Effects of Mass Media Worksheet

What were the major developments in the evolution of mass media during the 20th century? The First major development in the evolution of mass media was the radio they became available in the 1920’s. The next major development was the television after world war two about 17,000 televisions existed in the United States. In about seven years, two thirds of the American households had at least one. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, the media world faced another change with the spread of cable television. During the early decades of television, viewers had a limited number of channels to watch. Cable television allowed viewers to have many channels to choose from. The next media development was the use of a computer and the internet This would allow people to do many things from home. You could now shop from home. You can also be educated from home using software to help you. There are many social networks on the internet that you can now use to communicate with other people. Businesses from all over the world can advertise their products online and millions of people will see this. There is no limit what the internet can do for our world and the business world. I am excited to see what the next change will bring about and where media is headed. I look forward to what is going to come about because most times, change is good. Sometimes people have a hard time with dealing with change and for the change to catch on but our world is always changing and people adapt and make the best of the world around them.
How did each development influence American culture? The way that the radio influenced American culture it allowed many people to listen to the same thing at the same time. It also allowed people to advertise about things they wanted to sell, or promote, and it put many people in touch with each other. Broadcast television was the dominant

...Effects of Mass Media Tamarra Burnett HUM/176 2/3/2013 Erin DiCesare, Ph. D. Effects of Mass Media Introduction The 20th century has brought about major developments in the evolution of mass media. Developments such as the television, newspapers, radio, internet, and the cellular phone have all contributed to the evolution of mass media. This essay will discuss each development of mass media and how it has influenced American culture as we know it. Major Developments of Mass Media in the 20th Century The newspaper happens to be one of the pioneers of mass media. In its early stages the newspaper was handwritten during the 15th century. Newspapers has steadily increased since its earlier days, but a new form of mass media was on the horizon with the introduction of the radio. Radio was first introduced in the “early decades of the 20th century” (pg. 31). This allowed for millions of people to access anything from presidential elections to advertising. The next form of mass media to come was the television. Following the end of World War II the television revolutionized the way we communicated through mass media. With continual enhancements to the television like the VCR and cable television, this allowed individuals the freedom to record and view television whenever and however they wanted. It wasn’t until the creation of the personal computer sometime around...

...Briana Rainey HUM/176 Email to my friend Hello my friend, how are you? Thank you for asking how my assignment went. When researching the background information I had to stay on top of my responsibilities. My purpose in writing about the political campaign was to educate the public about the events and issues that may affect their lives. I struggled a little when it came down to ethical responsibilities. As a journalist, I have to strive to present an accurate, well balanced explanation throughout my research. For example, I am obligated to present all sides of an issue, and to conduct extensive research and talk to several sources knowledgeable about the subject. I also interviewed a few people, and when doing so, it is important to remain honest with the people who are being interviewed by telling them before speaking to them what the article is about and that I also have plans on quoting them in the piece. It was also different for me working with other people. I took instruction from my editor regarding which angle to approach when writing my story, how long my story should be and whom it is that should be getting interviewed. From taking this approach and communicating with others, I felt confident in the story that I wrote. When it came down to accessing the credibility of the political internet...

Final Assignment Hum/176

...Final Assignment HUM/176 Part 1- You are the chief editor of a large metropolitan daily newspaper. One of your reporters is caught fabricating sources and making up facts. How do you handle the situation, from disciplining the reporter to explaining it to your readers? As the editor there is a responsibility to both journalism and to the public to report accurate news stories. Through this public apology, I the editor assure you the readers that the fabrication of the material of reporter John Doe was not a reflection of the reputation of this newspaper to print misleading false stories and the direct result of the deception caused ABC Newspaper to terminate employment however the reporter wanted to comment on his role in reporting the news. I would like to apologize for misleading the readers of this fine newspaper and to give the main reason for my deception. News is as time sensitive medium. It requires up- to- date reporting. If a person reports a story several days after the event happens; no one will be interested nor be impacted by the story. The purpose of reporting the news is to bring awareness to the people who are impacted by it. The desperation in bringing the story first caused a loss in judgment and ethics. With the increased delivery methods, including newspapers, television, radio, online newspaper web pages, and blogging, It became apparent that to capture the audience I would have to use sensationalistic tactics to do so. These tactics in journalism are...

...SPECIAL ARTICLE Postfertilization Effects of Oral Contraceptives and Their Relationship to Informed Consent Walter L. Larimore, MD; Joseph B. Stanford, MD, MSPH T he primary mechanism of oral contraceptives is to inhibit ovulation, but this mechanism is not always operative. When breakthrough ovulation occurs, then secondary mechanisms operate to prevent clinically recognized pregnancy. These secondary mechanisms may occur either before or after fertilization. Postfertilization effects would be problematic for some patients, who may desire information about this possibility. This article evaluates the available evidence for the postfertilization effects of oral contraceptives and concludes that good evidence exists to support the hypothesis that the effectiveness of oral contraceptives depends to some degree on postfertilization effects. However, there are insufficient data to quantitate the relative contribution of postfertilization effects. Despite the lack of quantitative data, the principles of informed consent suggest that patients who may object to any postfertilization loss should be made aware of this information so that they can give fully informed consent for the use of oral contraceptives. Arch Fam Med. 2000;9:126-133 Oral contraceptives (OCs) are among the most extensively studied and used medications in the world,1 and are accessible without a prescription in some countries, although still virtually unavailable in others. In America, OCs have...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

Virtual Teams

...Virtual Teams: A Review of Current Literature and Directions for Future Research1 The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems Anne Powell Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Gabriele Piccoli Cornell University Blake Ives University of Houston Winter 2004 (Vol. 35, No. 1) Introduction Global competition, reengineered product life cycles, mass customization, and the increased need to respond quickly to customers’ needs are just some of the more pronounced trends currently driving organizational change (Grenier & Metes, 1995; Miles & Snow, 1986; Miles & Snow, 1992). One of the building blocks of these successful organizations is the Virtual Team. As a consequence, a growing number of organizations are implementing them or plan to implement them in the near future (Lipnack &Stamps, 1997; McDonough et al., 2001) and their use is expected to continue to grow (Carmel & Agarwal, 2001; McDonough et al., 2001). The increasing popularity of virtual teams has spurred a parallel growth in research examining various aspects of virtual team adoption and use. Recent research has studied virtual team inputs, socioemotional processes, task processes, and outcomes. Much of this literature focuses on comparisons of virtual teams and traditional teams. Virtual Teams Traditionally, both the terms “team” and “group” have been used to describe small collections of people at work. While the two terms are often used interchangeably...
