Prose Essay
In the article, I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Sing by Francine Prose, she feels uncertain about the process of teaching through selected books. Prose gives a few examples from To Kill a Mockingbird to I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings as well as various textbook short stories. Prose is questions the effectiveness of using literary works to teach values through different traits that certain characters exude. She writes, “The narrator of Caged Bird is good, her rapist is bad; Scout and Atticus Finch are good, their bigoted neighbors are bad.” This is a twodimensional way of looking at the characters and their development. Another point found in this article is that teachers plant their own interpretation of a work in their students heads. Prose adds “ … this moving, funny novel (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) is being taught not as a work of art but as a piece of damning evidence against that bigot, Mark Twain.”
Which changes Prose’s initial excitement upon finding that work on the list. Overall, on this topic
Prose conveys that she does not believe that values can be taught through literature in a school setting. However, I believe that novels can teach a lesson.

Prose writes about how lessons are taught to high school readers as if they cannot draw

their own conclusions about what they read. Some may be unable to think for themselves, but it is from the point of view of an avid reader that I draw my conclusions. Teachers teach the novels the same everywhere, following given curriculum, but Prose continuously has the reader believe that it is her opinion that 1518 year olds cannot create a constructive and decisive opinion or thought for themselves.

I agree with the author when she states that a character is not completely good or completely bad, as it is usually portrayed in a classroom setting. In schools, teachers will try and make the character’s actions and traits simple to understand and create a simple good/bad scale that they will ‘rate’ these characters, when in fact, most characters have a threedimensional analysis. Teachers need not to tell students what they are to get out of a book or the characters by simplifying the characters or plot line.. Prose is correct by saying that a student should analyze characters and books with their own independent thoughts. Further, I believe that simple characters make the lessons easier to learn in a book, but are not always entirely accurate when it comes to character outlines and understanding the full meaning of the plot. While reading students think about how each character interacts with each other and what makes them act the way they do, but most teachers do not believe this. A high school class should not have paced reading that makes the student feel pressured and rushed because when a student is rushed, they will not be thinking about the meaning of the assignment, but, rather, will only be thinking of getting the assignment done.
When a student reads a book that is for school they have thoughts on the complex aspects characters while they read. The characters or events may be unrealistic but the lessons taught are real, the books taught are not too exaggerated to where they will not help a student learn real life lessons. These important lessons are learned by experience and a book can be one of the biggest experiences a student might get at the age they are. The experience is heightened by attachment to the characters in all their trait. It is inaccurate for Prose to say that lessons are not learned through text. Students in high school are striving for independence and the lessons taught through school reading environments help this need for independence thrive

Adam Kenney The Museum Analysis

...to absorb what is being read and even more difficult to understand. To me the argument is that hyper mediated literature does not allow for clear thinking in the same manner as printed literature. When reading printed literature, transitions are easier as the reader can keep up with what the writer has written with ease in understanding. As an example, when on the lobby page in Kenney’s “The Museum” there was writing on the page with a map to the left and a directory to the right. Clicking on the map revealed the different locations located on the Museum Map to include the North Wing (with bits of painted eggshell scattered on the floor like hard candy as a description), The East Wing (being a resemblance of white marble expanse with an antique suit of armor being propped in the room), The South Wing (having a soothing darkness of ceiling with glittering lights), The Lobby (having two well-dressed men being met by someone), The West Wing (with a complex statue of two figures), and the Atrium in the Middle (housing a beautiful garden)(Kenney, 2004). Clicking on the Museum Directory revealed other information that this reader did not find to be interesting. While I was able to gain this knowledge, I found myself being very disappointed as I did not follow a set pattern; I simply starting...

Literacy

... I was born in a non-English family. I started to learn English when I was in primary school in China. After that, I became gradually interested in this new language and, nowadays, my English level is continuing to improve. From my English learning experience, I have really learned many valuable things. First, it helps me realize not to give up halfway when facing difficulties. Also, it helps me know that I must take everything seriously. Thus, English actually has a significant effect on my life. Studying in the primary school was happy and easy for most of the pupils. For me, it was different. When I heard that I had to learn English in primary school, I was surprised and a little frightened. I was just a Chinese boy and I did not know the knowledge of reading and writing in Chinese very well. How could I learn a new foreign language? I still remember my first English class, and it was really a great challenge for me. In the class, the teacher taught us to say "Good morning" and "Good afternoon." At first, the teacher read the words slowly, and I knew how to pronounce them. Then the teacher asked us to read the sentences one by one, but I suddenly felt nervous and forgot how to read them. When it was my turn, I just read them ambiguously. After class, I felt ashamed, and I did not have confidence to learn English anymore. When I came home and told my mother what had happened, she encouraged me and told me that it was just a start. Everyone would make mistakes, and I would...

Write A Rhetorical Analysis Essay English 120

...Being brought up speaking English, I always thought I spoke and understood English just fine. Who would of thought that it was such a complex subject. From my last English class, passing without any issues, to this English class, which has been a huge struggle. I have found that I have been challenged during this semester, its been a love/hate relationship between me and English 120. This class has given me greater knowledge when it comes to understanding "why" the author is writing their article, its not just about summarizing what you read, its about fully grasping the complexity of the article. I know that because I have been challenged, and learned to overcome the challenge of writing rhetorical strategies, it is safe to say, that I am read to enter English 124. This paper will illustrate my understanding of English 120 and why I, Michelle Page, feel I am ready to move on to English 124. Let me start with the first paper we wrote in this class, it was an Argument Analysis Essay and I chose to write it on Carol...

Should Ebooks Take over?

...is hard to see people with paper books in their hands. But people with smart phones, PC’s and other technological innovations can be seen in every place. Is it true that nobody is reading paper books in the world anymore? Some people say that e-books are more ecological and useful because there is no need to waste paper. However, others have a different opinion, and think that nothing can replace traditional books. Some people argue that there is no need in paper books anymore, while others people argue that there is need in paper books, and that it is more beneficial than e-books. There are two main words that need to be defined: traditional books and e-books. Today, most of the people are familiar with the term book. On a daily basis humans are using books for information, studying, researching or just for reading during their leisure time. A book is defined by Oxford dictionary as “a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together on one edge and bound in covers”. It is a literary composition that is published or intended for publication as such a work (Oxford dictionary). Also, the term book can be referred to some literature works. In science a book can be called a magazine, journal or newspaper. However, as society grows everything is starting to improve, for example different technologies and even knowledge about certain things. People are able to educate themselves better because of new information. But it is not just knowledge that people have gained...

Effective Teaching

...networks. The challenge for working in the electronic age is that we have so much access to information but we still have the same brain we always had. The problem is not access to information. It is integrating that information and making sense out of it. Students must learn to use knowledge to achieve a goal. In order to learn the knowledge we need effective teachers. James Loewen in “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong” talks about his educational views thru experience. Loewen states that “textbooks are boring.” (Loewen 386) Did anybody like textbooks as a child? He talks how the textbooks are huge and weigh at an average of four and a half pounds. Children do not want to even think about reading a book so big. Another point that Loewen states is “That students and teachers fall back on one main idea: to memorize the teams for the test following each chapter, then forget them to clear the synapses for the next chapter. Students exit history textbooks without having developed the ability to think coherently about social life.” (388) Children need to understand that history in not just historical facts but rather, a set of lenses for interpreting multiple and complex causes and effects to explain past and present conditions. Learning from these texts, so essential to success, requires not only basic reading skills, but also higher-order reading...

To keep children interested you just have to do something that interest them for example if they prefer visuals then they enjoy videos, movies, charts, demonstrations and any thing else that they can visually see. Then some people prefer it if they have its said to them for example they would rather someone else read a book to them than them read a book to themselves. ...parties have read my novels or short stories or feature articles; when they ask, "Have I seen any of your stuff?" I shrug and the conversation moves on. If I want attention for an hour or so, however, I'll tell them my horrible secret — for several years I made much of my freelance income writing term papers. I always wanted to be writer, but was told from an early age that such a dream was futile. After all, nobody ever puts a classified ad in the paper that reads “Writers Wanted.” Then, in the Village Voice, I saw just such an ad. Writers wanted, to write short pieces on business, economics, and literature. It was from a term paper mill, and they ran the ad at the beginning of each semester. Writing model term papers is above-board and perfectly legal. Thanks to the First Amendment, it’s protected speech, right up there with neo-Nazi rallies, tobacco company press releases, and those "9/11 Was An Inside Job" bumper stickers. It's custom-made Cliff Notes. Virtually any subject, almost any length, all levels of education — indulgent parents even buy papers for children too young for credit cards of their own. You name it, I've done it. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the plurality of clients was business administration majors, but both elementary education majors and would-be social workers showed up aplenty. Even the assignments for what in my college days were the obvious gut courses crossed my desk. "Race in The Matrix" was a fashionable subject. The term paper biz is managed...

...CRISOSTOMO, Jestine A. Age of Paperless Paper / Online newsroom When I was young, my mother taught me how to write on paper. Tracing letters to words and drawing of dog or a flower. When I was growing up, my teacher always want us to write essays, poems or even lectures on paper - back to back. Yeah, I had a tough time writing on paper but I do know that because of that experience, I learn how to write, to read, to compose and to draw or sketch. Paper is a thin sheet of a material made from fibers derived from wood or grass. A thin sheet that helped me molds the person that I am now and a thin sheet that gave me the knowledge that I have now. Through the years, paper is used as a medium to convey printed or written information such as books, magazines, newspaper, and etc. Today, the digitalization in the print industry leads to an assumption that the Age of paperless paper is coming. Yes, paperless, based on the pessimistic people. No more printed outputs, no more newspapers and magazines or even books that are held and read by human. Of course, electronic books (ebooks) are available now. You can have a book on your gadget for free or pay just a little amount rather than buying a real book. Online newspaper and magazines too are converging to online world. They already have applications that let you read the same newspaper using just your gadget with the help of the internet. Cool right? Life becomes easier with the advent of technology. But it gives a hard time to the print...

...shows how I have progressed has a college reader and writer. Before this class I had trouble even understanding how to write a thesis and now I think I can definitely write a college level thesis. I have progressed to know how to incorporate my evidence into my concise and focused thesis statement. For example in the self assessment essay my thesis was, “Due to transferring to many schools over my first two years of college, I feel like I have had the opportunity to build up many habits of mind from Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing, especially in flexibility, openness and persistence but still can develop in metacognition and creativity in order to become a more successful college writer.” This showed that I could adapt a thesis to the assignment and it was focused and used my sources. At this point in the semester, a strength I have is the ability to connect source evidence with my thesis. I am able to develop my focused thesis around source-based evidence. For example in the college learning essay I was able to use my interview with my friend who was an elementary teacher to help develop my thesis about how teaching has changed due to technology. I also think another strength I have is organizing my paper in a proper order. In the three essays in this portfolio I organized the essays with a focused thesis, introduction, body paragraphs and an organized conclusion. A challenge I have is using signal phrases to introduce my source-based evidence. I have worked...
