There are always multiple sides to a person. Most of the time, they are hidden underneath the initial impression and are waiting to be revealed. In Huckleberry Finn, there is a character who possesses this multilayer quality. This coming-of-age novel tells the tale through the perspective of Huckleberry Finn, a young adolescent boy who travels along the Mississippi River with a slave named Jim in the pre-civil war era. Throughout the book, Jim plays various roles in Huck Finn’s life. Huck views Jim as a slave in the beginning, but realizes that he is also a father figure and a friend. To Huck and the rest of the world during this time period, Jim was a slave. Even though Huck tried seeing past Jim’s title as a slave, society constantly reminded Huck of Jim’s enslavement. In document B, Huck mentions that he “. . . was ever so glad to see Jim. I warn’t lonesome now.” Originally, Huck was happy because he found a friend on Jackson’s Island so he would not feel alone. As Huck continues to get to know Jim, they begin forming a strong, unbreakable friendship with each other. The two became so close that Huck was willing to sacrifice himself for Jim’s happiness. Huck says, “You’ll say it’s dirty low-down business; but what if it is? - I’m low down; and I’m agoing to steal him, and I want you to keep mum and not let on.” He no longer cares about being judged by society or Tom Sawyer because he knows it will benefit his friend, Jim. Huck even goes as far as religiously giving up himself to an afterlife of torturous suffering if it means staying loyal to Jim and helping him achieve his freedom. Over the course of the novel, Huck has greatly strengthened the bond between himself and Jim to the point where their friendship is so unbreakable, they have become a package
