Human Service Professional's and the Problems They Help
A problem is defined as, something that is difficult to deal with: something that is a source of trouble, worry, etc. (Problem, n.d). Experiencing problems at some point in your life, is quite normal, and should be expected to some degree. Depending on the severity of said problems may result in the need to seek out the assistance of a human service professional. Professionals in this field are qualified problem evaluators that help individual’s asses their issues and implement a positive plan with self-sufficing being the primary goal. Various skills are used as crucial tools to assist human service professionals in determining a client's problems, which are described as; developmental, situational, hierarchical needs, societal change, and environmental influences.
The developmental perspective proves that individuals go through the same stages in life, but during these stages they may experience different levels of problems (Woodside, McClam, 2001). This perspective outlines the basic stages in life are influenced by developments we will experience. According to Erikson, there are eight distinct developmental stages, beginning at conception and ending when we pass on (Woodside, McClam, 2001). In this theory, each stage builds upon the successful completion of earlier stages. For example, trust is learned and reinforced in the infancy stage. If a baby is abandoned and mistreated during this time period, it is very likely they will experience distrust and a lack of connection towards others. Problems that can develop in this perspective are identity confusion in teens, inability to form healthy relationships as a young adult and the inability to be productive in your adult years.
