Market Research Methodology

Market Research Basics
Market research is the process of systematic gathering, recording and analyzing of data about customers, competitors and the market. Market research can help create a business plan, launch a new product or service, fine tune existing products and services, expand into new markets etc. It can be used to determine which portion of the population will purchase the product/service, based on variables like age, gender, location and income level. It can be found out what market characteristics your target market has. With market research companies can learn more about current and potential customers.
The purpose of market research is to help companies make better business decisions about the development and marketing of new products. Market research represents the voice of the consumer in a company.
A list of questions that can be answered through market research: * What is happening in the market? * What are the trends? * Who are the competitors? * How do consumers talk about the products in the market? * Which needs are important? * Are the needs being met by current products?
A simple example of what market research can do for a business is the following. This was considered radical because comfort and convenience were not traditional Corvette values. However, market research demonstrated that consumers supported the alternative concept. As a result the new Corvette was a huge success in the market.
With market research you can get some kind of confirmation that there is a

Hypothesis: Current conditions are favorable for PepsiCo to launch a alcoholic pre-mix beverage. Sub-Hypotheses: 1. Scalability: Growing demand in the alcoholic pre-mix beverage market supports a new entrant. 2. Defensibility: There is a first-mover advantage in this market. 3. Execution test: – PepsiCo’s existing manufacturing, bottling, and distribution infrastructure can be leveraged to minimize costs through economies of scale vis-à-vis its competitors. – Adding an alcoholic pre-mix to PepsiCo’s portfolio would not negatively impact brand equity. 4. Value Proposition: Customers perceive an added value and are willing to pay a price premium for a Pepsi-branded alcoholic pre-mix beverage. Necessary Assumptions to be Tested 1. There is sufficient space in the alcoholic pre-mix market for another entrant. 2. There is a significant first-mover advantage in being the first major soft drink brand to enter the alcoholic space 3. The infrastructure for production and distribution of soft drinks is not materially different than for alcoholic beverages (and there is significant...

...This paper investigates the strategic management of Pepsi Cola and Coca-Cola in an effort to make recommendations on how Pepsi Cola can build strategies in gaining a larger share of the market. The assessment of strategic management begins with the vision and mission of both organizations, which leads into literature review that identifies the consumer preferences of both Pepsi Cola and Coca-Cola. Following the literature review is the teams’ own personal assessment of consumer preferences for the Pepsi Cola and Coca-Cola brand (Please refer to Appendix A for the assessment). Finalizing the investigation are recommendations for Pepsi Cola to gain a larger share of the market. The Cola Wars Research Paper According to an industry report from Hoover’s (2014), the U.S. soft drink industry yields $34 billion annually and continues to grow internationally. The largest markets of consumption for soft drinks outside the U.S. are: Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay (Hoover’s, 2014). The constant change of consumer preferences is what drives Pepsi Cola and Coca-Cola to compete for a larger share of the market. The intense rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola have been going on since the late 1800’s (Economy Watch, 2011); when Pepsi Cola was born from a “combination of: carbonated water, kola nuts, vanilla, and rare oils” (Pepsi Legacy Book, p.7. 2005). This paper focuses on the diversified strategies of both Pepsi Cola and Coca-Cola in their efforts to gain the largest...
