of dollars to correct. One of the first cases that received the attention of national headlines of financial identity theft was from 1992. In one notorious case of identity theft...
