Opinion Column Example

...Society Thinks Facebook Is A Waste Of Time And Invasion Of Privacy By Derin İpekgil 7:02 PM PST, November 17, 2013 Yesterday I was on my computer watching the new episode of the TV show arrow. I finished the episode and decided to go on to Facebook which I haven't logged on for a very long time. I checked my message box and realized that one of my American friends from the summer camp I went to, sent me a message. I was surprised and happy in the same time because he found a way to reach out to me, and that way was Facebook. So I disagree with people who says that Facebook is a waste of time and an invasion of privacy. First of all Facebook is one of the biggest social network sites on the internet and has more than 250 million active users according to Wikipedia. So if Facebook is a waste of time why would more than 250 million people spend their precious time for a thing like Facebook? The reason is it's not a waste of time. Facebook gives many opportunities for people all around the world to share their photos, videos, music and whatsoever things with their friends through an online database. Many of my relatives use Facebook and they all have the chance to see what their friends and family are doing. My grandmother leaves alone and she doesn't have a work right now. To get away from boredom she needs a activity to have fun. So she uses Facebook to spend her free time instead of doing nothing. The second thing about Facebook is the opportunity to find...

Propriety Software

...using Open Office (open) for free? I believe the pros of buying propriety versus downloading and using Open office is that for one that by purchasing the product you have all of the features available to and it lasts. When you download a free trial off of the internet it normally only last for a certain amount of time which is usually somewhere between 30 to 90 days. Also often times with the trial version it doesn’t allow you to do everything that you would normally be able to do if you had the paid version. A pro for using open office, of course is that it is free. So if you don’t have hundreds of dollars to go out and spend on software which most people don’t then downloading the free version will allow you to get the job done while being able to keep your money in your pocket. Social networks allow people to connect for a variety of reasons in a digital environment.  You might join LinkedIn to meet business contacts, MySpace to find a band member, or Facebook to see pictures of old friends and meet new ones. Whatever environment you decide to be a part of, posting information about you has become an issue of concern. What are those concerns? I mean what is the big deal about privacy? I guess the biggest concern most people have with privacy is worrying about who can see what they post on the internet. I myself have several social network sites and I have never had a problem with any of it. It’s pretty simple, if it’s something you don’t want the world to see, think will embarrass...

Social Networking Sites

...104 2 May 2013 Social Networking Sites The use of social networking sites have increased dramatically in the past years because of the new technology that is being introduced (Kris Gowen 245). There is a wide variety of age groups that join social networking sites but the majority are teenagers. Every parent has a rule on what age their children should be able to join a social networking site. I know a lot of parents that have allowed their 12 year old children get a Facebook but then there are some parents who do not allow it until they are 15 or 16 years old. It really depends on how responsible the child is. There are also other things parents need to take into consideration when they let their children join sites like Facebook or Twitter. The big one that a lot of parents first think about is the safety and security of their personal lives. There are so many dangerous people who pretend to be someone their not (Kim 13). This becomes a big problem for insecure teenage girls who need someone to make them feel special. It puts them in danger when someone they do not know is trying to pry into their personal lives. This will also make parents have second thoughts about letting their children get one of these sites unless they monitor them closely. My parents let me get a Facebook when I was 14 years old but they checked it every week to make sure I knew all my friends and I was not talking to anybody I was not supposed to be talking to. I think this is a good method for parents...

Bad Social Networking

...Enjoyable or stressful? Help or hindrance? Personally, I believe social networking sites such as facebook are bad. I have proof to support my concern. This is just a typical incidence which I am sure has happened to people everywhere. A girl in her teens, lets call her Amy, made a friend on Facebook. The person she started talking too seemed nice enough. Though the person gave no personal information she was more than happy to give away hers. They got really friendly. She trusted the unidentified person and revealed many secrets and problems of her own. On the other side of the conversation there was a paedophile. He was trying to get to meet up with her at a forest by a park in the local area. Once he got the address of Amy he went to her house. Not to say hello or anything on the contrary he was watching her every move. Amy fell for the unidentified person and they agreed to meet up. Amy told her parents she was going out, they thought nothing of it. Last time they saw her. She went to the meeting point and met him. She was became scared as facebook told her he was 15, her age, instead he was 28. Now what happened next is distressing for anyone. She was beaten up and killed. Though he was caught it was clearly no consolation to the family. How does this link to social networking. Back at the very start she met him on Facebook a social media site. No boundaries to stop either person, no observation from elders just two people completely different getting involved in this...

...Crips did not form until later. Many people question why young men and even kids join gangs, and there can be different answers to that question. However many people can agree that gangs and gang involvement is deviant act. The question now is what type of deviant organization are gangs, according to me, I believe that gangs are organized crime groups, or also a deviant family outlook. I believe that gangs are organized crime groups because gangs make up 48% of violent crimes (www.fbi.gov). Gangs take part in many different violent acts such as murder, theft, rape, kidnaping and etc… That is because gangs compete with other rival gangs, and when asked why they fight most gang members did not have a reason why. (Made in America Video). However they said if they kill one of us, than we go and kill three of them, it is that type of attitude that has led to 48% of violent crimes. (Made in America Video). Gangs to me are also organized crime groups because they participate in drug manufacturing, trade, and distribution which has to be carefully operated, without it being organized there would not be a profit made. Participating in all these different activities within the gang is what leads me to believe that they are an organized crime group. Another question that many people ask is, why do young men and kids join gangs? After reading “Why American Boys Join Gangs” the majority of kids that join gangs are low income minorities. According to Stanley Taylor, “―Ultimately, children...

The Ballot or the Bullet

...without even uttering another word. Malcolm X knew this well and that’s what made him such a charismatic figure in the civil rights movement of the sixties. Malcolm X delivered this speech at the height of the civil rights movement, just one month prior Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered. X was trying to go after a different group of people within the same group (African-Americans), he knew that many people didn’t embrace the peaceful nature of Dr. King’s rallies and knew he could capitalize on the moment. Congress had done very little to further the civil rights movement with any piece of legislation, and the African-American population was growing frustrated. That frustration fueled Malcolm X to deliver “The Ballot or the Bullet”, invoking a sense of emergency amongst African-Americans to act now. 1964 was an election year and Malcolm X used this to further fuel his movement, “when all the political crooks will be right in the community, with all their false promises which they don’t intend to keep (X, 1964). Malcolm X made it very clear that he was not asking the black man to throw caution to the wind with statements such as “I’m not anti-Democrat, I’m not anti-Republican, and I’m not anti-anything. I’m just questioning their (white politicians) sincerity and some of the strategy that they’ve been using on our people by promising them promises that they don’t intend to keep (X, 1964)”. So while he wasn’t “anti-anything”, establishing a logos...

Social Media

...made it possible for people to network with people from different parts of the world. It is a huge source of information and a platform where people can present themselves to the world. Although there are some positive stigmas on our use of social media, it has numerous disadvantages like creation of fake identities, cyber bullying and social loafing. As technology is progressing, it is enhancing the way people present themselves in front of the world. The main concept of a self-image is a person trying to show the viewer something about themselves. Social media has tremendously affected the self-image of people. Social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram and Tumbler are full of photos. The need for attention is increased throughout the years. People try to mask their identity and highlight only some specific personality traits which they want others to know about. People believe in everything they see on these profiles and most of the times do not even re-check the information or credibility of the person who is posting the information, which results in not knowing the true identity of people they are connecting with. Excerpt of the reading, “The Social Psychology of the Selfie”, “The looking-glass self” is a psychological concept that suggests we develop our sense of self based on the perceptions of those we interact with said Andrea...

Social Web Essay

...options and choices we have available, we can do just about any day-to-day function if we have a computer with a web browser. What is Social Web? The Social web is a specified term for the World Wide Web as a kind of Social Media. The term is currently used to describe how people socialize or interact with each other throughout the web. The Social Web mostly refers to Social networking, MySpace for example, and content-sharing sites (which also offer a Social networking functionality) within Web 2.0. These Social websites are mostly formed around the connections of people of the same interest, but there are several theories that specify exactly how this formation works. There are for example said to be “people focus” websites such as Bebo, Facebook, and MySpace, that focus of social interaction often by making the user create an online identity and a profile. There is also socializing on the web that is typified by “hobby focus”. For example, if one is interested in photography and wants to share this with like-minded people, then there are photography websites such as Flikr, Kodak Gallery, and Photobucket. I just love the fact that there are so many social networking sites to choose from all over the web. Personally, I am on Facebook, MySpace, MocoSpace, and several other sites that I do not engage in very often. I am really big on music, so I really like music sharing sites such as YouTube, Fun For Mobile, and Myxer. I can access all-most websites on...
