Hello, It is good to chat with you again! This last assignment was a pretty tough one on more than one count. Not only did I have to cover the current political campaign, but I also had to do incredible amounts of online research to make sure that I provided as much background as I could for my reader. And as you know, it can be very difficult to sift through all of the many sites that are out there that claim to be reporting valid political information so along with making sure that I provided quality information, I had to make sure that I was only researching quality information as well. Sites such as Politico and The Hill are clearly reputable and so I used them quite a bit during my reporting. Other sites, such as The Drudge Report and Daily Kos are both basically open blogs and do not provide information that I felt warranted including in my work. For example, it is clear just by looking at the home page of the Drudge Report, that it could never be used as a reputable source. Unfortunately, not all sites are as clearly laid out and it was very time consuming picking my sources. As a journalist, it is my responsibility to be sure that I provide a fair, honest, and balanced account of the campaign. The people of the United States rely on reporters for the majority of the information that they get on the campaign. They are not able to have the up-close sessions that we reporters have so often. Because we tend to be privy to much more information than the public, it is our job to make sure that we provide all of the information that we have as accurately and honestly as possible. We also have to be sure that we provide every side of the story so that our readers are able to make the most informed decision possible, since they very often base their vote off of what they read from our hand. I did struggle at times, with how socially responsible my report was. It can be hard to make sure that you provide all of the information that you can to the public so that they really know who they are/will be voting for – which is why the background research is so crucial. But I feel that there is also a line when it comes to the amount of and type of information that I provide about a candidate. How much is too much? After all, do they not deserve a certain amount of privacy as well? So, as I said, walking that line of providing information, while also respecting the candidates was very difficult to do. But I do think that I did a pretty good job of it. I really cannot express the importance of responsible journalism. The honesty and integrity of our reporting can have an incredible influence on the public opinion of reporters, the news, and politics. Too often, each of these is considered to be full of lies – it is often made into jokes how unreliable some news stations and politicians can be. Free speech and the ability to choose who represents the people are both positive and classic American values. Unfortunately, irresponsible reporting can make a mockery of these values and could, potentially change the way that Americans view their governmental system. So I take my responsibility very seriously and will always do my best to make sure that my readers can count on me to provide them with fair and complete information. Now that you know how much time and care went into my report, you will have to let me know what you think about it after you read it!
Hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,

American Media and Culture Week 7

...University of Phoenix Week 7 Assignment 2/2/2014 HUM/176 The information media does have social responsibility for the information that they put out there. They would like to believe that they do not but the fact of the matter is that people base their opinions and viewpoints off of the information they receive from sources such as these. If a news source writes a story about a politician being corrupt when there is no supporting evidence to support such allegations then they could potentially misinform thousands of readers into thinking that this information is correct when it is not. This could cause a lot of issues for the said politicians when all of this could have been avoided by a little fact checking before the story was ever released. Information media has become something that can either help its subject or destroy them. I put it this way because there are many sources that do use fact checked and accurate information, that are there to give the truth and not opinion based information. On the other hand there are twice as many sources that are just stating their opinions and views of a person without and actual evidence to back up these opinions and allegations. This causes a...

Final Assignment Hum/176

...Final Assignment HUM/176 Part 1- You are the chief editor of a large metropolitan daily newspaper. One of your reporters is caught fabricating sources and making up facts. How do you handle the situation, from disciplining the reporter to explaining it to your readers? As the editor there is a responsibility to both journalism and to the public to report accurate news stories. Through this public apology, I the editor assure you the readers that the fabrication of the material of reporter John Doe was not a reflection of the reputation of this newspaper to print misleading false stories and the direct result of the deception caused ABC Newspaper to terminate employment however the reporter wanted to comment on his role in reporting the news. I would like to apologize for misleading the readers of this fine newspaper and to give the main reason for my deception. News is as time sensitive medium. It requires up- to- date reporting. If a person reports a story several days after the event happens; no one will be interested nor be impacted by the story. The purpose of reporting the news is to bring awareness to the people who are impacted by it. The desperation in bringing the story first caused a loss in judgment and ethics. With the increased delivery methods, including newspapers, television, radio, online newspaper web pages, and blogging, It became apparent that to capture the audience I would have to use sensationalistic tactics to do so. These tactics in journalism are...

...SPECIAL ARTICLE Postfertilization Effects of Oral Contraceptives and Their Relationship to Informed Consent Walter L. Larimore, MD; Joseph B. Stanford, MD, MSPH T he primary mechanism of oral contraceptives is to inhibit ovulation, but this mechanism is not always operative. When breakthrough ovulation occurs, then secondary mechanisms operate to prevent clinically recognized pregnancy. These secondary mechanisms may occur either before or after fertilization. Postfertilization effects would be problematic for some patients, who may desire information about this possibility. This article evaluates the available evidence for the postfertilization effects of oral contraceptives and concludes that good evidence exists to support the hypothesis that the effectiveness of oral contraceptives depends to some degree on postfertilization effects. However, there are insufficient data to quantitate the relative contribution of postfertilization effects. Despite the lack of quantitative data, the principles of informed consent suggest that patients who may object to any postfertilization loss should be made aware of this information so that they can give fully informed consent for the use of oral contraceptives. Arch Fam Med. 2000;9:126-133 Oral contraceptives (OCs) are among the most extensively studied and used medications in the world,1 and are accessible without a prescription in some countries, although still virtually unavailable in others. In America, OCs have...

Contrast Analysis

...Introduction The focus of the present thesis is the passive voice, perceived from a semantico-syntactic point of view. My primary aim is to explore the use and functions of the passive voice in English, examining the reasons which motivate an author to prefer the passive form to the active one. Secondary interest is devoted to the function and the use of the passive voice in Czech. As research material I have chosen the short stories by the American writer O. Henry and their Czech translations by Stanislav Klíma. The reasons why I have chosen the genre of a short story are that it is noted for the unity of time, place and action. I believe that due to this fact, the results of my research will give higher evidence of the use of the passive voice since the basis for comparison is unified and compact contrary to, for example, a novel. For the same reason of evidence, I explore just the translations of one translator, since everyone has his/her personal style and different way of thinking and understanding of original text. I am interested in the issue of information packaging, especially in the different ways of expressing one and the same reality in the two languages: when both active and passive versions are formally permitted, what factors favour the choice of one over other? The passive voice is a phenomenon which is involved both in English and in Czech but in unlike extent. As far as I know, the passive voice is a favourite means of expression in English whereas in Czech...

Isolation of Rare Circulating Tumour Cells in Cancer Patients

...isolating CTCs are limited to complex analytic approaches that generate very low yield and purity9. Here we describe the development of a unique microfluidic platform (the ‘CTC-chip’) capable of efficient and selective separation of viable CTCs from peripheral whole blood samples, mediated by the interaction of target CTCs with antibody (EpCAM)-coated microposts under precisely controlled laminar flow conditions, and without requisite pre-labelling or processing of samples. The CTC-chip successfully identified CTCs in the peripheral blood of patients with metastatic lung, prostate, pancreatic, breast and colon cancer in 115 of 116 (99%) samples, with a range of 5–1,281 CTCs per ml and approximately 50% purity. In addition, CTCs were isolated in 7/7 patients with early-stage prostate cancer. Given the high sensitivity and...
