One of the most difficult tasks a company faces when growing is to remain efficient while being fiscally responsible. When a company starts out, normally there are just a handful of people so maintaining personnel records and other human resource tasks are relatively easy. As a company increases its most important asset, people, the job becomes much more difficult. In our case, not only has the employee pool grown, but also the distance. This exponentially compounds the problem. Our company has grown from just a few people to over 1,200 employees that are spread out over the entire state. We have a customer base of over 300 companies. These types of numbers and the demographics of these numbers make it nearly impossible for us to continue doing HR business as usual. It is time to evolve just as our company evolved or we will suffer because of it. Thankfully, there are numerous options at our disposal. I believe our first issue that needs to be addressed is the hiring of new staff. With our growth rate, it is inevitable that we have the continuing need to bring in new people. After a brief analysis of how we do things, I have come to the conclusion that this area can be greatly enhanced leading to less paperwork and quickening the process. There are some instances where it takes six months to fill a position and other instances where we are offering jobs to people who never even applied. In our country’s current financial situation, more and more people are out of work and are looking for a job (Outsourcing, 2009). This is both good news and bad news for us. It is good because we can be very selective in who we hire. We do not have to take the first person that comes along but can literally have the pick of the litter. It is bad because the amount of people looking for work bogs down just about any hiring process. We can get top quality people

Benefit decreases for the entire employee population. There are several laws that influence benefits in the state of Maryland. From the website www.md.gov, fringe benefits include minimum wage, overtime, meals and breaks, vacation, holidays, sick leave, jury duty, severance, medical/hospitalization coverage, dental coverage and pension and retirement plans. The laws for the state of Maryland do not require that employers offer all of these benefits. Employers are able to select which benefits they will offer. The required benefits are minimum wage, overtime, and meals and break times. All other benefits are at the discretion of the employer. Companies are not always able to offer a variety of benefits and may decrease the benefits being offered in order for the company to remain profitable. Economic hardships affect the organizations operations and cause employers to layoff, cutback, or shutdown. Minimum wage for the state of Maryland is currently $7.25 and the Federal wage is also $7.25. Employers are obligated by law to pay at least the minimum wage. The state requires employers to pay overtime to employees that work 40 hours or more at a rate of 1 ½ times their normal salary. Salaried employees may be exempt. ...Assignment 4: HRM Culture Crystal Smith Dr. Craig Cleveland Human Resource Management (HRM) 530 May 27, 2012 Women in the Workplace in South Korea Most people would believe that discrimination among women in the marketplace is non-existent, but reality dictates that there are some countries that will hire women, but there is a ‘glass ceiling’ when it comes to promoting them to higher management jobs. In some countries like South Korea, women are hired and given jobs outside the home, but there will always be this stigma that men are better leaders and so that prevents them from obtaining the higher executive positions. A survey of over 3,000 members of the Institute of Management and Leadership revealed that 73% of the females felt that there were barriers to being promoted to management and executive positions in the UK area, whereas only 38% of males thought there was a glass ceiling (www.guardian.co.uk, 2011, pg. 1, para. 3). It is not customary practice for businesses in South Korea to hire and promote women no matter how qualified they are and so discrimination is still a culture norm in this country. This gender gap is a culture norm due to a traditional belief that men are better leaders than women an idea that is based from Confucianism ideology (Nobel, Carmen, 2010, pg. 4, para. 1). Even today the legacy of the Confucianism is apparent in their moral values, legal system, relationship between young and old, and also between husband and wife. Confucianism was...

As the world’s leading convenience store, 7 Eleven needs to provide accessible goods to customers and a strong level of customer service. The episode of Undercover Boss detailing the 7 Eleven franchises demonstrated that there are multiple positions necessitated to keep stores running efficiently. The first position detailed was a store clerk. The next position that was explored was the delivery truck driver. Although these positions differ, both are necessitated in order to maintain the world’s largest convenient store. The role of the store clerk and the role of the delivery truck driver will be compared to determine what similarities exist. A job description will then be created in order to recruit new employees. Finally, the position of store clerk will be explored to demonstrate how this position adheres to federal laws. Comparison of Positions The episode detailed two main positions. The first position was the store clerk. The clerk was required to stock shelves, make coffee, ring up customers and ensure that customers could find everything they were looking for (YouTube, n.d.). ...Strategic Human Resources Management- HRM 530 Dr. Natalie S. Marsh Assignment # 1-“Mountain Bank” Ben Surprin October 19, 2011 1. Discuss the strategies that Mountain Bank should implement to achieve a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Out of the four competitive business strategies, business-level strategies are the most important when it comes to day-to-day human resource activities. Business-level strategies focus on how and organization will compete with other organizations that provide similar goods or services (Brown & Stewart, p 47). In order to compete, competitive business strategies and human resource strategies must work together to reach a high effectiveness level. Mountain Bank should implement the Cost Leadership Strategy, which seeks to produce goods and services inexpensively, but still at a highly effective level (Brown & Stewart p. 48). There is a misconception that the cost strategy only means offering goods and services at the lowest price, however, cost really captures the expenses associated with creating the product. The difference between cost and price creates a profit. The key to the cost leadership strategy is in controlling expenses, not in simply setting lower prices than the competition. 2. Describe the types of practices a human resource professional should recommend for Mountain Bank with respect to its tellers, based on the universalistic approach and commitment strategy. “Effective human resource...
