Human Resource Management Practices and Employees’ Satisfaction Towards Private Banking Sector in Bangladesh

ABSTRACT: Dramatic advances of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), changing mix and personal values of the workforce, emergence of the knowledge economy and increasing global competition have created enormous challenges on organizations. To cope with the challenges efficiently, human resource has been considered as one of the most important factors in today’s hypercompetitive market place. The focus of this study is to gain an insight into the current HRM practices and its impact on employee’s satisfaction on the private banking sector in Bangladesh. For conducting this research, 100 bank employees are selected from the chosen banks and out of this 88 employees responses properly, the response rate is 88 percent. The questionnaire consists of different questions on nine HRM dimensions such as recruitment and selection systems, compensation package, job security, career growth, training and development, management style, job design and responsibilities, reward and motivation and working environment. The questionnaire was developed by using a five point Likert scale. In this study, some statistical measures such as Z-test, mean and proportion analysis is used to examine employee’s satisfaction. The study reveals that all HRM dimensions exercised in the private banking sector of Bangladesh does not satisfied to the employees equally. An Alternative Solution to Recent Unrest Background of the study Ready Made Garment (RMG) is one of the successful manufacturing sectors with greater contribution to the national economy of Bangladesh. The industry started its journey in late 1970s and enjoyed a rapid rise from 30 enterprises in 1980 increased to more than 5000 in 2014. Average growth rate of this sector was over 20% per over the last two decades. RMG is the main source of export for the last 25 years. This single sector alone earns about 80% of yearly foreign exchange of the country. Its contribution to GDP reaches 13% in fiscal year 2009-2010. This sector employs more than 3 billion people in Bangladesh of whom 90% are women from rural family. Thus this sector is playing a vital role in socioeconomic development of the country. But this sector is struggling with a number of problems. Conflict between owners and workers, labor unrest, shortage of gas and electricity, poor infrastructure, poor port facility, conspiracy of home and abroad are posing a great threat to its survival. ...Executive Summary The banking system plays a vital role in underpinning the economic development of a country. In the backdrop of Financial Sector Reform Policy streamlining the country’s economy, Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited (SJIBL) has achieved great success in all areas of operations with ultimate objective of improving the socio-economic development of the country. This study attempts to evaluate job satisfaction of bank officers of the SJIBL. It focuses on the relative importance of job satisfaction factors and their impacts on the overall job satisfaction of officers. It also investigates the impacts of bank type, work experience, age, and sex differences on the attitudes toward job Satisfaction. The result shows that salary, efficiency in work, fringe supervision, and co-worker relation are the most important factors contributing to job satisfaction. The bank officers of SJIBL have higher levels of job satisfaction and they enjoy better facilities and supportive work environment. Work experience is found as the second most important factor affecting job satisfaction. Sex and age differences have relatively lower level of impact on it.
