Human and Machine Intelligence Essay

Are machines able to think, feel, comprehend, and act intelligently similar to that of their human counterparts? The debate continues and with the advancement of technology anything is possible. This paper will take a look at artificial intelligence and clearly state goals and limitations related to it. This paper will also compare and contrast the relation between the functioning brains and will evaluate if computers are capable of thought and how the right and left hemispheres of the human brain correspond to that of a microchip. Finally, this paper will discuss our feelings on free will in intelligent beings. According to "The Free Dictionary" (2012), "Artificial intelligence is the ability of a computer or other machine to perform actions thought to require intelligence. Among these actions are logical deduction and inference, creativity, the ability to make decisions based on past experience or insufficient or conflicting information, and the ability to understand spoken language ” (Artificial Intelligence). Technology has advanced tremendously since the creation of artificial intelligence in the 1950’s. A major goal moving ahead for scientists is to create machines that have the capacity to think and act like humans. Scientists then hope that if they are able to create human-like machines they will eventually be able to surpass the thought process of their human counterpart (Goertzel, 2009). A second noble goal set by scientists is to advance their understanding of machines. Scientists want to take a closer look at how computers are able to grow, learn, feel, etc. (Goertzel, 2009). The idea behind this goal is to give scientists a better overall understanding of how machines embody their intelligence (Goertzel, 2009).

Though there is much progression in technology just over the horizon the advancement of machines still have limitations and hindrances. There are some extremists who believe that if machines have the ability to take on advanced thought processes like that of humans they may one day render the human race unemployed. Wide spread unemployment could lead to a harmful world of crime and poverty ("Buzzle", 2012). According to "Buzzle" (2012), "Human beings deprived of their work life may not find any means to channelize their energies and harness their expertise. Human beings will be left with empty time” (Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence). A second limitation to machines is that as of right now they are only artificial intelligence and do not possess a brain like humans do. Machines as of yet do not have the advanced ability to think outside of what they are programmed to think ("Buzzle", 2012). Many programs and machines though are seemingly advanced are in actuality very one dimensional. The human brain is the greatest absorption of complexity that is in the physical universe. It is a communication center such as a video camera and storage library. The more the brain is used then the better it retains knowledge. One ongoing area of research includes the functions of the left and right hemispheres. These halves are mirror images and are joined by millions of nerve fibers which are called corpus callosum. (DeYoung, ND) The left side of a body is mainly controlled by the right brain and right side of the body controlled by the left brain hemisphere. Each hemisphere has a duty to control language, problem solving, visual controls, and artistic ideas. Each is a backup for the other just in case one was to get injured. The brain continues to evolve in the right hemisphere where creativity generates while the left focuses on logical reasoning. (DeYoung, ND) The brain provides the definitive design which challenges evolution.

The brain is able to perform very remarkable tasks. Over the last couple of decades artificial intelligence has tried to mimic the human brain. Despite the incredible speed of a computer and their memory, computers still struggle to imitate the brain. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that strains to narrow the gap. There have been ups and downs in the technology. Unfortunately there is no way to mimic over 20 billion neurons, but there are now several things that can replicate it with less firepower. When breaking down the brain into simple terms it is just series of inputs and outputs just like a computer. AI has a series of binary form and mathematical algorithms that can now replicate intelligence. AI has made the way into everyday products which most people do not even realize. A recent example is the ability for cameras to be able to detect faces in a shot and focus on that face. A fairly recent remarkable feature is the iphone 4s with Siri technology. (Parr, 2011) This application allows a user with daily tasks, voice commands and intelligent responses. One might forget that he or she is just talking to a computer. Technologies such as these are evolving every year and one day might crack the duplication of the human brain.

Over the years machines have been programed to be used in factories, play games and many more. There has been dispute about whether a machine can actually have the capability of being conscious. Most wonder if a conscious machine could even have the qualities or characteristics of a human. Right now machines can do what they are told to do or programed to do. Programs such as the iphone Siri is just an intelligent search engine that was programed for listening to key words and outputting a response just like searching for something on Google. Unfortunately even though Siri is a fun feature to have, she is not able to replicate the billions of neurons which would take to have cognition for artificial intelligence. Despite the skeptics there are people out there right now trying to accomplish this great task. If a machine was capable of thoughts it would have to be super intelligent. In the realization of super intelligence, it isn’t an application or a tool that can just add capabilities of a human. A machine that has thoughts can also tie in with the ethical questions. Humans have free will and morals. They are able to tell from right and wrong. Would a machine have the capability to do the same thing? Iowa State University is one great example of accomplishing the idea of the machine having thoughts.

The University has created a machine that has the motor skills of a two year old. It is a learning machine that is starting off slow by picking up objects and recognizing the shape and sound when it drops. The machine is able to input the information and remember. This is a basic identification that a machine can have thought. It is still a long way from the 2004 movie such as I-robot which depicted high artificial intelligence with the capability of having a conscious.

The ability to make an unbiased choice at one’s own discretion without outside influences or under the duress of others would be today’s definition of free will.DO WE NEED A QUOTE ON THIS DEFINTION? Making a decision that is based on a person’s own feelings, not what they may have been raised to believe or have been taught is in fact free will. Intelligent and thinking beings that are taught as children that they are expected to behave in certain manner and present themselves in a certain light do not have free will. If a being is raised to have complete free will it would most likely be considered an outsider. All beings are raised with religious or cultural beliefs instilled in them by their families. As children, ethics and morals are implanted into everyday rituals in the form of manners, actions, and reactions. Due to being taught ethics and morals as children, children mature and grow into adults, and their sense of right and wrong develops. Before a being makes a decision, be it ethically or morally acceptable, they usually think before they act. This thinking time may or may not change their final decision or action but they do know before acting that their action will have some sort of consequence.
