The movie reflects on the celebrated life of a soldier and is entitled, “war is a drug.” The soldier vividly displays war as a drug that needs to be taken by all soldiers at all times of their lives for their survival. The writer depicts this through the display of the paralyzing life of a soldier in war. She emphasizes this through the main character whose daring nature puts him at loggerheads with his colleagues (Eldridge and Sanborn). This paper critically analyzes the Hurt Locker with a specific focus on conflicts, symbols as well as irony presented in the movie. Various conflicts are displayed in the movie, first, when James is hired to replace the previous team leader, Sergeant Thompson. With his experience in war, he conflicts with the rest of the soldiers owing to his aggressive nature and failure to follow protocol. The soldiers find James’ ways reckless and disturbing but his spontaneity is seen to assist them soldier on to the end. Further James conflicts with Sanborn while trying to pursue the suspects of a petrol oil tanker that had exploded. Sanborn argues that the work should be left to the three platoons in the area. The advertising and previews of this movie did not prepare viewers for the action and mind binding events that took place. This movie had the viewer’s loving the victim that becomes the villain. The end of the first scene grabbed viewer’s attention. The action begins very unexpectedly and keeps viewers not wanting to miss a second. Because it begins with what the viewer see as a very possible real life situation. It keeps them feeling that this could happen to them, and if it did, we are left to wonder. Would we do what he did? In the beginning the movie viewers saw who the main character is, and who his family is. This tells viewers why his pain runs so deep. As the movie progresses we are not sure how he is doing but, we are rooting for him to get every bit of revenge. ...The Hurt Man It is the late summer of 1888, and the town of Port William is a dangerous place for a child to be wandering around. Yet that is exactly what five-year-old Mat Feltner does. Danger lurks behind every corner, horses in the road, the occasional droves of animals, and plenty of anger fuelled fistfights inside the saloons or in the street. Death is something Mat Feltner is aware of, something most boys his age nowadays, thankfully, are not. He knows his three siblings are buried in the town’s graveyard. The short story “The Hurt Man” by Wendell Berry revolves around the themes death and grief, and revolves around how Mat comes to not only be aware of the two things, but to comprehend them. The short story takes place in the town of Port William and the year is 1888, as previously mentioned. It is a small town, built along a road that used to be no more than a buffalo trace. In one end of the town is a school, in the other a graveyard. There are a couple of saloons, a church, a blacksmith, a bank, a hotel and some stores, and a dozen miles by river to the nearest courthouse. The characteristics such as the saloons, the fact that the city’s road used to be a buffalo trace, and the lack of law, as well as the names of the characters, point towards the town of Port William being an American frontier town.
